How's That verschijnt tijdens het cricketseizoen wekelijks

Terwijl aan de andere kant van het Kanaal de Bastille bestormd werd, richtten een aantal heren te Uxbridge 225 jaar geleden een cricket club op. Op moment van schrijven vieren de leden van Uxbrdige CC dit heuglijke feit met een T20 jubileumwedstrijd tegen een Nederlands XI. Een lang en warm weekend vol cricket komt hiermee voor wat eerste elftal spelers ten einde.
Een weekend dat vrijdag van start ging met een spannender dan verwachte T20 ontmoeting tussen VRA I en VVV I. In deze ‘uitwedstrijd’ leverde het goede ‘tidy’ bowlen de uiteindelijke punten op. Scoren tegen deze VVV attack was echter niet makkelijk. Op zaterdag liet ik me aan de boundary van het tweede veld dan ook uitleggen dat VVV over een hele sterke bowling attack beschikt. En op 28/4 na 10 overs leek hier ook geen woord van gelogen te zijn. Gelukkig wisten Babar Lasi en George Dunlop de innings te herstellen en eindigde VRA 2 op een verdienstelijke 212 runs na 48.1 overs.
Snel naar het eerste veld waar VRA I landskampioen Quick Haag partij probeerde te geven. Nadat de wickets van Ben en Vinoo snel vielen lukte het nooit echt een partnership te krijgen. Wickets bleven vallen en afgezien van een opmerkelijke 30 runs van Darrin Murray en eenzelfde aantal van Emile van de Burg stokte de teller bij 154. Een zeer lastig te verdedigen totaal. Na een uitstekende start van Sohail en Matthijs gooide Erasmus en Wesley Barresi de wedstrijd op slot. Na 29.4 overs werd de winnende run geslagen. Met één wedstrijd minder gespeeld vinden we VRA momenteel terug in het rechterrijtje. Met de terugkeer naar de zondag vanaf aankomend weekend komt de winning mood hopelijk ook weer terug.
Ondertussen waren de dames gematigd tevreden teruggekeerd van het derde veld alwaar zij hun T20 ontmoeting met Quick Haag wel in het voordeel van VRA hadden beslist. In de brandende zon zag ik vervolgens dat de wedstrijd op het tweede veld langzaam uit de handen van VRA 2 glipte al droegen ze daar zelf ook wel een steen aan bij met een onnodig hoog aantal extra’s. Laten we ervan uitgaan dat de zondag ook ons tweede beter gezind is. De heren studenten (ZaMi 3) hadden een weekendje vrij om zich optimaal te kunnen prepareren voor het Nationale Studenten Cricket Kampioenschap van aankomende vrijdag op de velden van Kampong. ZaMi 1 won in navolging van ZaMi 2 eveneens van Rood en Wit terwijl laatstgenoemden een zeer vermakelijke verliespartij speelden aan de Donkere Laan.
Mede door een gezellige Club Night met Pub Quiz was het op zondag angstvallig stil op VRA. Het blijft raar om in de zomer op zondag zo weinig cricket aan te treffen in het Bos. De U14 speelde ’s ochtends terwijl VRA 3 en VRA 4 het in competitieverband tegen elkaar opnamen in de middag. VRA 3 won deze spannende pot. In Deventer kon er door de Oranje eerste elftalspelers geen resultaat worden geboekt door het noodweer waarmee ik weer terug aanbeland ben in West London waar de Nederlanders 173 runs in 20 overs bijeen hebben geslagen. Een pittige chase voor de gastheren.
Zoals gezegd is het vanaf komend weekend business as usual op VRA. Het eerste speelt gewoon weer op zondag en verwacht u in grote getale aan de boundary.

Amstelveens Nieuwsblad: VRA KANSLOOS ONDERUIT Door Ruud Ackermann
AMSTELVEEN. Na een kansloze nederlaag tegen landskampioen Quick uit Den Haag is VRA keihard in het rechter rijtje geland. Na een gelijkspel verleden week heeft ACC haar eerste zege te pakken. Uit tegen HCC werd het een fikse zege.
Was VRA verleden jaar nog in staat om in een “best off three” serie QuickHaag prima partij te geven, dit jaar komen onze stadgenoten duidelijk te kort. In ruim 43 overs zat VRA weer aan de kant met 154 runs in de boeken. Alleen Emile van den Burg en “good old” Darren Murray (ex captain en al jaren niet meer actief) met beiden 30 runs konden de sterke Quick bowlers weerstaan. Zeven van de tien wickets vielen door vangballen, een wekelijks terugkerend fenomeen. De oud-VRA speler Barresi maakte als wicketkeeper van Quick vier slachtoffers en later aan slag ook nog eens 77 runs. Zodoende was het voor QuickHaag een koud kunstje het Amstelveense totaal te passeren, 155 voor 4. Het was weer Emile van den Burg die het meeste weerstand bood, 2 wickets voor 8 runs. Over de overige VRA’ers hing deze dag een grauwsluier waar men snel vanaf moet zien te komen omdat anders het degradatiespook het Amsterdamse Bos wel weet te vinden.
ACC deed het in Den Haag tegen HCC veel beter. Het Zuid Afrikaanse duo Heini Kuhn (99) en Graeme van Buuren (64) zwaaiden weer krachtig met het bat, gevolgd door 68 fraaie runs van Usman Malik. Zo doende kwam ACC weer met de prima score van 264 uit de bus. HCC bakte er daarna aan slag helemaal niets van. Na 38 van de beschikbare 50 overs waren alle Hagenaar weer naar de kant verwezen, 148 all out. Dit keer was het Paul van Meekeren, die zijn selectie voor Oranje helemaal waar maakte, 6 wickets voor 34 runs.
De TWENTY/20 competitie is ook weer van start gegaan. ACC en VRA spelen daarin in één poule met Kampong (Utrecht) en VVV (Amsterdam). ACC had vrijdag weinig moeite met Kampong. Voor het verlies van 2 wickets werd het Kampong totaal van 90 runs gepasseerd. VRA kwam in de beschikbare 20 overs tot 119 runs en hield VVV daarna op 116.

VRA Reünistendag 2014
Beste leden, donateurs en oud-leden,
2 Jaar geleden vierden wij met een unieke cricketwedstrijd op het Museumplein dat RUN, de oudste tak van onze vereniging, 130 jaar eerder werd opgericht. Onze club bestaat nu dus 132 jaar!
Toch willen we dit seizoen niet voorbijgaan aan het gedenkwaardige jaar 1914. Het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, maar in het neutraal gebleven Nederland ook het jaar van de historische fusie tussen de cricket clubs Volharding, RAP en Amstels, waaraan VRA zijn naam ontleent. Dat is dus op de kop af 100 jaar geleden.

My 23 Year Love Affair with VRA

Benno was right (see How’s That! 13th May).
It all started one damp November day in 1991 in my classroom at Cranleigh Prep. School when he and Huib Schotte arrived looking for fixtures with an English school, coincidentally only a matter of weeks since I had written to many Dutch clubs with the same idea having tired of Dorset and Norfolk and wishing to expand horizons. There was a bit of dragging of heels from a few colleagues but the man who mattered most, Headmaster Allan Wyatt, gave me the green light so plans were made for the Prep. School to go to Holland the following July with VRA coming here a week later.
Now the memories kick in. The first tour was me (Mike Howard) with Mike Copleston and Howard Summers, yes that’s right, Mike Howard, Mike and Howard, sure to plunge our new Dutch friends into apoplexy. We stayed like students on Huib’s floor to the east of the Amstel (Nieuwe Keizersgracht) but spent much time in the Odeon Bar on the Singel after the boys had disappeared to their host families.
The next tour was in 1994 when I stayed with Ellen van Baalen Blanken just south of VRA. The boys on that tour discovered a big brother in the form of Ellen’s son Marnix Hazeweijer and an object of lust and love in the form of his sister Caroline. Horsham appeared in 1996 on their way to becoming National Under 15 title – many of the same squad went on to win the Cockspur Cup 10 years later.
Tom Matena and Jeroen van Meerten had by now begun to figure large in my life having spent much time on tour over here in Surrey but also, in Tom’s case, kindly hosting me in “Hotel Krammerstraat” where I was always made to feel most welcome. Jeroen became my son Will’s big brother, usually offering advice on girls and thankfully not on cricket.
Tours in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2004 followed with too long a gap before this May. The cricket was always challenging for the English schoolboys. To arrive at a ground to see their opposition rolling out a heavy coconut mat was at best bemusing. Son Will felt the brunt of the bounce when he opened at Kampong in 1992 and at the age of 11 was peppered by their fast bowler; it was the last time that he ever batted without a thigh pad.
Two cricketers from VRA stand out. Victor Grandia posed us massive problems on the early tours both in Amsterdam and when he came over to Surrey. Likewise Leon Turmaine was clearly destined to play for the 1st team at VRA. I remain grateful to the latter’s father for taking the time to show Stuart Welch and I round some of, shall we say, the more interesting parts of Amsterdam one evening in 2004.
My love for VRA has had repercussions for my family too. Will played many times during the 2003 season for VRA and learnt a lot from the club. He remebers one particular innings with pride when he grafted to a workmanlike 50 for the 2nd XI claiming it was the most difficuult wicket he had ever played on and that was brilliant! Modest as ever. He and I have both played for the Comedians me in Holland and the both of us when they have toured this country. We even batted together with some success at Balcombe a while ago – he got a ton and me a 50, and I think I took some wickets too.
My most embarrassing cricketing moment happened when playing for VRA against Klein Zwitserland in 1996 whilst the Horsham team went to play Hilversum (described by the irrepressible Paul Baker as “the Gobi desert”). My gentle off spin was being smashed to all parts of the field behind the pavillion at VRA (now plastic, boo-hiss) by some gahstly hockey player. When fielding at point the ball was hit to me and the batsmen got into one of those horrendous muddles which saw them end up at the same (striker’s) end. Realising that I had all the time in the world to effect a run out I opted for the gentle underarm throw to the bowler but it went horribly wrong; I released the ball too late and instead of reaching the non-striker’s end it plopped down roughly where silly mid off would have been standing and the ghastly hockey player easily made his ground. I was left wishing the canals would swallow me up.
The overseas players at VRA have been a treat too. Darrin Murray was a legend and remains so by the sound of things. His compatriot Craig Cumming amused all one night when, during a cricket camp at VRA, he got fed up with a lippy Dutch kid and not only tied him to the flagpole on the pavillion but also taped his mouth shut – he wouldn’t get away with that these days in this country. Claude Henderson and his wife were also very kind looking after Will.
And so to 2014. The gap has been too long but it has been so good to renew friendships (Huib, Sieb, Paul, Harold, Benno, Tom, Jeroen) and make new ones (Alice and Jan). The weather may have been unkind but our Dutch hosts were not – thanks again to Desy, Doreen, Rashmi, Harold/Marja and Jan/Alice. My boys played well but were pretty confounded by young Lancelot, the best leg spinner we have come across this season.
It’s been too long and these tours must continue. Be assured VRA will be given a warm welcome in Cranleigh – let’s hope it won’t be too long.
VVV vs VRA 2
Saturday the 7th of June was away game that never was due to the 2014 ground share agreements with VVV. VRA II played this match on their very own 2nd field and with sun already shining early in the morning and a forecast indicating temperatures could reach 28oC all was set for a cracking day.
Jeroen Mulder was captain of the day in Rachit’s absence and got off to a great start by winning the toss. Given recent history a change of tactics was applied and it was decided to bat first and try and set a defendable total.
Unfortunately that plan didn’t get off to the best of starts with Hassan Alvi falling in the first over without troubling the scorebook (0) and triggering what turned out to be start of a great spell of out swing by K. Mirza. Martijn Besier strode out to the middle and returned almost immediately also for 0 as Mirza struck again in his 2nd over given him the perfect start of Wicket Maiden followed by Wicket Maiden, leaving VRA two down for just three runs.
Khalid Sherzad (3) was Mirza’s 3rd victim of the day in only his 3rd over (3 for 1) leaving Babar Lassi and Captain Morgan, sorry Mulder, at the crease trying to steady the VRA ship. Things looked up briefly as the first boundary and a few quick singles were taken from the other end but Mirza was back to bowl his 4th over and naturally take his 4th wicket for just 2 runs conceded. Faced with another late out swinger Jeroen had nicked off and was caught in the slips region for 8. Now 4 for 13 things didn’t look too great and it was up to Mark Gray who was still looking for his first league runs of the season. That personal bogey was broken though and with Babar Lassi a further 16 runs were added before Gray fell (ct. covers) to another late out swinger from Mirza (now with impressive figures of 5 for 9).
Starting down the barrel of a serious whipping, Babar Lassi and George Dunlop finally did what the earlier bats hadn’t. Left Mirza alone, saw out his 10 overs and steadily acquired runs from the other bowlers. They successfully built a 69 run partnership before Babar Lassi fell for a well built 41 runs. Now 99 runs were on the board and it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Wajdan Alem (5) hung around for a while creating a 7th wicket partnership of 37 mainly thanks to George Dunlop’s fine form as he began smashing the slow bowlers to all parts. Bilal Ahmed (22) consolidated the come back as he and George built a further 51 run partnership. Unfortunately our man of the moment, George Dunlop fell 10 short of his VRA maiden century. But his 90 was top notch with 4x6s and 7x4s in the mix.
Suresh Mahendram (13) and Dilip Samuel (1) almost saw us through the full 50 overs falling just a few balls short but setting a substantial total of 212 given the earlier events.
Into the 2nd innings and with half a chance the plan was simple; bowl tight line, give away no freebies, field well and make them suffer a bit in the heat and see what happened. Dilip Samuel struck in his 2nd over with a standard caught behind for Martijn Besier removing one of the openers for just 3. Unfortunately that was it for a while and VVV turned the tables and made us sweat it out in the sun for a long time. Jeroen mixed up the bowling attack trying 7 different people as they built a 2nd wicket partnership of 99 runs. However Bilal Ahmed with just his 3rd ball of the day surprised the other opener (22), with a half track off spinner which he duly returned for a C&B.
Z. Alvan (77) batting at 3, was their main stay smashing the ball to all parts hitting genuine deliveries and several free hits very cleanly and he and our extra’s count (45) ultimately took the game away from VRA. Bilal Ahmed removed him though with the assistance of a Jeroen Mulder’s catch but at 148-3 and lots of over we were left with an up hill task. A further 2 quick wickets from Babar Lassie bowling some tidy spin removed their dangerous player / coach and Bilal Ahmed’s 3rd wicket were enough gave a small glipse of hope but VVV batted sensibly and knocked off the target with 6 overs to spare and 5 wickets in hand.
Lesson’s of the week are: please keep the TC well informed of your availability as early as possible to ease the last minute selection changes and we need to get better in all facets of the game to fight for our position in the league. It will be a tough proposition given results so far and requires all team members to attend practice Wednesday’s and Friday’s, train hard and improve as a unit …

Door de regen in de ochtend konden we helaas niet eerder starten dan de normale starttijd van 13:00. Voor een 40-over wedstrijd in combinatie met zeer broeierig weer wisten we bij voorbaat dat we niet vroeg klaar zouden zijn. Gelukkig had iedereen de maandag vrij. Nog mooier was het dat Paul & Amil de buien hadden zien aankomen en het graswicket en de square hadden afgedekt. Toen ik om 11:30 aankwam begon Amil net met het verwijderen van de covers. Voor een vierde achtereenvolgende week op het gras van het eerste veld, scorer Wim in aantocht en een goed team op papier is het momenteel lekker toeven bij het derde.
Vreemd was het daarom ook dat ik voor de toss van mede clubgenoot en VRA 4 captain Sud te horen kreeg dat zij liever op het ‘plastic’ wilden spelen. Zij waren formeel gesproken de thuisspelende partij en stonden zogezegd in hun recht. Echter kon ik me niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat sommigen uit zijn team deze gouden kans met tegenzin aan hun neus voorbij lieten gaan. Het was een strategische keuze daar wij sinds drie weken gewend waren op een echt wicket te batten en zij hier weinig tot geen ervaring in hadden. Toen ik de ballen van hun openingsbowlers als umpire een half uur flinke stukken zag swingen kreeg ik er al iets minder de pee in. Desalniettemin een gemiste kans daar dit waarschijnlijk voor de laatste keer dit seizoen was aangezien het eerste en tweede vanaf komend weekend weer op zondag zullen spelen.
Ik had na een eerste gewonnen toss besloten te gaan batten, ook al mistte ik mijn top run scorer Thomas Pasierowski die in juni, het moet niet gekker worden, in Spanje was. De andere Thomas van VRA 3 was voor het eerst van het seizoen van de partij en ik besloot hem te laten openen met Phil. Ook al waren de gebroeders Spits na het bijwonen van het concert van de Stones in Landgraaf en een nachtje doorhalen in Maastricht niet op de toppen van hun fysieke kunnen dacht ik met Thomas op 2 en Bob-Jan op 3 een aardige top order te hebben. Behaalde resultaten uit het verleden bieden echter geen garantie voor de toekomst en het werd me al snel duidelijk dat Thomas de ballen weliswaar zag maar de versnelling in zijn armen door gebrekkige nachtrust en broeierig weer mistte. Het scoren kwam vooral voor rekening van Phil, die na 30 runs en een totaalscore van 31! LBW werd gegeven. Bob-Jan voelde met dank aan zijn broer gelijk druk om te scoren en verkeek zich op een listig balletje van hun spinner die even later ook Steve Kamper en Thomas inrekende. VRA III op 76/4 na 21 overs. Dit zag er niet heel best uit. Debutant Ashish Thapa begon goed terwijl Amil door dezelfde umpire als Phil LBW werd gegeven voor ‘0’ runs. De top order aan de kant met de score op 80/5. VRA 4 voelde zich terecht de bovenliggende partij maar liet dat wel wat overdadig merken.
Ashish en ondergetekende probeerde de innings te herstellen en brachten allereerst de 100 op het bord alvorens Ashish zich verkeek en gevangen ging na 16 waardevolle runs. Onze tail bestaat wekelijks uit clean hitters en het is daarom zaak dat tenminste één van hen de ballen goed raakt. Deze week niet Piotr die ook ten prooi viel aan hun spinner die zo zijn 5-wicket haul realiseerde. Duncan Cooke daarentegen zag ze wel als meloenen en samen brachten we de score uiteindelijk tot een verdedigbaar totaal van 186 na 40 overs. Duncan eindigde 46* en ik voegde daar 34* aan toe.
Tijdens de lunch bleek dat mijn bowlers zich groen en geel hadden geërgerd aan de wat overdreven banter van de clubgenoten van de tegenpartij. Zo ook Amil die samen met Piotr onze aanval opende. Openers Laki en Sud doorstonden echter de eerste aanval totdat Sud zich na de eerste change verkeek op een bal van Piotr en de bal hard, laag doch direct in de handen van Duncan op midwicket speelde. Van een oefenpotje vorig seizoen wisten we dat op drie hun sterspeler Rahul Bhatt inkwam en samen met Laki kwam er een indrukwekkend partnership op gang. Pas na 95 runs besloot Laki de bal recht in mijn handen te spelen en hadden we misschien een beetje grip op de wedstrijd. Met nog 8 wickets in handen en 4 runs per over nodig had VRA 4 evenwel de bovenhand. De druk lag nu wel in zijn geheel bij Rahul, die aan de andere kant twee wickets zag vallen. Met een schot probeerde hij over de man op midwicket de boundary te halen maar ik ben niet voor niks 1.95m. Met deze vang zaten we weer terug in de wedstrijd, begonnen de topbowlers die VRA 3 heeft (Khan, Piotr, Humayun) weer naar hun mogelijkheden te bowlen en viel het ene na het andere wicket. Na 150 runs, waarvan 40 extra’s, viel het laatste wicket.
Een overwinning die er lang niet uit had gezien als een overwinning. In de huddle na de wedstrijd concludeerden we dat het volharden ons de overwinning had bezorgd. Een wedstrijd die we gevoelsmatig alleen konden verliezen leverde de de derde overwinning op. Volgende week Groen & Wit thuis. Nu doorpakken!

We krijgen helaas te weinig spontane aanmeldingen van ballensponsoren. Daar gaan we wat aan doen! Het Vijfde team vertoont zoals elk jaar de nodige startproblemen en andere tekenen van roestigheid, waardoor de verslagen er tot nu toe een beetje bij ingeschoten zijn. Captain Harold voorspeld echter verbetering en een eerste verslag zal komende week gelezen kunnen worden.

We moesten er helaas te lang op wachten, maar er is een nieuwe inzending binnen voor de HT Photo Contest.
Zami 2 (SAT Comedians) doet een duit in het nog mager gevulde zakje. Deze foto is genomen tijdens een wedstrijd Zami 1 vs Zami 2.
De opdracht was "bedenk dit seizoen met je team een gedurfde en surrealistische cricket setting en breng dit 'professioneel' in beeld." Volgens de inzender voldoet de foto aan de voorwaarden. Wij hebben onze twijfels, maar willen u de foto niet onthouden. Surrealistisch is deze setting zeker en Kappelle met een roze sun hat is om meerdere redenen übergedurfd.

Na het hele ZAMI 1 team van VRA te zijn aangekomen op het Rood & Wit cricket club hebben de aanvoerders getost en werd de tegenstander verwelkomt om te gaan batten. Michael Bryant en Mijndert van der Spek waren de openers van VRA ZAMI 1. Al vanaf de eerste over werd er druk gezet op de tegenstander door Michael en Mijndert. Mijndert pakte in zijn eerste over al wicket dankzij een goede van Michael.
Khanzadah Waziri kwam als firstchange bowler en bouwde de druk op de tegenstander nog meer. Al gauw nam hij 3 wickets en miste helaas zijn hattrick. Na 18 overs zette de tegenstander 48 runs op de scoreboard met verlies van 6 wickets. Ondanks het ontzettend mooi en behoorlijk warme weer hadden de spelers van VRA het bijna opgegeven op het veld. Bijna op het eind van de eerste inning werden onze bowlers een beetje te duur waardoor het totaal van 75-9 naar 123-9 werd.
Op naar de lunch en het beviel de VRA’ers niet echt want er was te weinig te eten en te drinken. Kort gezegd: de organisatie viel wat tegen. Maar goed, dus na de lunch werd de batting line-up bekend gemaakt door aanvoerder Mijndert. Sheyan Patel en Sud mochten openen. De VRA batsmen zetten gelijk druk op de tegenstander door een paar boundaries te slaan vroeg in de tweede inning. Sheyan (31) en Sud (24) werden allebei uitgemaakt en toen kwam Michael Bryant aan bat samen met onze VRA 4 batsman. Michael kreeg weinig support van zijn mede batsmen maar dat had geen invloed op zijn batting. Hij begon na 2 overs al met hitten en maakte er al snel 34* samen Julian Molenaar die de winning runs naar de boundary sloeg. Een superb captaincy van Mijndert van der Spek met behulp van Michael en Sheyan Patel.

VRA ZAMI 2 vs HCC ZAMI 1 - 31 mei
Het onderstaande is alleen bedoeld voor ZAMI-spelers van VRA
Meer dan eens krijg ik de vraag: 'Wat is de betekenis van die prestigieuze MC&CB Award van de VRA ZAMI's en waarvoor wordt deze prijs jaarlijks uitgereikt?'. Wel nu, officieel heet de prijs de Mugs Clogs & Cement Boots VRA ZAMI Cricket Award. Gemakshalve wordt deze trofee door het gros der Zamisten kortweg de MCCB Award genoemd.
Clogsy Mugsy en Cement Boots zijn de bijnamen van 2 minder atletische doch niet minder enthousiaste VRA SAT Comedians spelers waarvan de naam mij plots is ontschoten. Deze 2 lieden ervoeren het immer als groot gemis, dat er geen VRA ZAMI Aanmoedigingprijs bestond. In 2002 is het MCCB plan bedacht. Om enigszins af te wijken van wat doorgaans gebruikelijk is - een eigenschap die overigens de meeste ZAMI spelers typeert - hebben zij bedacht dat de MCCB Award moet worden uitgereikt aan een VRA ZAMI speler die zich zowel on als off-field het meest heeft onderscheiden tijdens een cricketseizoen. Dat wordt in het algemeen gezien als de belichaming van de ZAMI spirit. De ingenieuze jurering behoefde enige uitwerking en derhalve geschiedde de eerste uitreiking pas in 2008.
Deze prijs houdt dus het midden tussen een Most Valuable Player trofee en een 12th Man cup. Degene die goed cricket paart aan het initiëren en organiseren van talloze extra-curriculaire ZAMI activiteiten, maakt grote kans deze award aan het einde der seizoen op zijn schouw of dressoir te mogen plaatsen. Feitelijk is het de enige echte en officiële ZAMI Ztimuleringsprijs.
Wie zitten er in de jury? De jury bestaat uit het duo Adrian “Mugsy” Molloy en Toon “Cement Boots” Hintzen. Helaas is Mugsy een tiental jaar geleden geremigreerd daar hij na een 8e mislukte maagband operatie in het AMC, door de Unie van Ziektenkostenverzekeraars tot persona non grata werd bestempeld. Dit moet niet geheel los worden gezien van een zestal pogingen tot liposuctie bij Mugsy, die allen plots moesten worden gestaakt. In plaats van onderhuids vetweefsel, bleken er enorme hoeveelheden onverteerd Febo-voer plus verpakkingsmateriaal uit zijn abdomen te worden gepompt. Het advies van Nederlandse doktoren om zich toch eers een gezonde levensstijl aan te meten alvorens weer te kunnen worden geopereerd, sloeg hij telkens in de wind. Uit kostenoverwegingen is hij toen gesommeerd door tal van gezondheidsinstanties om zich in eigen contreien door ware specialisten én op rekening van de Australische autoriteiten te laten behandelen. Helaas heeft ook de Aboriginal wonderdokter de vetzucht van Mugsy niet kunnen temperen. Enfin, u kunt het zelf bewonderen als hij in juli Nederland aandoet (mits hij door de gate past op Schiphol).
Hoe worden ZAMI-spelers gejureerd? Iedere VRA ZAMI wedstrijd wordt op kunstige én listige wijze geregistreerd. Zo volgen wij ook een ieders gangen vóór en nà zijn wedstrijd. Alles wat een Zamist extra doet voor de club wordt met extra MCCB punten gewaardeerd. Waarlijk alle cricket-gerelateerde activiteiten van VRA ZAMI 1, 2 en 3 spelers worden geregistreerd én beoordeeld. Vraagt u mij niet hoe dat kan. We doen het gewoon. De bijzonder ingenieuze mathematische formules waarmee wij wekelijks de MCCB punten toewijzen (of in mindering brengen), doet de Duckworth-Lewis-methode verbleken tot een bijzonder knullig kinderrijmpje. Wij kunnen over deze methodiek helaas geen mededelingen doen.
Aan het eind van het seizoen worden de punten van iedere speler opgeteld en daar rolt nagenoeg vanzelf een winnaar uit. In het onverhoopte geval er spelers een gelijk aantal punten hebben behaald, dan voorkomt de door de jury beïnvloede speling van het lot alsook onze volstrekt subjectieve willekeur, zo iets triviaals als een ex aequo uitslag.
Met belangstelling zien wij uit naar alle ZAMI wedstrijden en evenementen die nog gaan komen. Moge de beste allround Zamist van onze keuze dit jaar de MCCB Award winnen. Ik geef thans het woord aan de andere helft van de MCCB jury, collega adjudicator Adrianus Outbackus Molloy aka Mugsy,

ZAMI friends,
As every ZAMI player at VRA knows, the Mugs Clogs & Cement Boots VRA ZAMI Cricket Award (aka the MCCB Award) is bestowed annually upon a great individual, plucked from the VRA ZAMI Army for cricketing exploits and off field antics. I am lucky enough to make up one half of the MCCB jury with none other than Toon Hintzen – Dam Square statue and VRA through and through. We determine a worthy recipient at years end, as we want the magnificent VRA ZAMI spirit not only to survive, but to prosper. This spirit is infectious. Way back when I was transferred to work in Amsterdam I was blessed enough to stumble across VRA and its surrounds in the Bos. I was even luckier to meet the strange, crazy, nutty Dutch cricket aficionados who called ZAMI their home. Well, soon after it became my home as well. The passion, spirit and enthusiasm for the game is second to none. When you see the venues and pitches we have to play on back home in Oz, you are so lucky to have such a magnificent facility – I mean social cricket on an international ground? VRA quite simply is an awesome place and the ZAMI spirit lights it up. The MCCB VRA ZAMI Cricket Award keeps that fire burning!
As an official MCCB Adjudicator I need to award weekly points to you, VRA ZAMI players. How can I do that from Sydney you ask??? Easy. I spoke to an old cricket buddy of mine, Barack in the White House and said: hey, lend me one of your spy drones. Believe it or not, hovering far about the lush green of the Amsterdamse Bos, floats the MCCB Drone, casting an Endemol-like Big Brother sort of eye over all the ZAMI army, ensuring that the ZAMI doctrine is being adhered to both on and off the field. The bowling, the batting, the fielding, the 3rd innings, the support to run a club like VRA; I see it all. You fall off your bike in the ride home – bang, see that too. Nothing escapes us! So each week I fire up Skype, and have a long discussion with Toon “Cement Boots” Hintzen as we gather intelligence on the VRA ZAMI ARMY to determine the outstanding performances of the previous weekend.
When we recently had our inter-hemispherical discussions about THE outstanding player on Saturday 31st May the vote was unanimous – we all bow to the king, the Mufti, The Cricktator: FLORIS KAPPELLE. Flo – ever the inquisitive one – thinks he is the best player EVERY week, but for the sake of understanding our reasoning, he asked us to shed some light on how we came to our conclusions. So in the spirit of ZAMI cricket, my colleague Toon and I decided to let you have a sneak peak at our observations from the match VRA ZAMI 2 vs HCC ZAMI 1, played on Saturday the 31st of may 2014 on VRA’s 3d ground.
For starters I love it when we beat HCC ZAMI. Not because they aren’t nice people – quite on the contrary, but I feel I must relive some ZAMI folklore that resonates so strongly with me about the playing days with VRA. Back in the 2002 season they were undefeated up until the very last match of the season against us down in Den Haag. We would be easy pickings or so they thought, and they had T-shirts made up: HCC ZAMI Undefeated ZAMI Champions and were wearing them under their cricket tops. I happened to catch a glimpse of this shirt during our match and boy, did it fire up the VRA boys when I told them in a mad rage. We had these blokes on the rack and were about to get the thumbs down from our emperor to put them to the sword when one of their talisman Harm Lamaker saved the day and spared their blushes by a whisker… they got home just, and were able to proudly parade their shirts… severe “Haagsche arrogantie” but well done anyway… we don’t hold a grudge (publicly).
Fast forward 6 months to game 1 of the 2003 season, VRA SAT Comedians vs HCC ZAMI 1 and I was lucky enough to be bowling the last over of the ZAMI match against one Mr Lamaker. They needed 18 off it. If there was one guy who could get 18 off an over in ZAMI, it’s Harm. His name says it all (English meaning). My man Floris Kappelle spilt a catch at mid-off but he stopped runs, and it came down to Mr Lamaker needing 10 off the last ball. I have NEVER EVER enjoyed bowling a ball so much in my life and gave him a dolly with the wishes – belt it out of the park if you must… he missed, we won… we loved it. From HCC ZAMI Undefeated ZAMI Champions to the status HCC-ZAMI-got-their-butts-kicked-big-time. I had bowled the best delivery of my live to those friendly but very arrogant HCC ZAMI bunch. We celebrated HARD coz now we were the undefeated ones in 2003 (I think I fell off my bike early next morning on the way home!!!).
Fast forward 11 years and it was on again: The VRA SAT Comedians vs HCC ZAMI. The MCCB Drone was positioned nicely above Holland, making all the MCCB observations high above the willow thwacking against the red leather. If one of those hideous shirts appeared from many moons ago, an air strike was a button away, but luckily it was averted.
The observations were as follows: The Bos and de Diepput both have their dinosaurs: namely Flo Kappelle from VRA and Willem Winckel from HCC. Field: VRA Ground 3. Weather: Spectacular, sunny, 25 degrees, slight wind off the Noord Zee. Pitch: Plastic, good bounce, no erratic seam movement Outfield: Mowed and trim, some odd pubic patches though Expectations: lots of boundaries, high scoring match. VRA ZAMI 2 Line-up: Floris Kappelle, Joost Dekkers, Willem Van Mierlo, Toon Hintzen, Huib Bier, Amil Prasad, Sebastiaan Capel, Robert Prenen and Theo Lindemann (wk). Hang on that’s only 9… Ok some serious MCCB penalty points for this captaincy misdemeanour. Noted: HCC ZAMI appears to have only 8 players. A VRA Welshman has wondered over to their flock. An intercepted transcript has come in – he has defected. I don’t call in the attack choppers and let Mike go on his merry Welsh way opening the batting for HCC, who were sent in by Captain Prenen. 9 a side it is then!
1st innings The batting strength of HCC ZAMI 1 is not the same as years gone by. In fact the Welsh defector Mike George was 3rd highest scorer on 24. Adeel Haq top scored with 33 n.o. whilst Robert Vermeulen chimed in with 27. They scored 125 in 30 overs. 4.17 an over. Nursing home pace. Well done VRA: The bowling attack was efficient and effective. The attack spearheaded by Josti Ham Kaas Dekkers (2 wickets) and Sebas ‘Guv’ Capel (2 wickets) who both lived up to their feisty expectations. Amil ‘Appie’ Prasad has decided to test his cricketing mettle at the highest level, rising from Topklasse to the crème de la crème – ZAMI. He chimed in with a wicket but needs to improve or he will get sent back to Topklasse until his game is up to ZAMI standard. Floris Kappelle also rolled the rickety arm over, his flight causing some navigational issues for the MCCB Drone, but he too snaffled a wicket with high tempo bowling. Any captain should lead from the front and Robert Prenen did this: The Drone captured him tripping over his iron chord when ensuring his jock-strap was crisp and crease-free, so he was unable to bowl with the venom he usually possesses. He could easily have been a withdrawal but he led his troops into battle – bad shoulder and all – for his loyalty and unwavering commitment to the ZAMI cause. Willem ‘Mickey’ Van Mierlo was very unlucky not to grab a few wickets, his unorthodox spinners causing HCC no end of headaches. His pressure told at the other end where they pricked like balloons.
The fielding was noted as sublime. The VRA ZAMI actually moved in the field: Capt Prenen caught the Welshman off the bowling of Capel for his crafty 24 runs (in a HCC shirt – massive MCCB penalty points!). Huib Bier held onto a catch long enough enabling the batsman to leave the arena after a tasty Prasad delivery. There was full expectation that the ball would drop out of Huib’s trembling hands but it wasn’t to be – to the delight of his teammates. Amil Prasad showed the benefit of taking his game to another level in ZAMI, holding two spectacular one-handed diving catches. Had your regular ZAMI Statue aka Cement Boots attempted to snaffle one of those chances, it is likely he would have shattered into 1000 pieces. Prasad was clearly taking the ZAMI game to another level and bringing out the inner Topklasse beast in all of them! The Drone also captured images of wicky Theooooooooooo Lindemann – a true ZAMI hero – talking as he does best to the batsmen. He informed Mr Damhuis that his furniture will be rattled – 2 overs later it was, in a nice run out. Theo, the one and only SAT Comedians visionary, was cheered on by a massive crowd, singing we love you Theo, we dooooooo. Extra special praise must be levelled at Captain Prenen who ensured his troops were on song for the invading Haagsche Harries and this culminated in an excellent all round display in the field worthy of higher recognition. His field placements were outstanding on the thermal imagery, and our listening devices captured plenty of strong captaincy banter as he felt his heavy Dutch foot sink onto the throat of the struggling HCC, who limped to 125. We like that very much at VRA.
2nd Innings VRA were next to grace the pitch and Josti Dekkers opened the batting with the marvel, the grand mufti of Dutch cricket… Floris Kappelle. On the 30th April here in Oz we celebrate FLODAG. For he is the real king of the lowlands and flat pitches. Sadly JD was unable to be at the Kings side for long, succumbing to a Haagsche cracker losing his furniture, gone in the 6th over for 10 runs……
This brought to an end a magnificent 50 run partnership with his concrete mate at the other end, Toon Hintzen. I believe Toon allowed the King to score all the runs in exchange of control over Limburg. Well done Toon, a shocking exchange = deduct MCCB points. At number 4 in waltzed Willem van Mierlo, free of the noose that can be captaincy. Having relinquished the skippers armband has seen Willem’s game blossom both on and off the field, his exploits being carefully noted and places him high on the list in terms of the MCCB award for 2014. His arrival meant Concrete Feet Toon Hintzen was now the designated batsman who engaged in a stoush of epic proportions with his good friend and ZAMI stalwart in that Welsh bloke… forget his name. There were some tense moments as the banter flew between the two but the moment of truth exploded on field 3. The Welshman lobbed a Wobbler that looked like a Yorker but soon became a rank half volley. In 20 years of cricket Toon has never moved his feet at the crease or in the field. Yet he roared down the pitch and connected with the ball soooo sweetly, that it soared across the English channel landing in some far flung field of Wales. ‘Got fetch Mikey’ said Toon much to the Welshman’s disdain, he was hauled off by his HCC skipper, called a taxi for Schiphol and was soon off to look for the ball in another country.
Eventually Toon was to fall, his wicket re-arranged by a non-Welsh bowler, for 33 very well compiled runs. Huib Bier (the best Dutch name ever!!!) joined Willem and they scored 11no and 17no respectively to steer VRA to another magic win over HCC, and doing so at a run rate that meant they passed the HCC total inside 23 overs = more beer drinking time. Bonus MCCB points there for sure!
The two teams retreated to the VRA clubhouse for the social festivities that embody the spirit in which ZAMI cricket is played in, and the social side of the game that is so important and so much fun. There is enough rubbish in this world you have to worry about and the sanctuary that is VRA allows you to forget the woes of the world and enjoy a game with your mates. The MCCB Drone sent back images of very late departures from the clubhouse which is a good sign – extra points for those willing to extend the social virtues of ZAMI cricket.
Finally – well done to Floris Kapelle who was announced the MCCB ZAMI player of last week. You deserve this honorary tittle by your fine display of cricketing skills in the match against HCC ZAMI 1 and your unmatched 3d innings enthusiasm. Flootje, you seem 20 years younger these days! What is your secret? Are you working out? Are you on performance-enhancing medication? Are you in love?
I can safely say in the 10 years since leaving Holland, I have never come across another Floris. He was, is and always will be the most unique specimen of the Homo Zamiens. We have looked but we have not found! He is one of those characters who is the heart and soul of a club like VRA. Crazy? Yes. Mad? Yes. A Dictator? Yup. A passionate cricketer? Holy smoke – like you would never believe. And whilst Father Time is placing added strain on that Adonis build of Flo’s, it is great to see the old master still has what it takes, and is capable of giving the ultimate ZAMI cricketing lesson. Bloemendaal ZAMI vs ZAMI 2
Zaterdag 7 juni togen wij richting het pittoreske Bloemendaal voor onze wedstrijd tegen de lokale Hillbillies Sportsteam Bloomingdale SAM1. Van te voren goed geinformeerd door onze vrienden van VRA Zami 1 (zij hadden hier reeds tegen gespeeld, zijn vermorzeld door de Bloomingdalers voor 110 all out, waarna deze sport Billies over het totaal van 110 heen gingen in amper 14 overs). Het weer was warm, zonnig en met een heerlijke bries zo was ons beloofd door Meteo Consult. Zoals altijd was Meteo Consult weer omgekocht voor Pinksteren door de collectieve horeca Nederland, waardoor we veel Duitse toeristen richting de kust tegenkwamen en het bewolkt en drukkend warm begon.
Captain Beam me up Bobby Prenen had wat ringers meegenomen waaronder Amil en Benno. Hij verloor de toss en onze Sixpack Bloomingdalers besloten eerst te batten. Zeer verdienstelijk kwamen zij tot een totaal van 198 voor 5. Onze bowling was prima, en de fitness adepten van de kust wisten hier net iets beter mee om te gaan. De Nachtburgemeester van Amsterdam Zuid, Capel en Bamix Hazewijer pakten ieder 1 wicket en Opperringer Amil was goed voor 3 wickets (waarvan 1 met een prachtig uitgevoerde slower ball). Hierbij was 1 vang voor Humaun en 1 vang voor good old Flo die na 20 overs rust keurig op de juiste plek stond.
Na een goed verzorgde thee van CC Bloemendaal (met Limburgse vla, Brabantse Bosbrokjes, Gelderse rookworstjes, Barneveldse eiersalade, Overijssels Oerbrood en nog veel meer), was het de beurt aan de atletische gymnasten van Bloomingdale om te laten zien of zij het gevecht met de oudere Bibbers aan zouden kunnen. In de eerste over was er een goedkope runout. Bloomingdale was echt wel fit en snel. Allen met een redelijk tot goede arm. Dit werd verkeerd ingeschat en kostte het wicket van Humaun for Duck. Een klein beetje run out. We herpakten ons. Onze Nachtburgemeester Capel ruimde na 5 overs iets te snel het veld voor 10 runs: LBW na lang nadenken door umpire Benno. Ook onze Opperringer Amil ging er te snel vanaf met 11 runs en clean bowled. Een partnership van Willy three fingers van Mierlo en Huib Kleintje Bier van 30 hield ons nog in de race en de score liep gelijk op. Na een duck van Benno (Benno welkom terug op de velden!) betrad Shirley Abbassy Jaffry het strijdperk: hij had er zin in en was extreem gefocused. De zessen en vieren vlogen ons snel om de oren. Helaas viel het wicket van Willy three fingers na een partnership van 28... maar we lagen we nog steeds op koers!
Uiteindelijk viel ook het wicket van Shirley (23 runs) waarna good Old Go with the Flo Kappelle en Toon the Statue Hintzen souverein in de hitte de partij wisten uit te spelen, en helaas niet naar zich toe te trekken. Hiervoor waren de Bloomingdalers iets meer in conditie dan onze teammates van VRA. We zijn na 35 over blijven steken op 147 voor 7. Een troost is dat we het een stuk beter hebben gedaan dan onze broeders van VRA Zami1. Dat levert dan wel geen punten op maar zeker wel moraal voor 23 augustus aanstaande!
Na de wedstrijd zijn wij door de jongens van Bloomingdale uitgenodigd voor een BBQ en zijn we even in een tijdmachine 15 jaar teruggestapt: met verhalen, speeches en een heerlijke studenten BBQ met rauwe hamburgers, kipsate met gratis salmonella saus, de niet te missen varkensworstjes met veel zalf en vooral zonder sla! Het was gezellig: een prachtige cricket dag, een prachtige omgeving en club, een mooie pot en leuke tegenstanders: deze jongens zijn een aanwinst voor de Zami, maar dan wel een poultje hoger wel te verstaan!
Enigszins jaloers kijk ik terug op hun fitheid, berustend in de wetenschap dat zij er over een jaar of 15 net zo fit bij lopen als wij nu. En wij waren er weer bij dit weekend! In style en in cricket, hopelijk for many years to come!
