Voorwoord

Bijna een kwart eeuw geleden maakte ik me op een grijze zaterdagavond op voor de eerste uitwedstrijd die ik van mijn toenmalige club, de Kon. UD, zou gaan aanschouwen. De reis zou me over de A1 voeren naar Amstelveen, waar de Deventenaren zouden aantreden tegen ACC. Het weerbericht liet nog hoop. Weliswaar werden er een paar buien verwacht, maar er zou af en toe ook een stukje blauw te bewonderen zijn. Dat blauw was op zondagmorgen in geen velden of wegen te bekennen. Een loodgrijze lucht deed me aarzelen of ik de reis naar het westen wel moest ondernemen, maar uiteindelijk ging ik toch. Op de Veluwe hoosde het zo dat mijn ruitenwissers bijna geen soelaas boden en rond Hilversum was er sprake van een ware zondvloed. Toen ik tenslotte in Amstelveen aankwam zag ik louter bedrukte gezichten. ‘Dat wordt vandaag geen cricket,’ zeiden ze. ‘Laat alle hoop maar varen.’ Als noviet in de cricketwereld zag ik het minder somber in. Had het weerbericht niet gesproken van af en toe een stukje blauw, nou dan. Maar naarmate de middag verstreek werd steeds duidelijker dat ik mijn eerste uitwedstrijd uitsluitend in mijn verbeelding zou moeten beleven. Op weg naar huis was ik diep teleurgesteld. Dat de weergoden me toch zo bij de neus hadden gehad.

Aan deze eerste ervaring moest ik denken toen ik afgelopen zondag vanuit mijn huidige woonplaats Den Haag naar Amstelveen reed om daar de uitwedstrijd van VRA tegen ACC te gaan bewonderen. Op de Van Alkemadelaan, de toegangsweg naar Scheveningen, stond het verkeer muurvast. Terwijl ik lustig de andere kant op reed, zag ik menig echtelijke twist in wording, mede veroorzaakt door klierende kinderen op de achterbank.

Vandaag hoefde ik niet, zoals een kwart eeuw geleden, bang te zijn dat de regengoden roet in het eten zouden gooien, want het was ‘a scorcher’, die de spelers naar adem zou doen happen. Bij aankomst op het veld bleek me dat VRA een geruststellende 259 runs had gescoord, vooral door toedoen van Marcus Andrew die er duidelijk blijk van had geven dat hij lopen in deze hitte maar niets vond. Zijn 52 in 19 ballen sprak wat dit betreft boekdelen. In de VRA-aanval was het daarna bij ontstentenis van Peter wat improviseren, maar gelukkig hadden we de piepjonge Luc Hartsink die drie wickets nam. Omdat ook Quirijn en Leon hun werk naar behoren deden werd het de vijfde overwinning van het seizoen. En dit met een jeugdig team, waarin duidelijk vel potentie zit. Aanstaande zondag volgt de match tegen het sterke VCC. Ik gok op weer een overwinning, maar ook als die er niet komt, blijf ik veel vertrouwen houden in onze jongens. Om met Floris te spreken: ‘HUP VRA!”

Albert Park, Oval Durban

Het is dezer dagen nogal warm. Misschien niet, als U dit leest, maar wel wanneer ik dit schrijf. Zeer warm.
Ruim 100 jaar geleden, in Durban, was het wellicht ook warm op de dag van onderstaande foto. Warm met wolkjes.

De fotograaf interesseerde zich primair voor de kinderen. Hij maakte in feite een dubbelportret met een cricketveld als decor. Een studio-opname in de open lucht. De kindertjes poseren braaf en stil en schattig. De dame ( Moeder? Nanny? ) op de bank naast de kinderwagen, met een enorme bloemen- dan wel fruitmand op het hoofd, houdt zich afzijdig. Er valt een heer ( Vader? Opa? ) in pak waar te nemen. Hij loopt dwars door het veld in de richting van het paviljoen. Is het soms lunch? Of thee? En wat spoken die cricketers met z’n allen uit rond de pitch? Eentje is er zelfs bij gaan liggen. Ter hoogte van de tribune loopt er ook nog een. Is ie uit? Retired hurt? Er loopt iemand naast hem. Een dokter? De voorzitter?

Mysterieus allemaal. De kindertjes kijken al ruim een eeuw vol verwachting deze kant op. Zoveel vragen en geen antwoord. Daar zullen we het dit keer dan maar bij laten. Want het zij nogmaals gezegd: het is erg warm.

Ingezonden brief Wedstrijdverslagen

WEDSTRIJDVERSLAGEN

Tot mijn spijt zie ik in ons clubblad nauwelijks meer verslagen van de gespeelde wedstrijden, hoewel het aan de Corona aangepaste wedstrijdprogramma inmiddels op alle niveaus volop draait. Dat is vooral jammer voor de vele (oud-)leden die niet meer zo vaak op de club komen, maar het lijkt me toch ook dat voor de actief spelende leden interessant om te kunnen lezen hoe het de andere teams is vergaan.

Een korte terugblik hoe het vroeger ging : ik ben al vanaf ongeveer mijn 6e jaar (inmiddels ben ik 71) lid van VRA en als jonge spelertjes fietsten wij op maandagavond, veelal vanuit Amsterdam, naar het toenmalige clubhuis (waar nu de GILO kantoor houdt, als ik me niet vergis) om onze verslagen van de jeugdwedstrijden in te leveren. Die werden vervolgens op stencil gezet (getypt), waarmee de toenmalige How's That werd gemaakt. Ook toen we senioren cricket gingen spelen, werden de verslagen op die manier maandagavond ingeleverd en verwerkt. Hoe veel makkelijker is dat tegenwoordig, nu alles online vanaf laptop/smart phone kan worden gemaild. Uit dat oogpunt is er dus geen enkel redelijk argument aan te voeren waarom er geen verslag zou worden gemaakt van alle gespeelde wedstrijden.

Als oud-secretaris/oud-captain van VRA 1 en oud-club notaris en nog altijd als juridisch adviseur van de club, doe ik dan ook een dringend beroep op alle captains/senior- en juniorleden en leiders van alle jeugdelftallen om de goede traditie in ere te herstellen dat er van alle gespeelde wedstrijden een aardig verslag(je) voor de How's That wordt gemaakt. Dat kan heel eenvoudig worden gerealiseerd door voorafgaand aan de wedstrijd iemand aan te wijzen die het verslag moet maken. Ik adviseer ook nog om in de verslagen niet alleen de voornamen van de spelers te vermelden, maar ook hun achternamen. Niet alle lezers kennen iedereen bij voornaam... Tot slot : de club beschikt over bijna het volledige bestand van alle jaargangen van ons mooie clubblad. Voor de geschiedschrijving van de club zijn de wedstrijdverslagen onontbeerlijk.

De oude vetopvangput wordt verwijderd door lokale helden. Komt er een nu een Airfryer? dat lijkt mij de redacties om over te stemmen op een ALV.

Wouter Renardel heft de trofee namens VRA Halfway. Nu nog even de veld posities leren en leren cricketten en dan kan het aanvoeren van een zaterdagploeg nooit meer ver zijn.

VRA legends and King Henry VIII together to watch VRA I victorious once again at ACC. Rob Claes vond dat de druk op de tap wat hoger mocht op ACC. Zo was hij het op Bonaire niet gewend.

Kampong ZAMI I - VRA ZAMI I

VRA Zami 1 make it 5 wins from 5 matches

On what was to be a pretty hot day Zami 1 travelled to Kampong for our 5th league match. Having won our first four matches we were looking to maintain our perfect record on a quite greenish Kampong wicket. The day’s opposition was a rather mixed bunch of old zami friends and quite a few new faces, including two lady cricketers that brought their total to 13 players. Since we brought 13 players ourselves, captain Louis quickly agreed on a 13-a-side match, with all 13 batting and 11 fielding. After losing the toss, we were put in the field, where Kampong got off to a pretty good start. Kampong where in a really good position at 95 for 2 after 18 overs and looked well set to set a big total. With captain Louis deciding to take pace off the ball - and thus introducing both Willem and himself, things started to change. With the run rate slowing down, wickets began to fall. At 111 for 5 after 22 things started to look up, but crucially their opener who hadn’t offered up any chances and was well set, was still there. That’s when Berend produced a bit of magic and surely the play of the day. Firing in from about 40 meters out, he managed to hit the stumps directly to run out their opener, who was coming back for a risky second. With their set batsmen gone, the Kampong innings imploded and Ewoud took center stage. Taking the last 6 wickets for 16 runs of 6.2 overs he managed to not only notch up career best figures but also contain Kampong to a well under par 154 all out.

Whereas the Kamping batting innings started great and imploded towards the end, ours was quite the opposite. With only one of our top 6 managing double figures we found ourselves at 81 for 5 after 18 or effectively 6 as Richard was retired hurt with an injured calf. From that point onwards first Andrew Pulver provided some much needed aggression with a couple of hard hit boundaries, before Willem and Prasuk took over. With both guys scoring freely the total raced from 81 for 5 after 18 to 150 for 6 after 25 with Willem eventually falling for a well made 23 of 25 balls and 5 shy of the target. It was Prasuk who scored the final runs to end with 42 not out of 45 balls and seal a quite comfortable win for zami 1.

Specials mentions therefore for Ewoud’s 6 for 16 of 6.2, Berend’s magical direct hit run-out, Prasuk’s topscoring innings of 42 not out and Willem’s allround performance as well as for Kampong for hosting a lovely turf wicket, great lunch and playing the match in the best spirit possible. All in all a great day out and another step on zami 1’s way to a perfect (league)season.

VRA ZAMI II - HCC ZAMI I

Helaas lukte het de dappere strijders van Zami 2 niet om de winning streak vol te houden. De ‘uitwedstrijd’ tegen HCC werd op het hoofdveld van VRA gespeeld. Met de keuze tussen het tweede veld op HCC en het eerste veld op VRA was natuurlijk snel gemaakt. 30+ graden op de dag, en helaas geen graswicket vanwege de Pro Series volgende week, wist de captain dat eerst batten de enige optie was. Toss gewonnen dus wij aan de slag.

Na een vlot begin van Thomas en Arsal, moet Thomas na 6 over door een vang op point van het veld, waarna invaller Sud in kwam en het leven van de HCC’s zuur maakte. Met een mooie 80 run partnership moest Arsal met 45 runs het veld ruimen. Daarna deden de inkomende batsman hun werk om de runrate omhoog te brengen en te zorgen dat we op een goed totaal uit zouden komen. Sud bleef tot de 30e over instaan en werd gevangen op 62. Daarna was het Divan die nog met een snelle 22 het totaal tot 176 voor 8 kon tillen.

We voelde dat de 176 op het razendsnelle hoofdveld wat aan de lage kant was, dus besloten we om met onze strike bowlers te beginnen om wat snelle wickets te forceren. Twee wickets, door twee geweldige slipvangen van Sud, in de eerste tien overs leek ons een groot voordeel te geven. Maar helaas graafden de twee HCC batsman, Tops en Ali zich en met hulp van vele wides kwam HCC in de dertigste over voorbij ons totaal.

Ondanks de vele toeschouwers van onder andere Menno niet het gewenste resultaat, wel veel gezelligheid. Volgende week Ajax uit, die moet weer gewonnen worden.

Man of the match: Sud Sharma met 62 runs, twee vangen en 1 wicket voor 19 runs in 4 overs.

Hier een foto van Wouter incluis Schoonzuster tijdens de wedstrijd. Hij maakte maar 6 schamele runs. Met wollen pet was hij te warm gekleed, aldus schoonzuster. De uitdrukking 'Fashion before functionality' zegt haar blijkbaar niets.

Eindhoven- VRA 4 match report

We travelled to Eindhoven on one of the hottest day of the year for our 5th match.Away team won the toss and elected to bat first.
Vivek and Sourab started the bowling attack and their batsman played with caution.Hobby decided to bring Rakesh to the attack after 4 overs and soon he got his first scalp. In the next over Vivek also got the wicket with peach of a delivery and finished his first spell with 3 maidens ( 5-3-8-1). When we thought we were in control they got a big partnership. It was difficult for our bowlers as the temperature and heat was going up and both batsman were scoring on the loose deliveries.

Rakesh came back to the attack and bowled his heart out with the great inswingers and brought us back in the game by picking 2 wickets. Niranjan also backed him well with good line and length. But their lower order got some useful 20-30 runs extra in the last overs and they finished at 209 in 40 overs.

We knew it will be tricky target because of heat in the south Holland (38 degree )and playing with 2 batsman short in this match but we were confident of chasing it. Worth mentioning about the game is no water was provided by the host and we had to go to supermarket to buy drinks in the break. Thankfully we were carrying our own lunch.

Vivek and Parag opened the batting but We lost Parag on his very first ball which kept low.
Hobby came to the crease and started to play his natural attacking game and runs started to flow but we lost hobby in the process. On the very next ball Atul also caught out while trying to go big on his first ball , it was big blow to us.

Sourab joined Vivek in the middle and both decided to build a partnership.He looked in good nick but got perished at the crucial part of the game. Wickets were tumbling like a pack of cards. We were 55-6. Vivek was still at the crease and was hoping for two good partnership with the lower order to take the match as deep as possible. Niranjan and Saneel played well and tried their best but we lost last 3 wickets quickly and got all out 155 in 35 overs. Vivek carried his bat with 57* not out.

VRA I ACC I

Match report VRA vs ACC

It was yet another warm and sunny Sunday morning, again a lovely day for a game of cricket. The team had gotten back to winning ways after beating VOC at home the previous. This week we were all fired up and prepared for the all important Amsterdam derby of VRA vs ACC. Trying to showcase that we could come out on top for the second time this season after the T20 win as the derby winners. With Pete still out due to the split webbing and several stitches, Vikram went out for the toss, won it and chose to bat first for the second time in as many games. With things going our way already we were going into our batting innings feeling good.

Vikram and Shirase were out in the middle to start us off again, and once again they gave us a positive start with Shirase playing the aggressor and Vikram the anchor. After a couple of lovely drives from shirase through the covers along with some strike rotation we were 30-0 after 11 overs. With a solid base put in place by a solid opening pair, they decided to accelerate the scoring rate as we were in control of the game. This led to our score being 72-0 after 19 overs at the drinks break. But as we have heard in many instances a break in play could lead to a loss of concentration and unfortunately that seemed to happen to Shirase who was cruising along on 38 until he played down the wrong line off a medium pacer and lost his off stump. This brought out our X-factor out into the middle to join Vikram in his 30s, Marcus may have been a mystery to the opposing team but we knew full well of his capabilities. Trust me when I say he did not disappoint, it was one of the most destructive innings I had seen live in my relatively short career. He was greeted with a no ball full toss which he smashed for 6. On the freehit next ball he deposited the ball over the long on boundary for another 6, after which he hit two lovely 4s through point and extra cover. He reached 20 in just 4 balls leaving us in awe and the ACC players with their hands on their heads. By the 24th over we were 117-1 as Marcus continued to smash the ball all around the ACC ground, he was on 37 of 12 balls overtaking Vikram who was on 32, who was content with just admiring the ‘bombs.’ Our score had doubled in the last 7 overs primarily due to a Marcus Andrew masterclass in which he made his maiden 50 in just 19 balls. However, on the score of 52 Marcus was caught which brought out Ben to the crease. The innings from Marcus had inspired Vikram as he too started playing his shots more freely, which also led to his demise as he got caught after a mistimed shot for a well played 48. The next passage of play saw us losing some of our momentum as Debrup was caught at cover first ball and a few overs later Ben was given LBW, a very surprising verdict by the umpire as the appeal was one with more hope than conviction. All of a sudden the score was 169-5 in 32 overs and we were in a pickle. An in-form Mitch came in to join Leon to consolidate. Though, this consolidation period doesn’t last long as Leon doesn't last for too long. This brought out Quirijn to joining Mitch, with a majority of our hopes of a high score resting on their shoulders. But once they were out there, they embraced the pressure with open arms, they displayed a splendid variety of attacking and responsible batting. The consolidating partnership ended as Quirijn was trapped in front for an important 41. With Mitch still out there batting we were expecting a big finish and the rest of the batters providing the support. Mitch kept the aggression going but the supporting batters found it difficult as Udit and Ashir both didn’t last very long. With Luke still unable to bat we finished on a very respectable 259 after 49 overs with Mitch remaining unbeaten for a reliable 40. After the lunch break we were preparing ourselves for a bowling innings which was bound to challenge us with the home team going into bat and the heat continually rising. Opening the bowling we had our vice captain Quirijn who was releasing some rockets and bowling a perfect first class line and length as he repeatedly troubled the batsman. Ashir had the new ball from the other end. With Quirijn leaving the batsman shaking in their boots most of their runs to begin with were behind the wicket as they mainly came from edges. Nevertheless, edges or not they were scoring at a good rate with no wickets lost. This inspired captain Vikram to bring out the X-factor Marcus into the attack, and needless to say on his very first ball he removed one of their openers who was causing problems. This meant the score was 52-1 after 10 overs. Not too long after spin is introduced from both ends as Leon and Luke are drafted to bowl in tandem. With spin came more wickets as the ever consistent Luke sent their other opener back, soon after Leon also chipped in with an important wicket. It felt like these two spinners were trying to get the job done all alone as soon after Luke picked up another 2 wickets, finishing with yet another impressive performance of 3-32 in 7 overs .

At this stage ACC were 124-5 after 28 overs and we were starting to taste victory. This may have been a problem as we started to see a partnership forming between batsman no. 6 and 7. Maybe it was the heat, maybe it was our concentration or maybe it was both but as ACC started to chip towards the target our fielding became sloppier and heads started to drop. We needed something new to give us the edge once again. Vikram did just that by bringing Ben on to bowl who bowled superbly not only to remove one of their set batsman for 47 but to also remove their other set batsman later for 41, by the end Ben finished with a match deciding 3-31 after 6 overs. In search of the victory the dependable Quirijn came back into the attack soon removing their last recognised batsman at no. 8. With only a couple more wickets to secore what we deserved, we applied the last bit of pressure and soon enough we finished the game off with ACC ending on 229 all out after 47.5 overs.

Yet another entertaining win for the VRA fluffers, we had to celebrate with our team song in order to declare ourselves winners of the Amsterdam derby. We take on a strong VCC side at home next Sunday and would love all the support we can get. It promises to be a thrilling encounter especially considering Peter is back again and excited to get going once more, Ben reaching his first century of the season in a recent pro-series game, no pressure Ben.
