How's That verschijnt tijdens het cricketseizoen wekelijks
Voorwoord
Ik durf er rustig voor uit te komen: ik ben een anglofiel. Mij doe je geen groter plezier dan met een rustig voortkabbelende zondagmiddag aan de rand van een village green waar een mengeling van de plaatselijke jeunesse dorée en het ‘gewone’ volk zich overgeeft aan een cricketmatch tegen een naburig dorp. De wind ruist door het geboomte en je droomt van het bezoek dat je volgende dag zult brengen aan een stad, bij voorkeur Cambridge, waar het wemelt van de antiquariaten. In de tussentijd wordt er nu en dan een run gescoord, maar dat lijkt niet het belangrijkste. Het liefst zou de tijd gewoon stilstaan. Het besef dat er ook anglofoben zijn die Engeland en de Engelsen haten deert mij niet. Met een glimlach heb ik heel lang geleden kennisgenomen van Willem Frederik Hermans’ essay ‘Monoloog van een anglofoob’ waarin hij de Engelsen omschreef als ‘krijtwitte wezens, Britten genaamd die, niet zelden door rood haar gedekt, een half-ondergelopen gebergte in de Noordzee bewonen, waar zij de naam Groot-Brittannië aan hebben gegeven. - Ik haat dat volk.’ Hij haatte het, ik had en heb het lief, behalve als het om cricket gaat. Dan kunnen ze onuitstaanbaar zijn. Dat bleek weer eens op de zeventiende mei 2019. Engeland trad op Trent Bridge in Nottingham aan tegen Pakistan. De Pakistanen deden het niet onverdienstelijk, want 340 voor 7 is beslist geen score om je voor te generen, maar toch was de stemming onder de Engelse commentatoren wat lacherig. Zeker de Pakistanen hadden hun best gedaan en hadden zeker talentrijke spelers in hun gelederen. Maar 340… Hier lieten ze een beschaafde stilte vallen om luisteraar en kijker zelf in te laten vullen dat dit totaal bij lange na niet voldoende zou zijn om de almachtige Engelsen van de overwinning af te houden. Dat was het inderdaad niet, maar dat was vooral te danken aan een achterhoedegevecht van Ben Stokes, een Engelsman die perfect beantwoordt aan de door Hermans gegeven omschrijving. Met nog drie ballen te gaan was de zege een feit (341 voor 7). Je hoorde de commentatoren glunderen. Ze hadden gelijk gehad, zij het nipt. Mike Marqusee schreef ooit een inzichtrijk boek met als titel ‘Anyone but England!’, een exclamatie waarbij ik me van harte aansluit.

Opnieuw een teleurstelling Wie gewend is aan de enorme totalen die in de ODI-serie tussen Engeland en Pakistan op het bord komen - 350 is absoluut niet zeker voor de winst - schrikt even als er met veel moeite in krap 50 overs slechts 189 runs te noteren vallen. Dat overkwam VRA in Den Haag. Het betekende na de nederlaag tegen ACC een ijskoude douche. Zeker Erik Szwarczysnki bracht het tot 61 verdienstelijke runs en Emile kon tevreden zijn met zijn 38, maar de rest bleef daar ver bij achter, zodat het voor de VRA-supporters op het HCC-terras weer uit leek te lopen op een potje tandenknarsen. De eerste overs van onze strike bowler Quirijn Gunning waren weliswaar veelbelovend, maar de lbw-appeals die luid over de Diepput galmden vonden geen gehoor bij de umpires en toen zelfs hij een keer voor zes ging leek alle hoop ijdel. Het was dat Vikram Singh op het bowlen van Peter Borren een fraaie vang hoog boven zijn hoofd weg plukte, anders was er voor de VRA-aanhang helemaal weinig te juichen geweest. Via 39 voor 1 ging het naar 77 voor 2 (weer een wicket voor Peter, nu een lbw). Daarna was het lang wachten op een nieuw wapenfeit aan onze zijde. Dat kwam vlak voor het scheiden van de maker toen Quirijn HCC-opener Itagi voor 90 afwisselend sprankelende en geduldige runs naar de kant kreeg. De match werd passend afgesloten met een zes die ver in de struiken belandde (194 voor3). ‘Moeten we ons zorgen maken?’ werd er hier en daar op de VRA-afdeling van het terras gemompeld. ‘Is dit de opmaat tot een slecht seizoen?’ Maar nee hoor. Meteen daarna blonk er weer iets van optimisme. Het was per slot van rekening pas de tweede wedstrijd. Alle kans op herstel. Liefst deze zaterdag tegen HBS
ZAMI 1 - Kampong

Game II of the Zami Double-Header saw Zami 1 take on the team from Kampong at the 3rd field
Captain Louis won the toss and with a line-up including up to 8 bowlers took the decision to field first. Unfortunately for VRA, the Kampong openers got off to a flyer and started building an impressive partnership. Bowlers were regularly rotated by the captain only to be dispatched to all parts of the ground as the opening partnership raced passed 100. Finally it was Ernst with the breakthrough, followed up with a second wicket next ball (unfortunately the hat trick ball went astray). A 3rd wicket to Ernst (3/17) and the timely retirement of the Kampong opener for 103 (65 balls and seven 6s) slowed the run rate significantly. Wickets fell regularly over the last 5 overs – Prasun (2/34) and Andrew (2/26) - and the Kampong innings closed at 194 from their 25 overs.
Chasing a target at nearly 8 runs an over requires a brisk start, but unfortunately for Zami 1 it was the falling of regular wickets and not the scoring of boundaries that kept the scorers busy. First to go was Doctor Mike, fresh from a 9 month break from playing and training (4th ball duck), soon followed by Richard and Daneesh. At 3 for 17, the forecast was bleak. But as they say in the classics, “Cometh the moment, cometh the man” and for Zami 1, de Man was Ewoud. First was a stabilising partnership with Jelger (12) as Ewoud began to find his eye and the boundaries to his liking. A more substantial 70 run partnership with Louis (12) followed as the score raced passed 100 and our opponents began to feel some pressure. The penultimate over went for 20 runs as Ewoud reached his century, leaving a further 19 required from the last. A fairytale finish was not to be, as Ewoud holed out in the deep and Zami 1 fell 16 runs short of the target. A tremendous innings from Ewoud - his 110 runs came from 78 balls and included eleven 4s and three 6s.
While Zami 1 finished the day without the victory, spirits are high and better days are just around the corner.

ZAMI 2 - Rood en Wit
Amazing Arsal
Cricket kan gezien worden als een individuele teamsport. Vaak is de inzet van het gehele team nodig om een wedstrijd te winnen, maar af en toe is het een enkele speler die door een prestatie het verschil maakt. Dat is precies wat er gebeurde in de wedstrijd tussen Zami 2 en Rood en Wit Zami op zaterdag 18 mei.
Zami 2 - Rood en Wit is en wedstrijd die al een aantal jaren niet is gespeeld. Helaas zaten we lang niet bij elkaar in de poule, maar gelukkig is daar dit seizoen verandering in gekomen. Door omstandigheden van het eerste veld is het gebruikelijke format van 35 over aangepast naar een t20 met een aanvangstijd van iets eerder dan gebruikelijk. Dat omdat Zami 1 tegen Kampong op hetzelfde veld kon worden gespeeld.
Zami 2 werd als eerst het veld in gestuurd. Het was een degelijke performance, niks speciaals. Twee wickets voor skipper Prenen, twee voor Hendrik, een voor Maxwell en een voor Sebas. Nog een vangetje voor Sebas tussendoor. Niks aan de hand, Rood en Wit eindigde met een score van 143 voor 6 uit 20 overs. Siegers had voor Rood en Wit met een persoonlijke score van 53.
Door het gebrek aan tijd was er van tevoren al besloten dat er geen lunch zou zijn tussen de innings. Dat bleek funest voor de batting-performance van de meeste zami 2 regulars. De enige die er geen probleem mee leek te hebben was de vastende Arsal die vanwege de Ramadan voorlopig deze periode overdag toch niks eet. Arsal mocht dan ook openen van de captain.
De statistieken van de innings van Zami 2 spreken boekdelen over de prestatie van een enkele batsman. Op een totaalscore van 147, zijn er door Rood en Wit tien extra’s gegooid. Er waren aan de kant van VRA maar liefst zes(!) ducks, een score van 3, een van 2 runs en er was nog een 1 not out. En toch heeft Zami 2 kunnen winnen.
Arsal Rehman, een jongen die jarenlang bij VRA in de jeugd heeft gespeeld. Net teruggekeerd uit Pakistan om in Amsterdam te studeren en uiteindelijk zo hoog mogelijk te kunnen gaan cricketen. Hij liet aan iedereen zien waartoe hij in staat is met het bat. Met stijl en klasse maakte Arsal 104 not out in 57 ballen. In zijn innings, die hij rustig opbouwde, schoot hij tien vieren en vijf zessen. Hij speelde onverstoord door na het vallen van alle wickets om hem heen, en gaf zelf geen enkele kans weg. Er was een partnership van 57 met Frederik (27), maar buiten dat heeft Arsal eigenhandig de wedstrijd naar zich toegetrokken en beslist in de laatste over met nog twee magistrale vieren.
Het was zijn eerste century, en ik geloof dat er zeker nog veel meer gaan komen. Het was geweldig om te zien. Op VRA gaan we nog veel van deze jonge speler genieten.

Clash Of The Woods: Zami 2 - Zami 1
It was a chilly but fine spring day in Amstelveen and the KNCB fixture gods had thrown up an early season ‘Clash of the Woods’.
The players descended upon the VRA clubhouse in plenty of time for the 14.20 start (delayed from 13.30 not due weather, but general coffee and chat on the balcony).
Our two esteemed captains Louis Collingnon (1’s) and Bob Prenen (2’s) decided on this particular occasion not to toss off together but instead mutually agree that the 2’s would bat first with the 1’s taking the field.
Field 3 was looking the best I have ever seen it and anticipation was in the air as the 2’s reliable and often quick scoring opening pair of Harold Horsman and Thomas Spits walked to crease to take their marks. They were to be facing the Curtley and Courtney, the Wasim and Waqar, the Broad and Anderson of Zami cricket which is of course Waheed and Jain AKA Danesh and Prasuk.
And so we begin. The 2’s on the boundary had not even taken their seats as their talismanic batsman Horsman was clean bowled by Jain in the very first ball of the innings. Met with an audible gasp from his team mates and contrasting wild celebrations from the 1’s as they knew this was a crucial early wicket.
Waheed and Jain continued their trademark tight and sharp early bowling and Spits was removed in the 3rd over being given out caught behind from bat nicking ball... or was it bat hitting pad??? Or was it pad hitting ball??? Anyway the 2’s were in dire straights at 7-2 with their two openers removed.
Joost Dekkers (8) and debutant Dan Enslin brought some stability to the innings. Enslin eventually top scoring with 47 for the 2’s with some fine driving shots mixed in with some adventurous yet effective hoiks. Not to mention some friendly fielding from the 1’s who were clearly trying their best to help out the new guy and welcome him to the club by dropping him twice. He was well supported by Sebastian Capel (22) and eventually bowled by 1’s skipper Collingnon who ended with superb figures of 3-21 from 5 overs.
Maarten Slagter could only add 1 run before he looped a full pitched ball from Prasun Bannerjee who was all of sudden possessed by the spirit of Usain Bolt to sprint and cover the ground and make a superb diving catch. You always hold on to them off your own bowling. Frederik ten Kate added 21 before Collingnon called on his new but experienced signing of Jelger Gustafsson to bowl. He temporarily forgot that the ball is supposed to be bowled onto the strip. However, he was reminded of this and went on to take the wickets of Ten Kate (bowled) and Menno Spits (12) with an impressive and surprisingly athletic catch from Waheed.
Nigel Drenthe (14), Hendrik Kruger (3), and Tobias Maessen (11 n.o.) scored quickly to end the 2’s innings with an unusual but competitive score of 195-11 from their 40 overs
The 1’s were happy with their collective bowling performance. Jain the pick of the bowlers with 2-23 from 6. Chris Harvey, Willem van Mierlo and Usain Bolt all picked up 1 wicket each to add to the 5 between Gustafsson and Collignon. Waheed also finished with economical figures of 0-17 from 6 overs. Despite all this they new they would have to bat well to win the game.
Richard Finley opened aggressively scoring a fine 34 from just 30 balls well supported by Julian Molenaar (21) to record a superb opening partnership of 72 with barely 10 overs having been bowled.
Wickets then started to fall. Dan Enslin continued his superb debut by removing the above mentioned openers and Eric Fabery de Jonge (8) to finish with 3-33 from 6 overs. Maxwell Charlesworth (1-25 from 6 overs) snagged the wicket of Thomas Pasierowski and all of a sudden the 1’s found themselves 101-4 and in a precarious position. Luckily the experienced head of Willem van Mierlo was at the crease. Supported by the even more experienced head of Floris Kappelle and between them nudged a patient 50 partnership. The Legendary figure of Kapelle adding a classy 19 including a 3, which prompted a cry of “someone phone an ambulance” from the sidelines. The author, Chris Harvey (9) joined Van Mierlo to add a useful 27 partnership before he was given out lbw (where is Nick Goodchild when you need him?) his wicket taker Capel (1-25 from 2.5 overs) in bullish delight started shouting “Ja! wegwezen! wegwezen!” which, if my Dutch is correct means “well played batsman!” Thank you for those kinds words sir.
By this point the 1’s were well on their way to victory. Bob Prenen picked up the wicket of Ernst van Rapphorst (1) to finish with excellent figures of 1-19 from 6 overs. Jelger Gustafsson (3 n.o.) came in to support man of the match van Mierlo who was now in full flow and it was he that finished the game in style with a superb 6 over square leg from a loopy Capel full toss to end 47 not out and secure the victory for the 1’s with 4 overs to spare.
Well done to both captains for making 14 a side work so well. We all look forward to the next clash. August 2019. Go well. Cheers.

Wanica 2 - VRA 4
Sameer, Shivjot, and Himanshu made merry even when there was no sunshine.
With the low par score of 153 to win on a football ground, VRA showed the batting prowess against the Wanica 2 stars. VRA 4 started the innings positively with the openers Giri and Himanshu. The Opener started off positively, however, his timbers were disturbed by the only ball which the bowler bowled well in the whole match. Sarjiel set the batsman very well, the first ball in the second was very good outswinger and the next ball was a good inswinger which left the batsman clueless. The man with the mission Shivjot came and eased the pressured on the other end. Himanshu was settling down at one end and Shivjot unsettled the bowlers on the other end. If Sachin had invented paddle sweep, Shivjot mastered it and he had the audacity to play them against the medium pacers. The balls were happy to reach the boundaries and taking a dip in the nearby pool. The home team preparation came to fore, they had different types of equipment, devices to get the ball from the canals. Himanshu and Shivjot ensured there was no wicket lost and they carried a 100 run partnership before Shivjot was caught by a very elderly person in short midwicket. It was a soft dismissal at the end and it was a pity after making some 45 runs to have missed out a well-deserved half-century.
Himanshu and Ashutosh completed the formalities for VRA 4. Himanshu’s pull shot stood out prominently and he was very comfortable and had a very good style as well. He played all around the park and was truly unbeaten for his well-deserved 50+ . Ashutosh showed some power hitting and it was a threat to the nearby football games that were held. They weren’t sure which ball to look at as these were like medieval style canon balls flying from nowhere and attacking them.
Earlier in the game, Avnish won the toss and wisely put the opposition to bat. The bowlers were brilliant right from the word go! Mani and Vamsi bowled very well. The ground was small and Vamsi bowled beautiful outswingers. Even the edges were going boundaries. Mani was deadly with his inswingers and the batsman wanted to see off Mani and take the attack to other bowlers. However, the plan didn’t work at all, As Sagar and Preet made consistent inroads with the wickets. The catches were held few juggled but all were great effort the only threatening batsman from Wanica was Sarjiel and Preet took a brilliant catch off his own bowling. The intensity of the shot and they way Preet latched with aplomb was spectacular to watch.
Overall a great performance from VRA 4 and We strive to repeat this performance at all places.
VRA5 - Hilversum1
After a long wait we were ready to play the first game of the season. The game was an away game to hilversum who were on a high note after winning their first game last weekend against ACC.
After winning the toss VRA5 decide to bat and we got off to a quick start scoring 43 in the first 6 overs thanks to Hobby for smashing it to all parts of the ground. Unfortunately Hobby departed after a quickfire of 33 which brought Pavan to the crease. He along with Vivek put on a valuable century partnership and ensured the scoreboard kept ticking.Vivek departed after scoring a skilfull 43 with the score at 144/2 after 22 overs. Atul joined Pavan in the middle and immediately started attacking the bowlers showing no respect to any bowler smashing everything out of the park .The pair quickly brought up a century partnernship with both Pavan and Atul getting to their half centuries in the process.Atul was dismissed for a brilliant knock of 73 just in 40 balls. Pavan carried on from there and went on to bring up his century and was dismissed for a very well made 134. We get a total of 344/8 in 40 overs.It was a solid batting performance from our top order.
The second innings started again with a good opening spell Goutam with swinging the ball both ways making it difficult for the both the openers. Subha supported him well and removed Partha in his first over and Hilversum were 36/1 after 6 overs. Vishal was introduced into the attack and removed Magaon in his very first over thereby reducing HCC to 54/2 after 8 overs. This brought upon the introduction of spin but it did not work well and both the batsmen attacked the spinner and also the other bowlers to score runs quickly.They reached 191/2 after 20 overs. With just another 150 to get in 20 overs and looking at the size of the ground it almost seemed like 350 was not going to enough. Saurabh quickly turned to Pavan who already had a brilliant day in batting, bowled cleverly and provided the much needed breakthrough by removing both srikanth(95) and ISSA(68) in quick succession both falling to knuckle balls. With a need to increase the pressure Atul(with an injured back) bowled two brilliant overs going for jus 5 runs. The team was brilliant in the field with Vikram, Vivek and Niranjan deserve a special mention in supporting their bowlers.The pressure created by the tight overs and the good fielding helped Pavan and Shubha to run through the middle and lower order which led Hilversum were allout in 302 in 38 overs.Pavan finished with a briilliant spell of 60/6 and shubha with 56/3 in their 8 over spells. VRA won the game by 42 runs.
The Man of the match was Pavan for his allround performance by scoring a match defining century(134) and a match winning spell(60/6).

VRA Zami Tour 2018: Blagdon Hill CC
Jaarlijks vertrekt een VRA gezelschap naar Engeland voor de legendary ZAMI tour. De wedstrijdverslagen van de 2018 tour leest u de komende weken in de How's That. (Deel 4 van 7)
On Monday we travelled to the lovely ground of Blagdon Hill CC in Taunton. Upon arrival we were happy to see our opposition was keen to make a good day of it: they had called up friends and family who would continue to come during the day to watch, and an outside bar was ready to serve drinks. Maybe one or two too many, as Maarten Slagter who was reserve today can testify.
Captain Bob Prenen convinced the opposition we had to bat first, and Floris Kappelle and Mike Rier opened up. Unfortunately, both were dismissed for single figures, Floris bowled from left arm over and Mike caught at second slip. Nick Wories and Bart Schotte duly set about recovering the innings, adding 34 runs in 9 overs before Bart was out bowled for 12, and at 55/3 the innings could still have gone either way. But another good partnership developed between Nick and Berend Steenhof, as Nick especially started to loosen up, hitting the loose balls from the spinners for some big leg side boundaries. Berend eventually fell for 28 and Thomas Pasierowski came in with the score 106/4 after 23 overs. For the second game in succession Thomas, who injured his ankle badly two weeks before the Tour, batted with a runner. How he managed to do so without getting fined is beyond me. Must be his family ties with the fines master. In any event, the injury did not hamper his stroke play as he struck 67 of 50 balls with four sixes and eight fours. All the while Nick was steadily heading for a century until rudely interrupted, given LBW well onto the front foot and arguably also outside the line of off stump. But he had to go having made 89 of 91 balls with 12 fours and a six. A small mini collapse caused us to be bowled out in the last over, but 234 was a pretty good score in a 40-over game.
We enjoyed another terrific tea, and Maarten was still enjoying the bar. He was also busy chatting up some of the well-sized crowd. Mostly the female ones, but not discriminating in terms of age. No further comment there.
We set about defending 234 and captain Bob and Mike Rier opened the bowling. The start was decent enough and Bob got the first wicket, the batsman pulling straight down Mike’s throat at fine leg. But after that the scoring rate picked up with especially the other opener hitting some cracking shots all around the wicket. Eventually Mike broke the partnership getting the number three with Nick catching a skier at mid-off to leave the score 66/2 after 10 overs. Now Piotr Pasierowski and Andrew Pulver came into the attack. Andrew got the new batsman out LBW, but the opener was still scoring freely and looking ominous. But Piotr, who had perhaps made a smart move not to open the bowling so as to be able to bowl downhill, deceived the opener getting him to squeeze the ball in the air for Nick to take another catch. He departed having made 54 of 42 balls and with him went most of Blagdon Hill CC’s resistance. Piotr and Andrew continued to bowl well to finish with 4-33 of 8 overs and 2-18 of 6 respectively. Berend and Nigel finished off with a wicket each, Nigel nicely taking a caught and bowled chance and Nick finished up with three catches. The innings closed at 141 all out, although it had looked closer than the eventual winning margin when the opener was in. Afterwards we enjoyed a BBQ at the club as well as the bar of course where Maarten was still going strong, but how long he remained strong may well be followed up in the match report of tomorrow’s match.
In Memoriam Jan Nolen
Ook deze week is ons ontvallen lid en donateur Jan Nolen in de leeftijd van 91 jaar. Jan, advocaat van beroep, heeft zo’n beetje alle elftallen van VRA en de hockeyclub Amsterdam doorlopen. Hij was het eerste lid dat intekende op een voorstel van de penningmeester: betaal nu duizend gulden als donateur voor de rest van je leven. Hij vond dit een origineel idee en maakte het geld over. Prompt kreeg hij daarop het volgend seizoen de reminder of hij zijn contributie wilde betalen. Dat heet VRA humor. Tot twee jaar geleden was hij regelmatig met hond op het veld om naar het eerste elftal te kijken. Hij woonde vlak bij het veld en was zijn hele leven bevriend met de gehele familie Van Marken. Hij beschouwde ons erelid Hein van Marken als zijn broer. VRA wenst zijn vrouw Marja en kinderen Karen, Robert, Frank en Marko veel sterkte met dit verlies. Weer een trouwe supporter en hond langs de kant.
Frans Wouters (25 januari 1929 – 26 april 2019)
Frans Wouters was een aimabel mens die met zijn charme menigeen in zijn ban hield. Na de oorlog, toen Nederland weer opkrabbelde, was hij een van de VRA-ers die je als een zeer trouw clublid zou mogen betitelen. Hij speelde in alle elftallen behalve het eerste en deed daarin gedegen zijn werk. Hij overleed na een lang ziekbed in Portugal op de leeftijd van negentig jaar. Zeker de oudere leden zullen hem met genegenheid gedenken.
Uit de oude doos
Als in iets wijdere kring bekend wordt dat je alles wat met cricket te maken heeft verzamelt, glijdt er weleens iets door je brievenbus wat je verzameling onverwachts verrijkt. Dat overkwam me deze week. Het bleek een in een keurige hedendaagse enveloppe verpakte ansichtkaart, in april 1908 verstuurd in Johannesburg en geadresseerd aan ‘Master Willem Scholten, De Clercqstraat 76 Amsterdam’. Op de ommezijde staat een beeld van een cricketwedstrijd gespeeld op de Union Grounds in Johannesburg. De kaart is uitgegeven door de firma Epstein in Durban en bevat een actiescène die me wel even bezighield. Allereerst zijn daar de umpires. Ze zijn zo te zien gekleed in driedelig grijs en dragen een strohoed. Ze heersen over spelers die voor het grootste deel met hun handen in hun zijde staan. Slechts de wicketkeeper lijkt te bewegen. Ook zijn er toeschouwers - ik telde er drie - die het spektakel geïnteresseerd gadeslaan. Het geheel speelt zich af op een glooiend veld dat een treffende gelijkenis vertoont met de Kalahari Woestijn. De vraag wie deze kaart verstuurd heeft wordt onder de afbeelding beantwoord.
