How's That verschijnt tijdens het cricketseizoen wekelijks
Voorwoord
Ik moest de afgelopen dagen vaak denken aan Inspector Alan Grant, hoofdpersoon in een aantal heerlijk ouderwetse en zeer Engelse detectiveromans van Josephine Tey, een van de grandes dames van dat genre. In haar meesterwerk The daughter of time (1951) is Grant door een gebroken been aan zijn bed gekluisterd en om de verveling die om de hoek loert te bestrijden wijdt hij zich aan het oplossen van een moord uit de vijftiende eeuw. Omdat hij zelf niet allerlei bronnen kan raadplegen, het is nog heel ver voor het internettijdperk, doen vrienden dat voor hem en zo komt hij tot een oplossing van een raadsel dat historici al eeuwen bezighield. Afgelopen week was ook ik aan mijn bed gekluisterd. Een venijnige griep had hard toegeslagen, zodat ik niet, zoals gewoonlijk, aanwezig kon zijn bij de wedstrijden van mijn favorieten tegen Excelsior en Dosti. Maar ook ik had hulpjes, de reporters van tk.cricket. Die hoefden geen bibliotheken of archieven te raadplegen, zoals de vrienden van Alan Grant, maar dienden alleen maar verslag te doen van de wedstrijden op de vaderlandse velden. Als ik enigszins bij mijn positieven was geweest had ik hun opmerkingen gretig ingedronken maar donderdagmiddag ging heen in een koortsroes, zodat ik pas ver na zessen vernam dat VRA het tegen Excelsior niet had gered. Een nederlaag met maar zes runs, heel zuur.
Tegen Dosti was ik weer aardig bij de pinken. Met de kussens in mijn rug maakte ik me op voor een vrolijke middag. De Amsterdammers stonden immers stijf onderaan. Dat varkentje zouden de VRA-ers wel even wassen. Toch was het even schrikken toen Dosti 218 runs op het bord bracht. Geen onoverkomelijk totaal, maar toch! Mijn lichte vrees bleek ongegrond. Vikram sneuvelde weliswaar snel, maar door deze tegenslag liet gelegenheidsopener Peter zich niet van de wijs brengen. Hij snelde uit de startblokken en legde zo een stevig fundament waarop de anderen konden voortbouwen. 219 voor 5 na nog geen veertig overs. Het was al met al een eitje. Helemaal gesterkt door deze overwinning sprong ik mijn bed uit een gezond leven tegemoet. Volgende keer ben ik er weer bij. Reken maar.

Finest hour - Topcricket op vernieuwd VRA complex
Voor alle VRA-ers markeerde de eerste ODI van Nederland tegen de WestIndies op 31 mei 2022 de start van een nieuwe periode in onze roemruchte clubgeschiedenis. Alle nieuwe faciliteiten op het VRA complex (indoorhal, KNCB kantoorruimte, nieuwe long room, nieuwe keukens, nieuwe grote kleedkamer, fysioruimte, werkplaats en opslag, nieuw terras, nieuwe netten oefensquare) zijn nu volledig in gebruik genomen en onder leiding van Cricket Nederland werd een tijdelijk cricketstadion met een capaciteit van 7000 bezoekers neergezet voor de ODI's tegen WestIndies (31 mei, 2 juni, 4 juni) en Engeland (17 juni, 19 juni, 22 juni).

VRA 3 comes back with an amazing win !!
On a cloudy and a drizzly morning VRA 3 decided to bowl first after winning the toss against Quivive 3. The conditions were perfect for bowling and VRA 3 had a good start with Shayan(U17) and Vivek( V Kumar) starting well from both the ends. Shayan’s pace and Vivek’s accurate line and length was not helping the batsman of Quivive to score freely. One of the openers looked to play big shots right from the start and used Shayans pace to connect a few. Vivek removed the top order batsmen with a score of 29/2 on board. The next pair looked steady and tried to just play for singles and to punish all the bad balls , both were looking steady and the scoreboard kept ticking slowly but steadily. After a good partnership of 66 runs, Jagran( J Pandey) bowled Arun with a good inswinger. Then with spin introduced at both ends, Adeel(A Raja) and Goutam(G Nayak) were able to slow the run rate to a great effect and share 3 wickets between them . But the anticlimax happened in the last 5 overs of the first innings when Sundar(S GOMA) trying to make quick runs for Quivive in the last 5 overs, connected a few clean shots and quickly scored a lot of runs in the last 5 overs. Quivive fetched a good score of 225 on board. Shayan, future of VRA was not only appreciated by our team members but the opposition was also impressed with his pace and bounce.
With a target of 226 to chase, VRA 3 started with a good balanced approach. Hobby(H Randhawa) opened the innings and started to punish the bad ball right from the word go. Vivek on the other hand looked composed and started slow reading through the bowling attack. Trying to score quick runs to maintain the run rate VRA lost the first two wickets Hobby and Saurabh(S Manroy) quickly with a score of 41 on board. Then with Deb(D BHATTACHARYA) and Vivek on crease VRA looked settled as this pair ensured that they don’t loose any more wickets quickly and also ensured the required run rate is not out of hands with a steady 58 runs partnership before Vivek was caught trying to hit a big shot. After losing Atul(A Rana) quickly also in the process , came Nipun (N Narang) to the batting crease and the rest what everyone saw was a super partnership of 110 runs in 87 balls between Nipun and Deb which was a treat to watch. Without taking any big risks and going for slogs, this pair was able to steadily score runs like a walk in the park. The temperament looked solid of both the batsmen and they got VRA to win the match in 37.5 overs with 5 wickets remaining. This partnership for Deb and Nipun is worth remembering.

VRA 4 vs Wanica
VRA arrived at their home ground to play Wanica, looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss against Bloemendal. Hamdan won the toss and decided to bat first on a good wicket, it proved to be a good decision as he dominated with the bat on his way to 103 off 77 balls before getting caught. He was well supported by Saranga who made 15 before getting bowled. Next in was Kabir and he wasted no time in picking up the run rate, storming to 43 of just 27 balls ensuring a very handy total of 258 for VRA.
Wanica had a big total to chase and never really got any momentum going with tight bowling from Samba and Sandeep causing them to lose their head and eventually fall for a total of just 84. They did offer some resistance in the middle order but that didn’t last long. Saranga and Martijn were also good with the ball picking up two wickets each. A special mention has to go to the fielding display put on by VRA as they were prowling the ground cutting off singles and taking all their catches.
VRA won by 174 runs.

VRA Zami 3 vs Rood en WIt
Since the author of our previous match report made a marvelous effort on changing the structure, the ZAMI 3 committee has agreed to continue his form.
Previous Saturday, the 3’s played against the mighty men of Rood en Wit with plenty of experience (as almost all players have played at Topklasse level back in the days). An important game to win, since it is some of our team member’s old stomping ground.
In order to win, our goal was to keep Rood en Wit under a total of 200.
With a line-up stacked with bowlers, we won the toss and elected to bowl first. Starting off with Saranga and Alec opening the bowling.
BOWLING
Saranga: Without having bowled a single ball during our pre-planned and well organized warm-up, Lasagna managed to pick up two wickets in his first over by producing two absolute beauties of out-swingers (with the last delivery swinging out and nipping back in off the seam).

Alec: Had a proper drinking session the night before with his colleagues from Joe & the Juice which hit him hard the following afternoon. While struggling a bit to find his line & length in his first spell, he returned in his second spell and contributed majorly by wrapping up the tail.

Bob: Complained a bit that he got hurt during the previous game, After having a little chat with the skip, he decided to give it go. Not too bad. A couple of loose ones during his second spell and some ugly hoiks by the opposition got him not very economical numbers, but an important wicket late in the innings.

Capel: Very stiff from the hard labor that he had to fulfill for his VRA duties. Therefore he was able to bowl only one over.

Nick: Came on with a clear goal of breaking the partnership between their number 2 and 4. And he did. After a partnership of 115 runs, he managed to slide one through. After continuously putting pressure on the batsman he produced a beauty that spun, bounced and was gloved by the batsman to the keeper.

Ben: Produced a couple of good deliveries, one leggie (amazing) and got a wicket. However, was way more successful with the bat!

A great effort in the field by our 3’s with hardly any extras and only 3 missed catches, Rood en Wit managed to score 210 runs (which was on par with our goal).
BATTING
Father of a new-born Patty and sobering-up Nigel opened the batting.
Nigel: Looked promising in the first over by smashing one six and one four. Although he wasn’t able to keep his form and was bowled a couple of balls after.

Patty: Got us off to a solid start, by being positive and kept looking for runs. While hitting some proper shots that went for four, he started to form a partnership with Arpit, before chopping an unexpected bouncer on to his stumps.

Arpit: ZAMI debutant who was determined to show his talent to his fellow teammates. And he did. After building some partnerships with Patty, Cam and Mats, he unfortunately fell just 60 runs short of winning the game for us (which he desperately wanted to do). Thanks for joining our squad, Arpit. We really enjoyed plenty of the great strokes you played!

Benjamin: Came in and made his purpose very clear: we weren't going to bat out the full 35 overs. From the get go, we witnessed some very clean power-hitting that took us home in the 31st over (after playing just 11 strokes). Great job Ben!

Cricket on Quarter Deck
Waar werd en wordt er geen cricket gespeeld? Meer dan een waagstuk om op die vraag een concreet antwoord te geven.
Dat gaan we in dit kader dan ook niet proberen.
Minstens zo lastig, maar veel leuker is het om na te gaan waar er wèl gespeeld is. Met name als het gaat om onmogelijk geachte dan wel onvoorstelbare of ronduit krankzinnig te noemen locaties.
Wie een online-kijkje neemt op de site ‘Sportskeed’ bevindt zich stante pede in spook- dan wel sprookjesachtige cricketsferen. Een wedstrijd in een krater bij de Kilimanjaro op het dak van Zuid-Afrika of een stijlvolle forward defense op de bodem van de rivier de Derwent in het Lake District. Gewoon met een rode bal en de wicketkeeper zonder helm, maar wel met snorkel.
En wat dacht U van de in 2005 opgerichte Dutch Fellowship of Fairly Odd Places C.C? Zij speelden in 2008 tegen Vaticaanstad ( lees: een team van jeugdige Indiase seminariestudenten) in het pompeuze Stadio dei Marmi in Rome.
Ook niet alledaags te noemen zijn onderstaande cricketverrichtingen.

VRA staat ingeschreven als te steunen vereniging bij de Vriendenloterij. Dit betekent dat u in plaats van door de Vriendenloterij gekozen goede doelen, VRA kunt steunen met uw gekochte loten.
Hoe werkt dat?
De Vriendenloterij kent 40% van de aankoopprijs van elk lot toe aan VRA. Dit is 85 euro per jaar per lot. De aankoopprijs per lot verandert niet door VRA te steunen. Dit is dezelfde prijs als bij het steunen van de eerder genoemde goede doelen.
