Voorwoord

118, het werd tijdens de VRA-innings afgelopen zaterdag tegen VCC plotseling een magisch getal. Dat kwam zo. VCC had mede door sloppy VRA-fielden 231 op het bord gebracht. Dat leek veel maar niet onhaalbaar. De twee, later drie, VRA-supporters zagen het wel zitten. We hadden immers een ijzersterke batting-side die dit seizoen al meermalen de 250 runs had aangetikt. Vikram en zijn kompanen zouden dit varkentje wel even wassen. Een van de twee, later drie, VRA-aanhangers begaf zich naar binnen om tosti’s en ice tea’s te bestellen. Daardoor miste hij een deel van een totale batting-collaps van zijn favorieten. Vikrams ene run zette de toon, doch niet alleen hij maar de hele toporder liet het afweten, zodat we vier wickets kwijt waren voor een luttel aantal runs. De 118 runs die nodig waren om op gemiddelde te overleven leken plotseling heel erg ver. De inmiddels drie VRA-supporters zweetten peentjes. Zouden we op de valreep toch nog veroordeeld worden tot de degradatiepoule? Dat het zover niet kwam was de danken aan Nashir en Pete die een korte, maar geslaagde, tussensprint inzetten. De 118 werd, heel karakteristiek, bereikt met een wide, waarna Mitch nog voor enig vuurwerk zorgde door een Blitz van 36 runs in 25 ballen. 159 all out. De VRA-clan zuchtte eens diep na zoveel emoties. Het was me het middagje wel geweest.

Later op de dag won Excelsior van VOC wat betekent dat VRA in de top-poule met nul punten van start gaat. Van alle mede ‘koplopers’ werd verloren, een resultaat dat te denken geeft. Maar goed, een schone lei heeft ook wel wat. Ik hoop wel dat in de tweede seizoenshelft meer VRA-ers hun club komen aanmoedigen. De geringe opkomst bij VCC is helaas geen uitzondering. Dat moet beter, veel beter.

VRA Zami 1 vs Ajax: a Captainn's innings?

Saturday 11th of June 2022: a home game against Ajax Leiden and played at Ajax because of some grand stands getting in our way of playing a game at our 1st pitch... Or is it because of the Netherlands taking up England with another great opportunity for a setup? Anyway Ajax was generous enough and able to host us at their home ground: a complete artificial pitch... On a beautiful day. We had twelve team mates including 2 younsters. All ingredients were present to have a ball..

Captainn won the toss and decided to bat first. With a strong 12 we had to be able to pile up some runs... Openers Prasun Banerjee and Julian Molenaar had the task to get the shine of the ball and it worked... for about 11 balls when Prasuns wicket fell LBW for one run. No harm done: our youngster Muhamed Taha should be able to get to about 4 an over in the first ten overs with Julian... Unfortunately also this expectation was limited to 3 runs for Taha being bowled. Next plan: in went the Captainn, trying to put up a partnership with Julian. I did work for a mere 17 runs. So there we were: 7 overs 28 runs and 3 wickets. Next plan and next bat Michael Bryant, Big Mike. Yet to stage another partnership and trying to get the batting innings going. Suddenly something came together: focused, head to the ball and eyes on the ball: nn and Mike got going. Mike even blocking balls, sometimes hitting a big 6 and formost talking, coaching and supporting nn to get as many runs as possible, resulting in a great partnership of 90 runs in about 15 overs before Mike was bowled at 29 runs, getting our total to 118. Not enough yet. But we had some cracks in bag still of which good old Floris Kappelle was the next batsman to join nn. Fully recovered from a worn hip, Flo was bound to sprint and jump all around the pitch: welcome back Flo! And a job had to be done: we had to lift our score... And we did, climbing up to 147 runs after 26 overs as nn was bowled for 83 runs. Then we witnessed our second collapse: Joost Dekkers bowled for 1 run, Johnny McGinley run out for Duck, Flo stumped for 8 runs (or was it retired out: we will never know), Keshav Narula caught behind for 4 runs, Theo Lindemann caught for Duck and Amaan Raja was not out. Our total: 160 runs and helas well below par.

After a well delicious lunch of knakworst and hard boiled eggs with rolls and lots of peppers, we took the field to test the Ajax side with some decent bowling and a 160 runs on the board. Michael Bryant opened the bowling with Keshav Narula. Quite strict and tidy we managed to get our first scalp off the bowling of Michael Bryant with a screamer of a slip catch by Joost Dekkers in the 9th over. Keshav was relieved by Muhamed Taha, Michael Bryant by nn and Taha relieved by Amaan Raja and nn by Prasun and Amaan relieved by Taha and, despite excellent bowling of Mike Bryant, Keshav Narula and Amaan Raja, all these changes had no result in getting the wickets of Holleman (58 runs) en Verhaar (75 runs) of Ajax who batted very focussed and concentrated, resulting in a big win for Ajax: with some 7 overs to spare and 9 wickets in hand. So a Captainn's innings, though thoroughly enjoyed by nn was overwhelmed by the big loss in all...

After the match we hosted Ajax at their ground with lots of beer, chicken, chips, 0.0's, Kapelli Points and loads of gezelligheid hosted by Ajax (yes I know a twist it is). A lot of stories about todays game, cricket and the coming matches for the Netherlands against England: VRA is ready for it and really looking forward to hosting you all!

VRA Dames vs Kampong Dames

The day started off as a good start for the VRA ladies as everyone came on time to help set up the ground for the match. Including marking the boundaries, scooping poop as well as setting up the stumps and bails, the VRA ladies enthusiastically prepared for the match against Kampong. Though most of the poop was cleaned off of the pitch, players took caution while on the field as there were still some remains of poop left on some areas of the pitch. Regardless of that fact, the VRA ladies were greatly looking forward to the match as the weather conditions were perfect for a T-20 game.
VRA won the toss and chose to field first. With the target of getting Kampong all out within the first 15 overs, the VRA ladies stood positioned on the field as Gwen started the opening bowling attack. By the end of the first over, the first wicket of Kampong had already fallen. Continuing with the bowling attack, almost all of the bowlers got a wicket, giving each bowler a good bowling economy.

Due to the strong bowling attack as well as the motivation of players on the field, by the 15th over with two balls to spare, all of the ladies in Kampong had been dismissed through a variety of ways, including bowled, caught, hit wicket and a spectacular run out by Git and Gwen. The VRA ladies were able to meet their first target successfully.
At the end of the first innings, Kampong had made 48 runs, leaving the VRA ladies to chase 49 runs within 20 overs to win the game. 1st innings: Kampong - 48 runs in 14.4 overs. All out.
Much like the first innings of the game, a target was set for the second innings of the game. The target for the second innings was to chase 49 runs within the first 10 overs of the game. The batting pair to open the match was Gwen and Kanishka, with Gwen being absolutely fantastic on the batting ground, hitting boundaries that included three 4s and a 6!

Through a number of good partnerships and good communication between the batsman, the VRA ladies successfully achieved their second target with two balls to spare as Gwen finished off the game and her partnership with Isa with a beautiful 4.
At the end of the second innings, VRA had won the match by 7 wickets.
2nd innings: VRA - 52 runs in 9.4 overs. 7 wickets to spare.

Along with VRA's victory, the ladies also celebrated Katie's birthday and Gwen's success in finishing her exams, resulting in a very happy ending after the match. The golden turtle that was previously passed to Kanishka and then to Maartje, now rests with Angel. Overall it was a great game with amazing captaincy from Nathalie Hennis, who set clear targets that ensured an incredible victory for the VRA ladies against Kampong!

Our Local Express

In deze hectische en behekste tijden van beoogde warmtepompen, zonnepanelen, windparken, woningisolatie, CO2-opstootjes en vliegbeperkingen scoort de trein. Het imago van de NS is niet bepaald je dat, de dienstregeling wil de reiziger nog wel eens verrassen, maar de trein scoort. Want de trein is groen. In vervlogen tijden was alles natuurlijk nog veel groener dan nu. Behalve de trein, want die reed op gitzwarte kolen en braakte een hoeveelheid broeikasgassen uit waar de complete huidige veestapel in de Achterhoek jaloers op zou zijn. Maar de trein was modern en modern scoorde. Hoewel dat niet voor elke trein gold. Neem nou ‘The Flyer’, de vroeg 20e eeuwse sprinter van Canterbury naar Whitstable en (soms) andersom.

De ontwerper van deze satire was Martin Anderson ( 1854 – 1932 ) alias Cynicus, een Schotse kunstenaar, die aanvankelijk als illustrator voor diverse Schotse kranten werkte. Als freelancer tekende hij cartoons voor ‘The Quiz’, een Schotse imitatie van ‘Punch’. Zijn tekeningen werden gepubliceerd onder het pseudoniem ‘Bob’( Zie How’s That van 17 mei 2022: ‘Little Hollander’ ). Dit alias veranderde Anderson later in ‘Cynicus’, omdat hij naar eigen zeggen het accent in zijn werk wilde verleggen “…from the safe and trivial to the dangerous and powerfull realm of the politics…” Al te politiek is deze fraaie ansicht niet direct, maar de boodschap is duidelijk en er valt bijzonder veel te zien. De theepot op de locomotief, het vrouwtje voor de trein met haar cynische commentaar in woord en gebaar en het partijtje cricket van het spoorwegpersoneel onder het motto ‘tijd zat’ zijn vanzelfsprekend de aandachttrekkers. Maar er valt veel meer vermakelijks en venijnigs waar te nemen, zoals de machinist, die als een onwennige gondelier de trein vooruit tracht te bomen, de seinwachter, die ligt te snurken, de …kijkt u zelf maar. En dan zit er natuurlijk nog een keerzijde aan dit geheel. Voor de afzender, monsieur Pierre Beaux, vormde deze kaart op 8 september 1910 de aanleiding om in sierlijk handschrift een andere Beaux - Maurice uit Melun - over zijn treinavonturen te berichten. De Engelse teksten op de ansicht werden door Pierre middels elegante tekeningetjes vertaald. Ceci n’est pas un Thalys!

Hoe werkt dat?
De Vriendenloterij kent 40% van de aankoopprijs van elk lot toe aan VRA. Dit is 85 euro per jaar per lot. De aankoopprijs per lot verandert niet door VRA te steunen. Dit is dezelfde prijs als bij het steunen van de eerder genoemde goede doelen. Maak ik dan nog wel evenveel kans om te winnen? Ja zeker! Winst gaat via de Vriendenloterij per postcode en lotnummer niet per doel/vereniging dat gesteund wordt.
