VRA Zami Tour ‘West-Sussex 2023’
Slindon C.C. vs VRA: T20 Tour Opener
Date: 28th of August, 2023
Venue: Slindon C.C.
Background:
Located in the scenic village of Slindon in West Sussex, Slindon Cricket Club boasts a deep-rooted cricketing legacy from the early 18th century. It gained prominence in the 1740s, notably under the captaincy of Richard Newland. Sponsored by Sir Charles Lennox, the 2nd Duke of Richmond, the club's team challenged and bested many of England's top sides during its heyday. Today, while it might not command the same historical dominance, the club remains a beacon of grassroots cricket, set against the backdrop of the picturesque South Downs.
Toss & Conditions:
VRA won the toss and, given the light constraints, agreed to an unconventional yet strategic move of bowling 10 overs from one end followed by 10 from the other, for each innings. This to prevent any bowlers from bowling in the dark.
1st Innings - VRA's Battle with the Blade:
The VRA innings commenced with openers Bart Schotte and Jelger Gustafsson at the crease. However, an early mix-up in running resulted in Bart's unfortunate dismissal. Despite the setback, Jelger Gustafsson anchored one end, crafting a well-made 20. The middle order, with the combined efforts of Merlin Smethurt, Nick Wories, Thomas Pasierowski and Ewoud de Man, accumulated approximately 100 runs. While the exact contributions of each batsman remain uncertain due to a scoring mishap — perhaps a light-hearted case of the 'Dutch lookalike syndrome' — their collective effort was undeniably pivotal to setting up the innings. Berend Steenhof, showcasing his characteristic paddle shots, chipped in with some quick singles towards the tail end of the innings. The challenging pitch, riddled with tufts of grass and dirt, seemed more formidable than the Slindon bowlers at times. However, young leg-spinner, Josh Locke, made his mark, bamboozling Nick Wories with a delivery that sneaked around his legs, ending with figures of 1-18 from 4 overs. VRA concluded their innings setting a challenging target of 142 runs for Slindon.
2nd Innings - Slindon's Stutter and VRA's Domination:
In response, Slindon struggled to put together substantial partnerships. Their highest individual score was a modest 10. The highlight of the innings, and arguably the match, was an electrifying one-handed diving catch by Wouter Renardel in the gully. This catch, dubbed the catch of the tour, ignited VRA's fielding spirit. The Pulver family duo, father and son, showcased their mettle with the ball, stifling Slindon's batsmen, taking crucial wickets, and maintaining a tight leash on the run rate. Exact figures might be elusive due to the scorebook's state, but their impact was undeniable. Slindon's batting efforts culminated at a total of 102 runs.
Conclusion & Awards:
VRA began their UK tour on a high, besting Slindon CC by 40 runs. The "Player of the Match" accolade was deservedly awarded to Wouter Renardel, whose stellar catch symbolized the passion and zest with which VRA embarked on this tour.
As this opening game has showcased, fans and players can anticipate more riveting cricketing encounters, memorable moments, and deep camaraderie throughout the VRA Zami tour.
Ferring C.C. vs VRA: 40 over match

Billy Idol, Chris Braine, Merlin Smethurst, een bier festival, curry bij de Monsoon, sneuvelende records, deze zaterdag bracht het allemaal. En nog veel meer!
Een van de moeilijkste onderdelen van een Tour is het niveau van de tegenstander. Je weet eigenlijk nooit hoe goed de tegenstander is en zij weten al helemaal niet hoe goed dat clubje Hollanders zal zijn.
We kennen allemaal de verhalen van touring teams die aangezien werden voor hét Nederlands XItal en zich vervolgens vermorzeld zagen door de pro uit de West Indies. Maar de VRA Zamis on Tour laten zich niet zomaar vermorzelen. Sterker, we kunnen er zelf ook wel wat van!
En zo geschiedde tegen Ferring C.C. in de tweede pot van de Tour van West-Sussex 2023. Captain Bart Schotte deed allereerst wat er van hem verlangd werd, namelijk zorgen dat we eerst mochten batten. En toen konden we ons vergapen aan Tour debbies Merlin Smethurst en Chris Braine. Zij maakten namelijk allebei een knalharde century. Veel vieren en zessen leidden tot een partnership van 236. Daarmee verbraken zij het record van Ewoud de Man en Alex van Hirtum (170 tegen Bude CC) en wandelden uiteindelijk beide retired het veld af.
Merlin maakte er 105 van honderd ballen met 13x4 en 3x6. Chris zijn deel was 120 van 88 ballen met 19 vieren en één zes. De andere batsmen die aan bod kwamen, sprokkelden er nog wat bij en zo eindigde onze innings van 40 overs met 290 runs.
Tijdens de thee ging het natuurlijk vooral over records en statistieken. Gelukkig hebben we Piotr Pasierowski die dit allemaal voor ons bezighoudt en ook me terugwerkende kracht de cijfers bijwerkt. Dus heeft u nog een oud scoreboek liggen met cijfers van de zamis in Tour, graag contact opnemen met Piotr!
Onze fielding innings werd geopend door captain Bart en van de andere kant door Sebastiaan Capel. Een snelle twee wickets voor Sebastiaan zorgde ervoor dat Ferring zichzelf prompt ging ingraven. Ondanks twee wickets voor ieder van de beide Pasierowski’s en eentje voor de spin van Louis Collignon, lukte het ons maar niet alle tien wickets te nemen. Captain Bart bowlde super zuinig aan het eind, maar kwam er ook niet doorheen. En toen het zelfs Floris Kappelle in drie strakke overs niet lukte, was het duidelijk: we moesten maar de veertig overs uitspelen. En zo geschiedde, met Ferring CC die eindigden op een schamele 119 runs in 40 overs. En daarmee de winst voor VRA Zami met 171 runs.
Weinig verrassend dat de mannen van VRA Zami on Tour zich prima voelden op het festival van craftbier en muziek bij de Hentey Arms. Er gingen zelfs een paar voorzichtige handjes de lucht in bij de Rebel Yell van Billy Idol. En toen nog door naar de Monsoon voor grote flessen Cobra bier, poppadums, curry en naan brood.
Het maakte de nazit in ons Northfield House tot een latertje. Hoe zou dat de volgende dag tegen de Armadillos uitpakken? En hoe zou het niveauverschil dan zijn…..
Armadillos Date: 31st of July, 2023 Venue: Armadillos C.C. at Sheffield Park
Op 30 juli namen de gladiatoren van de VRA Zami het op tegen Armadillos CC. Onder de bezielende leiding van Berend Steenhof moest VRA het prachtige veld op Sheffield park veroveren.
De Armadillos hadden een verzameling jeugdvrienden uit de regio de dag ervoor laten komen uit London. Deze heren zagen er wat jonger en fitter uit dan de opstelling van VRA Zami. Wel hadden ze de avond ervoor tot een uur of 4 gediscussieerd over de batting line up. Dit was helaas geen groot voordeel, gezien de VRA Zami's ook niet erg vroeg onder wol waren gekropen de avond ervoor.
Het was nat en zoals zo veel velden in deze regio was de pitch low and slow. Berend ging meteen tossen en verloor deze. De lichtelijk brakke, net afgestudeerde, jongens besloten te fielden in de miezer. Een verassende beslissing die op meerder manieren verklaard kon worden. Hoopten ze dat ze ons voor weinig zouden uitbowlen om vroeg naar huis te kunnen? Wilden ze de brakheid in het veld snel van zich afschudden? Gunden ze ons de kans om een totaal neer te zetten om er een wedstrijd van te maken? Waren ze bang voor onze intergenerationele Australische bowling attack? We zullen de ware toedracht nooit weten.
Enfin, VRA ging batten in de miezer. Ewoud de man en Thomas Pasierowski begonnen te batten en moesten de twee archies, Archie Cooper en Archie Hannah trotseren. Dit ging met wisselend succes. Ewoud ging helaas snel uit, hij werd uitgevangen op de bowlerij van Archie Cooper. De bowlers bowlden strak en maakten goed gebruik van het trage veld wat lichtelijk afliep. Wouter Renardel kwam op 3 binnen en werd door een goede yorker verslagen na slechts 5 runs te hebben gemaakt. Archie cooper was wederom de succesvolle bowler.
Thomas bleef gelukkig staan om Nick Wories te mogen ontvangen in het midden. de twee jeugdvrienden hielden het samen gelukkig wel even uit. Helaas maakte het lage en trage veld wel slachtoffers. Thomas ging LBW na een knappe 32 runs gescoord te hebben.
Het scoren verliep traag door de moeilijke omstandigheden en goede bowlerij. Ook was het relatief jonge team behoorlijk kwiek op het touw om VRA verschillende boundaries te ontzeggen. Nick Wories bleek in de eerste innings de man die VRA op sleeptouw moest nemen. Overige honorouable mentions zijn een mooie drive van Sebastiaan capel voor 4 en een goede ondersteunende rol van Berend aand Nick. Berend en Nick liepen uiteindelijk NOT OUT van het veld na 35 overs om de thee te nuttigen.
De tweede innings moest VRA een totaal verdedigen van 161. Ondank het trage, natte veld was dit een tamelijk lage score. VRA begon vol goede moed aan de tweede innings terwijl het weer opklaarde. De bowlerij werd geopend door Piotr Pasierowski en Andrew Pulver. Ondanks goede lijnen en snode plannen werd er meteen goed gescoord door de Engelse batsmen. Waar zij in de eerste innings erg jolig waren en een praatje wilde maken, werden de Armadillos in het midden ineens vrij stoïcijns.
Ollie Bradley en Jamie Pike scoorden vrij snel respectievelijk 29 en 65 runs. De Engelsen kenden hun wicket goed, waren niet onder de indruk van de bowlerij of het soms twijfelachtige fieldende werk van VRA. First change Alec Pulver bak uiteindelijk de ban met een goed swingende bal waarmee hij een van de openinsbatsmen clean bowlde. Er kwam weer wat energie in het veld. Het volgende wicket viel ook snel.
Helaas kwam toen ene Josh Bebb in het veld en die had er zin in. De batsmen begonnen overal singles op te lopen en de slechte bal werd afgestraft met mooie schoten uit het boekje. Met een run rate van meer dan 6 wonnen de Armadillos al in de 25e over.
VRA had verloren en moest met de staart tussen de benen terug naar hun bescheiden optrekje. Wel ging VRA eerst via de beroemde lokale pub 'The Griffin' in Fletching. Een mooi café waar Floris Kapelle zijn lang verloren tweelingbroer ontmoette. Het was een emotioneel moment.
Hierna ging VRA snel naar huis om tot in de late uurtjes ponden middels auctions en pokerspelen uit te wisselen.
East Meon C.C. vs VRA: 30 over game Date: 31st of July, 2023 Venue: East Meon C.C.
Day 4 took VRA to the picturesque East Meon C.C. Another rainy and gloomy day saw the tourists attempt to get back to their winning ways after a disappointing match at Sheffield Park. Ewoud was named as skipper with centurions Chris and Merlin both recalled into the playing XI. A 30 over game was agreed, but it was unclear as to how much of a game would be played due to the poor weather.
The home team batted first and it quickly became clear that the small dimensions of the ground would be key as the opening batters started aggressively. Andy trapped one of the openers LBW relatively cheaply before batters number 2 and 3 both kicked on to make 80 plus scores. At one point East Meon were sitting at 140-1 after 16 overs threatening to push for a score around 300.
VRA were able to pull things back slightly however with Merlin taking 2 key wickets and Chris with a brilliant reflex run out off his own bowling. 232 was the final score after 30 overs. VRA was relieved to have limited to scoring but the total would still prove to be a daunting chase.
Merlin and Jelger opened for the tourists with the Sussex local wasting little time getting into swing of things striking the ball cleanly from the outset. Merlin ended up with 6 maximums, reaching a fifty in no time at all before being dismissed on 73. Jelger was happy to watch from the other end at first, but also joined in on the fun, striking boundaries and rotating the strike with ease. He found little support however as East Meon brought on some stronger bowlers and batter after batter fell cheaply. Once Jelger himself was bowled for 46 the situation became dire, VRA reduced to 6-135 with just over 11 overs left in the match. Skipper Ewoud attempted to lift his team, striking a couple boundaries but couldn’t get the support required. VRA all out for 167, well short of the home team.
Overall a tough day out for the tourists, the bowlers struggling with a wet ball and bleak conditions. Nevertheless beers were enjoyed with the opposition and the focus turned to the next match.
West Wittering C.C. vs VRA: 40 over game Date: 1st of August, 2023 Venue: West Wittering C.C.
Een snelle blik naar buiten op dinsdagochtend leerde ons dat er cricket gespeeld zou worden, en hoe! Op de zonnigste dag van de tour vond in retrospectie een wedstrijd plaats op het mooiste cricketveld van de week, aangezien de langverwachte wedstrijd op woensdag tegen de Grannies op het Arundel-cricketveld helaas ten prooi viel aan de wispelturige weergoden.
Na het wegspoelen van een kater met fish & chips op het op 5 minuten nabijgelegen strand, betraden de VRA-Tourists het prachtige terrein van West Wittering C.C. De scenery kon niet Britser zijn toen bleek dat er een croquet-clinic werd gehouden voor een groep bejaarden op een aangrenzend croquetveld. Onze dag was dan ook al gemaakt toen de jarige aanvoerder Sebas Capel trots verklaarde dat hij de rivaliserende captain had uitgelegd dat de toss slechts voor de foto was en dat VRA als eerste zou gaan batten op wat aanvankelijk leek op een 'batting wicket'.
Het was dan ook niet verrassend dat de aanvoerder ervoor koos om zelf te openen. Deze keuze bleek vruchtbaar. Samen met Ewoud de Man sloeg hij de eerste en enige 100-run opening partnership van de tour, waarbij Ewoud met een snelle 61 runs vooropging en Sebas met 23 runs een ondersteunende rol speelde. Nog nooit eerder vertoond op een cricketveld in de geschiedenis van het spel en voor menig VRA Tourist aan de zijlijn hét hoogtepunt van Sebas' innings was het blokken van de bal tijdens een 'Free hit'. Deze opmerkelijke actie werd met luid gejuich en termen als ‘VILLAGE!’ vanaf de zijlijn ontvangen.
Zoals vaak gebeurt bij sterke partnerships (alsof de één niet zonder de ander kan), vielen de eerste twee wickets snel achter elkaar. Het wicket van Ewoud leidde het wicket van Sebas in, waardoor er twee nieuwe batsmen in het midden stonden. Chris Braine was vastbesloten om de innings uit te spelen, terwijl Nick Wories zijn wicket weggooide na een korte cameo. Dit bleek een goede zet, want dit opende de deur voor Thomas Pasierowski, bijgenaamd "De Thomatenplonker". Gedreven en alsof hij wilde bewijzen dat het voorstel zijn normaal gesproken sneller scorende oudere broer Piotr "The Polish Plumber" Pasierowski voor hem te laten gaan in de batting order, belachelijk was, sloeg Thomas de ene na de andere bal richting de boundary. Samen met Chris voegde hij in slechts 13 (!) overs 138 runs toe aan het totaal. Chris eindigde zijn solide innings op 54 not out, en Thomas zag zijn prachtige innings eindigen op 77 runs op de voorlaatste bal van de laatste over. Een innings die meedingt naar de "innings van de week, week, week!" met twaalf vieren en één (mishit) zes. Tevreden en klaar om de complimenten in ontvangst te nemen, verliet Thomas het veld. Net toen hij wilde uitleggen dat hij net zo snel, zo niet sneller dan zijn broer kon scoren, sloeg Piotr een zes op de laatste bal van de innings en verliet het veld met een strike rate van 600. De gesprekken na de wedstrijd en tot laat in de avond laten zich raden. VRA eindigde de innings met een prachtige score van 302 voor 4 wickets. De vraag was of deze score voldoende zou zijn op dit indrukwekkende veld met een pitch die maar weinig bowlers natte dromen zou bezorgen…
Na een heerlijke traditionele 'thee', inclusief verjaardagstaart voor captain Capel, was het aan West Wittering om hun thuisvoordeel te benutten en aan Piotr om de "Man of the Match award" uit handen van zijn broertje te grissen. Beide missies zouden onsuccesvol blijken. Het lukte Piotr niet om het vijftienjarige(!) lokale talent Ollie Small uit te krijgen. Deze jongeman, die ook al de bowling voor West Wittering had geopend, was niet onder de indruk van het opening bowlingduo Piotr Pasierowski - Alec Pulver (aka Pulver Jr.). De rest van de batting order had dat overigens wel, althans van de bowling van Pulver Jr., die eindigde met indrukwekkende cijfers van 3-27 uit 7 overs. Captain Capel nam vervolgens de gewaagde beslissing om als eerste bowlingwissel onze full-time spinner in te zetten ‘PUT THE SPINNNERS ON!’. Dit bleek een uitstekende zet. Louis Collingnon bracht de batsmen volledig in verwarring met zijn tergend langzame en draaiende ballen, die zelfs hem verrasten. Hij pakte het wicket van een zekere O'Connor, die vervelend lang aan slag stond en door Ewoud als een Australische indoor cricketer werd beschreven. Wat Ewoud daar precies mee bedoelde, was voor niemand duidelijk. Dit wicket bracht een langharige, gespierde, blonde hardhitter in het veld, maar ook hij werd beteugeld door Collignons mysterieuze ballen. Collignon eindigde met 1-28 uit 8 overs. Toen Saranga Liyanage uiteindelijk het wicket van Small voor 52 runs pakte, was de weerstand definitief gebroken. Hoewel West Wittering de overs volmaakten, kwamen ze niet verder dan 208-7. Een overtuigende overwinning voor VRA met maar liefst 94 runs!
De stralende winnende captain deelde nog enkele verkeerd geproduceerde junior 'bucket hatts’ uit aan de tegenstander en na een hamburger vertrokken we naar ons thuisbasis in Westergate. Met de wetenschap dat de wedstrijd van woensdag hoogstwaarschijnlijk zou worden verregend, bereidden de Tourists zich voor op een lange pokeravond...
The Grannies vs VRA: rained off
Date: 2nd of August, 2023

Brigands C.C. vs VRA: 38 over match Date: 3rd of August, 2023 Venue: Brigands C.C. at Broadhalfpenny Down
Having the penultimate day of the tour washed out, VRA touring army, was so eager to finish the tour on a high. As everyone got a rest day on the day before, the selection committee decided to provide everyone a chance during this match and this meant some of the members were part of only one half of the game – either batting or fielding. The Cradle of cricket - Hambledon, was awaiting them with its hometeam - the Brigands.
Although there was a slight scare of rain in in the morning, the sky was cleared up to the delight of the two teams, so that they could start with a 40 over game. Piotr Paserovski, the captain for the day for VRA touring army, won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be very difficult and unfamiliar conditions, especially with extremely low and uneven bounce of the wicket. Marten Slagter and Berend Steenhof opened the innings for VRA and their partnership only lasted for 4 runs as Berend fell for only 1 run. Saranga Liyanage joined Marten in resistance and the pair put up a partnership of 31 before both fell in quick succession. The dismissal of Saranga in fact triggered a collapse in VRA batting line up with Floris Kapelle and Eric Fabry de Jonge going back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers and and Louis Collignon being dismissed for 1 run. With the score at 45 for 6, the in form Nick Wories was joined by the captain Piotr Paserovski, who launched a counter attack to get VRA out of the trouble. Although not in his usual explosive manner, Piotr managed to hit some lusty blows, taking the charge to the Brigands. He was well supported by Nick, who himself got into much better rhythm as the innings progressed to bring VRA to a respectable score of 103 after 30 overs. Unfortunately, with Piotr’s dismissal for 29, VRA also lost two more quick wickets of Wouter Renardel and Alec Pulver, leaving the daunting task of raising the VRA score to a defendable one again to Nick and the number 11 batsman Andy Pulver.
The pair however was upto the task and Nick took the charge against the Brigands bowlers, bringing up a well-deserved half century. Andy, inspired by the banter from the opposition, who asked their barman to prepare the kettle, when he came in to the crease, gave the much needed support to Nick, while himself making it to double figures. However, the rain had the last say on the VRA innings as it was cut short at 38 overs, while the scoreboard showed 148 for 9.
After an extended tea break due to rain interruption, the team captains decided to restrict the game to 38 overs without adjusting the score of the first innings. VRA had the perfect start to their bowling innings as Alec Pulver managed to dismiss the opening batsman of Brigands for a duck. This wicket also marked Alec matching his dad’s record of taking 8 wickets on a single VRA tour. Opening the bowling with his son, Andy Pulver himself bowled a sensational spell of swing bowling giving away absolutely nothing for the Brigand’s batsman to work on. This bowling spell, with an economy of 2.0 in 5 overs, was later recognized by umpire Christopher Dean as Man of the Match performance. Pulvers made sure that Brigands only score at 2.8 runs per over during the first 10 overs despite only losing 1 wicket. Afterwards, Piotr decided to bring himself and Merlin Smethhurst into the attack looking for the all important wickets at that stage. Merlin delivered immediately with a wicket in his first over and two wickets in consecutive balls in the second over. Piotr joined the party later, but still caused 2 important breakthroughs leaving Brigands 54 for 6 in 20 overs. Brigands however got some life into their chase with 15 run over from Marten Slagter. However Sebastian Capel had other ideas. Using the low bounce of the wicket to his advantage and persisting on a wicket to wicket line, Sebas delivered a match winning spell of 3 for 23 in 6 overs. In a valiant attempt to bring his team to victory, Brigands batter L. Gray made 30 not out, however was not enough to stop VRA from taking the victory by 28 runs.
It was a fitting end to an amazing week for every member of the VRA touring brigade, ending the tour victorious with 4 wins to 2 losses.
Nick Wories
VRA Zami 1 – Salland
Zami 1 hosted the team from Salland on Saturday 10th on the hottest day of the year. Thanks to VRA1 making short work of their T20 opponents in the earlier game, the first field was now available and the opportunity to play on turf was gleefully accepted by all.
Captain Louis lost the toss (again…) and we were sent into the field with a couple of extra drinks breaks on the schedule. Opening bowlers Pulver (1/26 from 7) and de Man (3/34 from 7) applied early pressure and were rewarded with early wickets - after 9 overs Salland had slumped to 15 for 3. From here Salland set about stabilising the innings firstly through the effort of Dutch International legend Steven Lubbers and later additional middle order support. Fair to say not the best effort from ZAMI1 in the field and runs continued to flow - perhaps the heat was finally playing a role too. While a few extra wickets fell towards the end of the innings, Slland reached a very competitive 207/7 from their 35 overs.
Looking to score at 6 an over to chase this down, the openers got off to the perfect start and by the time Himanshu (30) fell, 72 runs were already on the board after 12 overs. Prasun (51) and Cameron Shepherd (41) consolidated this position further and progressed the score to 144-1 with more that 10 overs to come - surely with plenty of able batsmen to come, victory was in sight ! Unfortunately the next 7 overs saw 6 wickets fall for just 26 runs and although the pairing of Ewoud (19) and Louis (16) continued to swing hard, defeat was pull from the jaws of victory and we fell 6 runs short.
The final result was the only disappointment in a beautiful day of cricket at VRA and both teams enjoyed the sun and amber refreshments in the early evening. Talk of redemption started soon after the final shaking of hands and we are eagerly awaiting our return trip to Salland this coming Saturday to set things right again.
AA Pulver
VRA Zami 1 – Ajax
Fair to say that Season '23 has been a frustrating one for Zami 1 - while winning 3 of our first 4 games, as the season progressed victories have become more allusive, with only one win in the next 8 games. Despite this drought the squad has remained energised and always looking forward to the next match. So it was with this sense of optimism that we took to Field 3 on Saturday to take on the team from Ajax.
Batting first Zami 1 got off to a solid start, scoring at a good rate with opener Prasun joined by Dan Enslin (16) who was timing the ball effortlessly. Unfortunately a middle order collapse saw the run rate stall and at 117/6 after 24 overs a sub-par score was on the horizon. While wickets had been falling at the other end, Prasun was steadily going about this business of scoring runs - putting the bad balls away for four, finding gaps in field to rotate the strike, with most balls being well time and along the ground. Chris Braine, fresh from a century on the recent Zami West Sussex Tour, came in at number 8 and this pair built a strong partnership and pushed the score back towards a competitive one. Apart from 3 fours and a six, Chris broke the toe-end of his bat before momentarily dislocating his shoulder trying to again clear the boundary - at which point he retired hurt on 38. The last over saw Prasun finally dismissed for 91 - run out by his partner in the scramble for late runs. This was Prasun’s highest score for VRA and a wonderful innings to watch - perhaps if the Gemeente had cut the outfield grass on Friday the magical 100 could have been reached ! Nevertheless the team total of 193 was indeed competitive with Zami 1 having a strong bowling attack at their disposal.
With an early wicket to Praveen (1/18 from 4), Zami 1 set about restricting the run rate to build the pressure up on Ajax and in particular our long-time nemesis Rick Verhaar (who scored a century in our earlier clash). With a couple more wickets and tight bowling from Angus Lees (1 for 28 from 7) and Cameron McK (15 from 5) this strategy was going to plan, but Rick was still at the crease and had already passed 50. The match then took a dramatic change with the introduction of Ernst into the attack - first ball enticing Rick to swing hard, only for a high top edge to be well caught by young keeper Sander. A 2nd wicket followed a few balls later, and then Ernst was denied a third wicket in the same over when the umpire seemed to be the only person in Amsterdamse Bos not hearing the edge to the keeper. Stand in captain Pulver (2 for 26 from 7) closed out preceding, with Ajax finishing at 153/7 after their 35 overs.
An enjoyable game was had by all and a welcome return to the winners circle for Zami1. Final match for the season will be the Clash of the Woods on 16th September, which will be much anticipated by all Zamis.
