How's That verschijnt tijdens het cricketseizoen wekelijks

Allereerst excuses van uw hoofdredacteur voor het late verschijnen van deze editie. Voorbereiding voor de Reünie van komende zaterdag eisten hun tol, waardoor dinsdag in de doorgaans overbevolkte How's That!-redactiekamer zonder veel gevaar een bowling-kanon kon worden afgeschoten. Niettemin leverde de afgelopen week voldoende stof, vooral tot nadenken en in sommige gevallen om over naar huis te schrijven.

Laten we beginnen met dat wat iedere Nederlander bezighoudt; wat was het nat hè! Kletsnat! Daar hadden veel teams last van, veronderstellen wij, want veel verslagen ontvingen we niet. Toch konden enkele teams hun wedstrijden afronden, tussen de buien door. VRA1 speelde op zaterdag de Twenty20 semi-finale tegen Dosti en verspeelde in die wedstrijd een veelbelovende uitgangspositie, waardoor de finale aan onze neus voorbij ging. Desondanks heeft het Eerste in die competitie dit jaar uitstekend gepresteerd.

Op zondag in eigen huis de kraker tegen HCC. VRA zou bij winst veilig zijn en Topklasse-cricket prolongeren. Een gelukkige toss, gevolgd door een bemoedigende start met de bal bracht HCC al gauw in problemen. Hoewel HCC zich licht herstelde leek veel erop te wijzen dat deze wedstrijd door VRA gewonnen zou kunnen worden. Dat mocht niet zo zijn, want wat iedereen 's ochtends vroeg al vreesde werd na lang wachten bewaarheid; de wedstrijd kon niet worden afgerond. Komende zaterdag is de inhaalwedstrijd vastgesteld, hetgeen een extra attractie zal vormen op de genoemde Reünistendag. Daarover verderop meer.

VRA2 maakt een moeilijk seizoen door, kan degradatie helaas niet meer ontlopen en verloor in het natte, lange Leidse gras helaas wederom de wedstrijd tegen Ajax. VRA4 en 5 zagen hun wedstrijd verregenen, maar VRA3 speelde -eerst battend- een onvervalste tie tegen GroenWit, als we E-cricket mogen geloven. Het relaas van die wedstrijd zien we graag nog in de volgende HT.

Voorafgaand aan het weekend meldde het illustere Britse touring team The Crocodiles zich in het Amsterdamse Bos, alweer voor de 18e keer(!). Allereerst voor een wedstrijd tegen de Zamigo's, die gewonnen werd door de Crocs, maar niet voordat een aanzienlijk aantal Crocs zichzelf onhandig blesseerde. Daar hadden de VRA Zami's blijkbaar op gerekend, want de tweede wedstrijd van de gedecimeerde Crocks tegen VRA Zami 2 vond daags daarna plaats. Aangevuld met VRA-coryfeeën uit heden en verleden (Bart Schotte was here!) waren de Crocs desondanks een prooi voor een ontketend VRA in een ouderwets runfiësta onder redelijke weersomstandigheden.

En tenslotte natuurlijk nog even aandacht voor de VRA-Reünistendag van aanstaande zaterdag. Het belooft een prachtig festijn te worden met grote opkomst van oud-leden, familie en liefst 4 wedstrijden op onze velden. Laat een ieder die zich nog niet heeft opgegeven, maar bij nader inzien wel van plan is te komen, zich alsnog aanmelden via de website. Dat kan nog t/m vrijdag.

In verband met de ingelaste inhaalwedstrijd van VRA1 is er zaterdag sprake van 4(!) thuiswedstrijden en zal de Reünistenwedstrijd plaatsvinden op het juniorenveld, tussen veld 1 en het kunstgras van Hurley. Hier zal door Paul een graswicket worden geprepareerd.

Zaterdag: VRA Reünistendag 2014

Het is bijna zover... ijs en weder dienende. Want de zomer laat ons wel op een erg ongelukkig moment in de steek. Vooralsnog lijkt er zaterdag en zondag enige verbetering aan te komen, daar rekenen we op.

De Reünie is bedoeld als informeel weerzien voor iedereen die ooit iets met VRA te maken heeft gehad. Oud-leden, donateurs en sponsors, maar nadrukkelijk ook huidige leden, donateurs en sponsors. We gaan er een ouderwets gezellige VRA-feest van maken.

De KNCB is zo vriendelijk geweest de verregende wedstrijd van VRA1 tegen HCC op deze dag te laten over spelen, zodat deze Topklasse-wedstrijd op veld 1 het passende decor zal vormen van de feestelijkheden. Daarbij is winst in alle opzichten natuurlijk wel van belang. Op veld 2 zullen ZAMI 1 en ZAMI 2 'the Battle of the Woods' uitvechten, een onderlinge derby in vriendschappelijke sfeer, maar wel degelijk een competitiewedstrijd. Denkt u niet dat de heren elkaar de overwinning cadeau doen, het zal er heet aan toe gaan. Er valt kortom iets te zien voor de aanwezigen.

Omdat ook de Dames nog spelen op veld 3, is besloten de Reünistenwedstrijd te laten plaatsvinden op het 'juniorenveld'. Om precies te zijn, achter 'de boom', tussen veld 1 en het kunstgras van Hurley. Paul Polak zal daar een keurige graspitch prepareren, waarop met een zachte bal gespeeld zal worden. Legguards en andere accessoires zijn daarmee overbodig, hetgeen veel gedoe, tijdverlies en onnodige blessures voorkomt. Tijdens de jaarlijkse India-cricketdagen op onze velden hebben wij gezien dat dit erg leuke wedstrijden oplevert. Cricketkleding is uiteraard gewenst, maar je zware bag mag je thuislaten, zo je die al hebt. Voor de wedstrijd hebben we momenteel ruim 20 aanmeldingen, dus dat komt goed.

Zoals aangekondigd zal ter ondersteuning van de clubkas ook een veiling plaatsvinden van artikelen en diensten die door sponsoren, leden en cricketvrienden ter beschikking zijn gesteld. De volledige lijst met objecten zal vrijdag op de website worden gepubliceerd, zodat u zich kunt voorbereiden. Onder de hamer van veilingmeester Floris Kappelle wagen zich oude cricketprenten, een gesigneerd bat, wedstrijdballen met historische waarde, een originele VRA-blazer, een overnachting in een B&B, schilderijen, boeken, een diner, een professionele videoclip van jouw team en talrijke memorabilia. Mocht u nog zaken ter beschikking willen stellen, laat het ons dan alstublieft uiterlijk vrijdag weten via reunistendag@vra.nl.

Uiteraard wordt er uitgebreid geborreld en gegeten. Tijdens de Reünistenwedstrijd 's middags zullen al diverse hartige tussendoortjes worden geserveerd, later geruisloos overgaand in de betere borrelsnacks. Een en ander ter plaatse vers bereid door een professionele kok, die tegen de avond zorg zal dragen voor een uitgebreid barbecue buffet. Ondertussen is er alle tijd om voor uzelf en elkaar verklaringen te zoeken waarom u de afgelopen jaren niet, of slechts sporadisch op VRA te vinden was. Het is er immers goed toeven. Na het eten is er nog tijd voor Music & Dance met een door DJ Thijs van Nierop uitgekiende muziekselectie, voor wie er geen genoeg van kan krijgen.

That's not Cricket!

Naar aanleiding van recente misdragingen in de Nederlandse Topklasse, die zelfs in het buitenland niet onopgemerkt bleven, signaleerde Bertus de Jong in een zeer lezenswaardig artikel op CricketEurope, dat er sprake lijkt van een glijdende schaal waartegen stevig zou moeten worden opgetreden. Helaas verloopt dat niet zo adequaat als van een sportbond verwacht zou mogen worden. Zachte heelmeesters... enfin, u kent het, met als gevolg dat het umpire-corps zich op haar beurt niet serieus genomen voelt. Een even interessante als zorgelijke kwestie die beslist aandacht verdient. Voor een juiste beeldvorming leek het ons goed het artikel van Bertus in How's That! over te nemen, in de hoop dat het ook op VRA de bewustwording rondom dergelijke onverkwikkelijke zaken versterkt. Waarbij overigens aangetekend dat VRA gelukkig bij geen van dergelijke incidenten betrokken is geweest.

Ugly Sunday reignites discipline debate

The on-field indiscipline on display at last Sunday's ill-tempered Topklasse games has stirred up still more controversy. Events at Excelsior-Hermes and ACC-HCC prompted suggestions of a general decline in both umpiring standards and player behaviour, whilst the ongoing dispute between umpires Erno Ruchtie and Ashraf Din and the KNCB, arising from the five bookings meted out at the match between ACC and VOC six weeks ago, has led some to accuse the KNCB of failing to afford their officials adequate backing.

Last Sunday's match at Thurlede between Excelsior and Hermes was never likely to be a cozy affair, with potential escape from a four-way relegation battle on the line as well as the usual pressure of a Schiedam Derby. But few expected things to get as ugly as they did, with consistent over-appealing and rising tempers eventually culminating in Luuk van Troost finding himself on his back in the middle of the pitch courtesy of a body check from Borg Lenstra, prompting Excelsior players to storm onto the pitch to remonstrate - the most egregious of several regrettable scenes in a game which saw no less than three players written up by umpires Jansen and Hilhorst.

Meanwhile the prolonged and fouled-mouthed haranguing to which Feiko Kloppenburg was subjected at ACC v HCC on the same day (for the supposed offense of failing to walk after nicking one behind), which was allowed to continue for several overs before the umpires felt compelled to step in, prompted HCC's Fred Staal to publish an open letter to the KNCB on the subject.

Staal, lamenting that language which even on the football field would warrant a red card is now apparently tolerated and even accepted in Dutch cricket, noted that the audible profanity on the field was met with a disappointingly indulgent attitude from umpires and spectators alike - in contrast with norms in international cricket, where "even a disapproving glance at the umpire is punished with a booking and/or suspension". With reference to the events following the ACC-VOC drama, Staal warns "if our umpires do not (or may not) intervene, then the 'King of Sports' [will soon face serious problems] in the Netherlands."

Staal is not alone in connecting these behavioural lapses to the handling of the five disciplinary referrals which followed the ACC-VOC game in July, implying that players may have been emboldened to flout the umpires' authority by the leniency shown the five players involved and the subsequent dispute between the KNCB and the umpires, Erno Ruchtie and Ashraf Din.

The controversy and dissent that marred the game was prompted by the dismissal of Usman Malik for obstructing the field, under somewhat confused circumstances. Five ACC players were written up for offenses ranging from level one to level three - two for dissent shown during the game, and three for their continued remonstrations afterwards. Ruchtie especially seems to have been the target of the immoderate fulminations of ACC players and spectators alike, being informed in no uncertain terms that he was no longer welcome at the club.

The five reports were duly submitted to the Bestuur, who would decide what action would be taken. To the surprise of many, not least the umpires themselves, the matter was not referred to the Tuchtcommissie (disciplinary committee), but rather the Bestuur elected to directly impose administrative sanctions. These sanctions ranged from warnings to one match suspended bans, essentially meaning that the players and the club escaped any effective repercussions from the debacle. Din and Ruchie, it seems, reacted to the decision angrily and in their subsequent email and telephone exchanges with KNCB chairman Jacques Mulders rather exceeded the bounds of civility - at least in the eyes of the SRC, who consequently informed the umpires that they would not be appointed to stand in any games until at least the 10th of August, and should not expect to be awarded any T20 games, nor any decisive matches for the remainder of the season. Din was furthermore informed that his international duties would also be subject to review.

The SRC has been keen to stress that neither umpire has been officially suspended, and none of the measures taken against the pair technically constitutes disciplinary action. Nonetheless the difference between deciding not to appoint an umpire and official suspension seems to be little more than a semantic distinction. An appeal was subsequently lodged with Commissie van Beroep, who are expected to rule on the affair next week.

Regardless of the appeals committee's decision however, effective upshot of the entire drama is that the players in question have - to all intents and purposes - gotten off with a slap on the wrist and no further tangible sanction, whilst the umpires found themselves disciplined and, in the eyes of many, publicly undermined. Ruchtie, it seems, is unlikely to continue as an umpire and if rumours are to be believed he is not alone amongst umpires in considering throwing in the towel.

Ruchtie and Din, it should be stressed, are not entirely innocent in the affair. As Mulders points out, the responsibility of the umpires ends with submitting the report, the decision to impose administrative sanctions or refer the matter to the disciplinary committee being the prerogative of the bestuur, in this case represented by Mulders together with Gerard Inden as Secretary of the SRC. Moreover, public criticism of such decisions constitutes a breach of the code of conduct for umpires, and it is understood that Din and Ruchtie's opinions on the decision were expressed vociverously and in less than temperate terms.

Nonetheless it is undeniable that the sanctions imposed - three warnings and two suspended bans - were considerably more lenient than one might expect from the Richtlijn Straffen bij Overtredingen given the seriousness of the offences as reported. Whilst there seems little doubt that procedures were followed to the letter, it is hardly surprising that the downgrading of the offences, which as reported included a level three offence for intimidation, should provoke a response from the umpires in question - especially given that the umpires themselves were the target of the alleged improper conduct. Whilst there is no obligation for the Bestuur to involve, consult or even inform the umpires about such decisions, neither is there anything preventing them from doing so. In the circumstances the reaction of the umpires to finding out second-hand about a decision they understandably perceive as a public humiliation was, if not excusable, nonetheless entirely foreseeable. The subsequent suspension of Ruchtie and Din in all but name, regardless of the provocation, paints an extremely unfortunate public picture of the confidence of the KNCB in its umpires.

Whilst there is little question that the Bestuur acted entirely in accordance with the procedures as they are laid down in the Tuchtregelment, one may certainly ask whether the course they chose was a wise one. Referring the matter to the disciplinary committee might equally have been perceived as kicking the whole business into the long grass, and the very point of the current procedure is to bypass the potential delays and complications involved in such a move in favour of prompt action on disciplinary breaches. But if it was the opinion of the Bestuur, contrary to that of the umpires, that the offences were not so severe as to merit suspensions, then surely the prudent course would have been to allow the Disciplinary Committee to deliver that judgment down the line, after tempers had cooled. The point of the option of immediate administrative sanction is surely to allow swift and decisive action - it is difficult to see any merit in this swift and decisive inaction.

If players are permitted to publicly question the competence and authority of umpires on the field without severe sanction, it risks making the position of umpires essentially untenable. The situation is only further exacerbated if, as seems increasingly evident, the weight accorded to umpires' reports is made dependent on the (perceived)quality of an umpire's management of a game. The fact that during its deliberations the Bestuur consulted the views of an umpire assessor and a supposedly unaffiliated spectator with umpiring experience carries with it the unfortunate implication that the umpires' reported (mis)handling of the game had a direct bearing on the decision not to refer the bookings to the disciplinary committee or to impose more severe sanctions.

Quite simply, the authority of an umpire should not be predicated upon his match performance. And it is incumbent on the Bestuur to stress this point. The credibility of umpires in the Topklasse has come under attack repeatedly in recent weeks, with a number of commentators alleging a consistent decline in umpiring standards on social media and indeed on our own forum. There is, in truth, little evidence to support these assertions, and such evidence as is supplied is invariably anecdotal, but in such circumstances the support of the KNCB for its officials is all the more indispensable.

Mulders himself, to his credit, went to some length to refute this position in these pages, pointing out that on available statistical evidence from captain's reports and the like the standard of umpiring has in fact improved in recent years - albeit marginally. Moreover the KNCB has not been entirely inactive in addressing the question of player indiscipline which has been a consistent problem in the lower leagues, instituting a policy of deploying senior umpires and observers to "high-risk" games in an attempt to curb the issue.

It is in any case regrettable that such measures are even necessary, and however one apportions blame between the KNCB and the umpires the fact remains that the principle culpability for reprehensible on-field behaviour lies with the captains and, above all, with the players themselves. After all we are talking about grown men, presumably capable of navigating daily life without resorting to streams of obscenity and invective, who should not have to depend on the threat of sanction to behave with a modicum of civility on the field. The Topklasse is after all a cricket league. Not a reform school.

Nonetheless it is difficult to see the handling of this affair as having any effect but to encourage players to believe that unruliness and insolence on the field will go effectively unpunished, and to discourage umpires from reporting such behaviour. It is fair to say that much of the criticism directed at the KNCB over this business has been based on misinformation and a lack of understanding of disciplinary procedures, but then little effort has been made to correct this. To date no rationale for downgrading the offences to level one has been offered, nor, based on the facts, does it seem likely that a convincing one could be made.

Even could such a case be made however, it would do little to change how the affair is perceived, and perception matters as much as practice. In fact in the case of the Board having confidence in and being prepared to back umpires, perception is effectively all that matters. If it is widely believed that the authority of umpires is being undermined by the KNCB, then their credibility is compromised in practice - regardless of whether the authorities acted appropriately in the circumstances or not.

The mishandling of this affair quite clearly illustrates the shortcomings of the present system of dealing with disciplinary issues. Whilst the desirability of a streamlined method of dealing with offences is clear, placing such decisions entirely in the hands of a two-man committee - making the disciplinary committee functionally redundant - looks less and less defensible. At the very least, downgrading the level of offences as reported by the umpires or imposing sanctions substantially out of line with those prescribed by the disciplinary guidelines should be the sole prerogative of the full disciplinary committee. Cases where the offence is clear and uncontested can and should be speedily resolved, ideally with the agreement of all parties. But arbitrary administrative sanctions which are either disputed by players or which effectively undermine umpires should not be the sole decision of an unaccountable subcommittee, as very clearly shown by this entirely avoidable controversy - one that nobody would have hoped for but anybody could have predicted.

You're the Umpire! #2

De Engelse krant The Guardian brengt al jaren een hele aardige strip in het sportkatern, een strip die net als z'n voetbaltegenhanger (sinds 1957) 'You're the Ref!' in Engeland cultstatus heeft verworven. Aan de hand van actuele gebeurtenissen in de betreffende sport worden de lezer lastige cases voorgelegd, die de nodige regelkennis vergen. De prachtige illustraties zijn van de hand van Paul Trevillion (74). *Klik op de afbeelding om te vergroten. Oplossingen worden gegeven door zijn vaste sidekick John Holder. We geven ze er in How's That! maar meteen bij.

John Holder's verdict:

1) Not out. To give a player out for obstruction, the act must have been deliberate. There is no way that you can say with any certainty that the striker deliberately struck the ball. He was desperately trying to return to his ground. Had the ball broken the wicket, though, he would have been out bowled.

2) At no stage of the game must a batsman cause avoidable damage to the pitch, and he should never run on the protected area. The first warning you issued was also the final warning, and it applies to the entire team for the duration of that innings. So when he repeats the transgression, cancel the run and award five penalty runs to the fielding side. That means the batting side are now seven runs short of a victory. Players believe that the team batting last can run wherever they like. That's totally incorrect.

Amsterdamse Bos, Saturday August 16th

On a cloudy and rainy day at the VRA pavilion Zami 2 welcomed their friends The Crocodiles, who had come over from the small village of Balcombe to visit the cricketing capital on the continent for probably the 63rd time in a row. The Crocs had arrived in Amsterdam already on Thursday afternoon for some “typical Dutch cultural events”. On Friday they played their first overseas annual match and quite easily against The Zamigo's. This game was played at the ABN Ground, so they were extra keen on playing on the beautiful main ground on Saturday.

VRA Zami 2’s captain of the day Willem van Mierlo agreed on a time-game again and (off course...) The Crocs batted first. This year The Crocs (or should we call them The Beacroft Family nowadays?) only managed to arrange 8 players, so mercenaries Justin Campbell and good old Bart Schotte joined them. Also The Dutch delegation of The Crocs Floris Kappelle, Theo Lindemann and Herman Geveke presented The Crocs today in this 10-a-side match.

Willem bravely gave the new ball to second timer Jan Verboom (0/0/23/3) and Huib Bier (0/0/34/4), who both were a bit expensive. Marc de Kruijff joined the party (0/0/28/6) as well, but The Crocs had their eye in on the slow bowling and kept the board ticking. The Crocs scored 89 (Jervis Smith (24) and Woose Grey (57)) runs before the first wicket fell, also due to some sloppy fielding by the VRA fielders. Time to put some pressure on the batsmen and so Marnix Hazeweijer (2/0/51/10), Humayoun Mohamed (1/0/32/7), Joost Dekkers (1/1/2/3) and Willem van Mierlo (0/0/30/9) were put on and the run rate soon dropped. At that time Floris Kappelle (36) and Bart Schotte (75) came in and started building a strong partnership of 113! At a score of 214 for 4 Jervis Smith decided they probably could have stayed in for hours, so he declared after VRA Zami 2 had bowled 44 overs.

After lunch Willem send in Jan Verboom and captain of the 4th Sud to open the batting. Sud only managed to score 12 runs, but Jan exceeded all expectations in his maiden batting innings and scored 20 runs including 4 fours; well done! Marc de Kruijff scored just 1 run and Benno van Nierop added a strong and quick 18 runs. When the last 20 overs of this time game started the score was 64 for 4, so VRA Zami needed 150 runs. Humayoun (38, including 2 sixes) and Willem (68, 7 fours) speeded up things by scoring quick singles and started hitting boundaries in a great 98 partnership. When Willem's wicket fell shortly after Humayoun had been send back to the pavilion it was up to Joost and Huib. Joost (36) started hitting the ball from the moment he came in and was well supported by Huib (9). In some thrilling last overs The Crocs felt defeat was upon them and on the third ball of the 20th over Huib struck a glorious cover drive to secure victory!

Finally we have beaten The Crocs in a time-game… A good warm up game for The Clash of the Woods next weekend! Drinks, speeches, gifts, dinner, gezelligheid, etc. afterwards. Man of the Match was Willem, who captained the winning side, bowled well and scored 68 runs. Runner up was Jan Verboom, who opened the bowling and batting and is an added value to the team (on and off the field).

Jeugd: Impressie Flamingo Juniores Toernooi - Deel 2

Na verlies tegen de Haagsche (zie HT nr.17) volgde de wedstrijd tegen de Amsterdamsche CC aan de Aanloop. Nu waren de VRA-ers wél compleet door toevoeging van twee ’Bloemen’ aan het team (Lancelot en Oliver). VRA mocht eerst battend een totaal proberen neer te zetten tegen de Zulfiqar-combi. Dat bleek een totaal van 103 runs te worden, vooral door een 35 runs van Bilal Ahmad. Te verwachten was dat ACC weinig moeite zou hebben om te winnen, maar uiteindelijk werd het nog een aardig spel met 105/4/31 als resultaat.

De resultaten gaven geen zicht meer op de volgende ronde in Schiedam. Toch stond de thuiswedstrijd tegen Rood & Wit nog op het programma. Dat bleek een interessante ontmoeting te worden met een deskundig publiek, mooi weer en toch een officiële DL-target (voor eventualiteiten). Captain Victor Lubbers was nu de grote man met 52 runs en 3 of 4 wickets. Het totaal van VRA werd 115 in 40 overs. Rood & Wit begon rustig aan bat, maar verloor toch wickets, waardoor zij vrij lang achterbleven op het DL-target. VRA werd goed gecoacht tegen de grotere en ervarener spelers van Rood & Wit. Pas tegen het eind van de match (na 103/8) bleken de gasten het benodigde totaal van 116 runs te kunnen halen.

Het vervolg in Schiedam ging tussen Rood & Wit en Excelsior. Dat leverde een finaleplaats op voor Rood & Wit (125 – 111 runs). ACC had de VCC/Ajax-combi als tegenstander. VCC/Ajax scoorde 117 runs in 33 overs. ACC had toch 38.3 overs nodig om te winnen, 120/6.

In de finaleronde werd de wedstrijd om de 3e plaats gewonnen door Excelsior met 154 runs tegen VCC/Ajax, 93. Om het Kampioenschap en de Flamingo-plaquette speelden Rood & Wit en ACC een mooie wedstrijd, die door ACC werd gewonnen. Rood & Wit 138 a.o. en ACC de terechte kampioen van 2014 bij de junioren.

WICKETKEEPING

Keeping wicket is not a job for the fellow who is likely to take a nap on the field. Concentration is number one essential to success as a stumper. He must always be on his toes and always be alert in mind and body.

The Value of Practice
The player who chooses to become a keeper must be ready to practice hard and keep on practicing. I recommend to practice to all budding wicket-keepers.

Five Basic Points First of all I want you to memorize these five basic points and on them the whole secret of successful wicket-keeping depends. 1. Good view and position 2. Evenly balanced on both feet 3. Watch the ball from the moment the bowler start his run-up 4. Ride with ball and do not snatch 5. Get your body well behind the ball.

Correct position behind the stumps is most important. Stand back to fast bowling. The reason for standing back to the fast bowler should be fairly obvious. Not only will it unable you to take the ball cleanly and comfortably, but will give a much better chance to hold those catches that come fast off the bat.

Whatever position you adopt, always stand evenly balanced with the body weight equally and comfortably distributed on both feet.
Of all position in the field that of wicket-keeper is at once the most important and the most exacting. Fitness and mobility are very important.

He is always in the game. Every ball delivered must be watched with a practised eye. Even when the ball is in the field, the wicket-keeper cannot relax for one brief moment. That’s why concentration is a fundamental to effective and successful wicket-keeping.
