How's That verschijnt tijdens het cricketseizoen wekelijks
Voorwoord
Met het aanbreken van augustus en daarmee de laatste competitiemaand voor cricket in Nederland, kijk ik terug op een mooie maand juli. Hoewel de competities op hun eind lopen, hebben we statistisch gezien (het blijft toch cricket) een mooie zomer. Dit seizoen zijn namelijk tot tot op heden de meeste wedstrijden gespeeld, waarbij slechts 2 wedstrijden zijn afgelast vanwege regen (tegenover 7 verregende wedstrijden in 2015 en 10 in 2014). Laten we hopen dat de staart van het seizoen deze goede cijfers intact laat.
Sinds de voorgaande How's That zijn er ondanks het cricketvrije weekend een groot aantal wedstrijden gespeeld. VRA 1 wist in de Topklasse haar laatste twee wedstrijden tegen ACC en VOC te winnen waardoor onze heren op een gedeeld laatste plaats de play-offs ingaan. Hoewel dit niet klinkt als een prettig uitgangspunt voor het komende deel van de competitie, zijn de verschillen met de andere teams klein en zijn de kansen om behoud van Topklasse gunstig.
Met uw steun aan de boundary zouden de benodigde overwinningen zeker in het verschiet moeten liggen!
Verder staat VRA aan de vooravond een druk programma nu het einde van het seizoen nadert. Of het venijn in de staart zit zal moeten blijken, maar er zullen naast de ontknoping van de Topklasse ook twee grote evenementen plaatsvinden: de WCLC-wedstrijd Nederland - Nepal en de landelijke T20 finale. Voor beide evenementen is VRA nog op zoek naar vrijwilligers, maar iedereen is welkom om te komen kijken. Meer informatie leest u hieronder.

Events: NL XI - Nepal (WCLC) + T20 finale
De komende weken staat er een aantal fantastische, sportieve evenementen op VRA op het programma. Allereerst speelt het Nederlands heren elftal op zaterdag 13 en maandag 15 augustus twee wedstrijden voor het World Cricket League Championship tegen Nepal. De wedstrijden zijn op VRA, aanvangstijd beide dagen is 11.00 uur. Toegangskaarten zijn op de dag bij de ingang verkrijgbaar en kosten €10,00. Kinderen van 12 jaar en jonger komen gratis binnen. Zondag 14 en dinsdag 16 augustus zijn aangewezen als reservedagen.
Vervolgens op zaterdag 20 augustus de landelijke T20 Finaledag; op deze dag zal de ontknoping plaatsvinden van de T20-competitie 2016 met de halve finales en aan het einde van de middag de finale. Het belooft een spannende strijd te gaan worden tussen de T20-kampioen vorig jaar ACC, Excelsior'20, HCC en regerend Nederlands kampioen Dosti United. Toegang is gratis.
Het bestuur van VRA nodigt u hierbij van harte uit om gedurende de wedstrijd Nederland tegen Nepal op 13 augustus en/of op de T20 finaledag op 20 augustus samen met ons te komen genieten van topcricket in het Amsterdamse Bos. Dat kan uiteraard als toeschouwer, maar wij kunnen uw hulp als vrijwilliger ook goed gebruiken!

Eric Szwarczynski lid van verdienste – de VRA Walk of Fame
Op zondag 24 juli, na een overtuigende overwinning van het Eerste tegen VOC, heeft het VRA-bestuur drie bijzondere spelers in het zonnetje gezet.
Eric Szwarczynski werd vanwege zijn jarenlange, zeer belangrijke en consistente bijdrage aan de resultaten van VRA 1 benoemd tot Lid van Verdienste. Eric is in eerste instantie op zijn 16e bij Hercules in Utrecht gaan spelen, maar al heel snel heeft hij de overstap naar VRA gemaakt. Inmiddels is hij niet meer weg te denken bij ons Eerste.
Peter Borren en Adeel Raja, die beiden al Lid van Verdienste zijn, werden ook om hun grote bijdrage aan de resultaten van VRA in de schijnwerpers gezet. Hen viel de eer te beurt om, samen met Eric Szwarczynski, hun eigen tegel neer te leggen in de VRA Walk of Fame.
Adeel is al vanaf zijn 12e jaar lid van VRA en, afgezien van een klein uitstapje een aantal jaren geleden, altijd van groot belang geweest in de basis van VRA. En nog steeds; dat laten de cijfers van dit seizoen weer zien.
Peter Borren, onze captain, kwam op zijn 18e bij VRA. Wie herinnert zich niet dat hij als youngster, naast het cricket, regelmatig achter de bar stond om een centje bij te verdienen? Zijn bijdrage aan VRA? Ik denk dat ik daar niet veel over hoef te zeggen: die is overduidelijk en de afgelopen jaren van doorslaggevend belang geweest.

We wensen deze drie VRA-helden, samen met hun team ontzettend veel succes de komende weken en hebben het volste vertrouwen erin dat VRA1 zijn plek in de Topklasse kan behouden. Komt u hen aanmoedigen?

Contributie / Club dues
Hierbij verzoekt het bestuur van VRA een ieder die zijn of haar contributie nog niet (volledig) heeft voldaan dit alsnog spoedig te doen. Indien uw contributie niet voor 1 september 2016 is voldaan is het bestuur mogelijk genoodzaakt om maatregelen te nemen die kunnen resulteren in uitsluiting van competitiewedstrijden volgend seizoen of zelfs beëindiging van het lidmaatschap. Uiteraard hopen wij dat het niet zover hoeft te komen.

VRA Slotdag 2016
Door omstandigheden is het helaas niet mogelijk gebleken om de aangekondigde VRA Familidag op zaterdag 27 augustus te organiseren. Om die reden heeft het bestuur besloten om de jaarlijkse slotdag te verplaatsen naar zondag 28 augustus 2016. Alle leden, zowel senioren als jeugd, en hun familie/vrienden zijn die dag uitgenodigd om naar VRA te komen. Naast de laatste competitiewedstrijden van VRA 2 en VRA 4 zal in overleg met de captains/teamouders gekeken worden welke activiteiten we nog meer op het programma kunnen zetten. Uiteraard is deze dag een uitgelezen mogelijkheid om voor de winterstop de banden aan te halen op de club onder het genot van een drankje en een hapje. De organisatie van deze dag zal in handen liggen van Titia Csanky.
Unfortunately it isn't possible to organize the VRA Familidag on Saturday 27th August as previously announced. For that reason , the Board decided to move the annual closing day to Sunday 28th August 2016. All members, both seniors and youth, and their families/friends are invited to come to VRA that day. Apart from the last league matches of VRA2 and VRA 4 other activities will be discussed with the captains/team-parents. Obviously, this day is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the ties before winter arrives while enjoying a drink and something to eat at the club. The organization of this day will be in the hands of Titia Csanky.

Het reguliere competitieprogramma van de Topklasse is inmiddels gespeeld en de heren van VRA 1 bekleden een gedeelde laatste plaats met VOC. Voor de tweede fase van de competitie spelen de onderste vier teams tegen elkaar om te bepalen wie in een best of three tegen de nummer drie van de Hoofdklasse voor behoud in de Topklasse of degradatie.

Match report Zami 2 vs Hilversum, 18/6

This match report is all about Harry. Why? Well, because Harry was the most prominent player on this day. Continu reading to understand why Harry is so important to the boys of Zami 2. We played against the forceful team of Hilversum, also known as “Maarten’s team’.
The venue that the Zami 2 boys are very familiar with is the so called ‘Harry’s venue’, also known as the ABN AMRO ground. There has always been something magical about it. If it is not for the trustworthy ball absorbing length of the grass then it is surely the grim looks of Harry Hagrid behind the bar.
As tossing is a major skill of Maarten, he won it. And reluctantly he elected to field.
Batting against vacuum has always been a skill. And the Zami Harry’s have that skill. Even on a great cover drive absorbing layer of grass. So Harry Horse and Harry Spits had a tough day driving the score up for a good opening. Harry Spits was caught and bowled after 5 balls and HarryTobias bowled in 1, so Harry Horse had to continu the opening with Harry Hintzen. Harry and Harry were coaching each other nicely through the overs, until Harry Horse (9) fell to a delusional dismissal by umpire Harry. At that moment the score was at 14 runs after just over 5 overs. Not a very good start. Then Harry Chapel stepped in.
His batting spell showed that you can have 116 balls in 114 minutes and score 49 runs from it; not out. Although a strikingly low strike rate, his innings kept us alive. Helped by returning Harry Akkerman (23), some lucky shots from Harry Jones (13) and some useful runs from Harry Mijndert (13), the Zami Harry’s managed to get a decent 154 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets.
Maarten sent in Bill and Harry Krishna to open the bat. Poor Bill encountered the fierce bowling of captain Harry Bob and left on his fourth ball without a run. On the other end, Harry Mijndert had a wonderful innings that didn’t result in any wickets, but neither in many runs. Harry Bob continued to make more victims along the way.
The VRA bowling was great so scoring runs was not something that Hilversum was up to. And after 13.2 overs and only 31 runs Harry Krishna (15) had to make way. This time it was by our magician Red Harry Thomas, with Harry Horse with the crazy hands at silly gully. And Red Harry Thomas was on a roll, so he made it impossible for the Hilversum batsmen to score any decent runs. The whole team was behind its bowlers and it is always a pleasure to see the young Harry’s thrive on the waves of success. Good ol’ Harry Akkerman had returned from a cricket sabbatical and remembered how to catch a ball.
And I should not forget to mention the bowling of young Harry Spits. He was able to take 2 wickets for the loss of only 14 runs. But the list goes on. Harry Chapel was bowling very meticulously with an economy of only 1.86 per over.
No Hilversum batsman was able to get a score of more than 15 runs, so in the thirty-first over Harry Mijndert the last man was run out by a direct hit from Harry Bob.

Match Report VRA1 vs Quick Haag, 10/7 (away)
Match Report - Round 12: Quick Haag vs VRA
Following a crushing loss to Excelsior and then the news of a surprise VOC victory over Dosti, the Fluffers found themselves alone in the wooden spoon position heading into their away match with high flying Quick. It was a daunting assignment, but the Very Reasonable Athletes had a cunning plan...
The Fluffers have played like Jaws on a hunger strike this season: lurking in the depths, sleeping with their eyes open, and ignoring the tidbits on offer in the form of Groen and Wit and Hermes. But no more. A feast on the Domstad Daredevils followed by the debut of the Fluffers Anthem and a close loss to rivals ACC in the first T20 qualification round had reawakened the beast, and Quick were perfectly positioned for an ambush from below.
Skipper Peter "Matting Batting" Borren won the toss and elected to bat, with Eric "Zoolander" Szwarczynski and Mitch "PCL" Lees continuing in T20 mode at the top of the order. After some brief headhunting PCL perished, but Zoolander soldiered on with able support from Ned Gunning. When Ned went after an entertaining 51 deliveries and was followed quickly by Emile "Shenanigans" van den Burg, Borren entered with the match evenly poised at 3/80.
What followed was the display VRA fans have been waiting for all season, as the old guard put on an 80+ partnership to tick a box and put the Fluffers ahead. Zoolander went with the score on 164 and was quickly followed by T-Rex and The Pharmacist, but it didn't deter Borren, who accelerated nicely with the support of Bilal "Boom Boom" Achmad to take the final score to 8/210.

After a lunch Peter Griffin would have been happy with the Fluffs set about defending their above average total. It started well with an early Gunning wicket but danger man Wesley Barresi quickly got underway, taking advantage of some ill-disciplined bowling to race to 50. It was looking ominous until Sadiqulous Mahmood claimed Barresi's vital wicket in a superb second spell, and when Leon "T-Rex" Turmaine was introduced and promptly claimed the wicked of Quick captain Gruijters it was 4/134 and anyone's game.
Quick briefly regained the ascendancy with a solid partnership, but when superstar Szwarczynski produced a spectacular caught and bowled to dismiss the pro and prove that slip catching is the only thing he struggles with VRA were back in front. A Peter Borren run out from outside the circle added further to the Fluffers' confidence, and T-Rex took advantage to claim three quick wickets, leaving Quick needing 18 runs with one wicket in hand.
The final pair cleverly whittled down the runs until Quick's number 11, in a moment of confusion possibly brought about by an earlier head knock, tried to take an unlikely third run after a clip into the deep. Sadiqulous, PCL, and Ned combined brilliantly to have the batsman well short of his ground, and the Fluffers celebrated like they had only won one game all season. The Anthem was immense.
This weekend sees a packed schedule for the Fluffers. Boasting a 1 win, 2 loss record the jongens have qualified for the second qualifying round of the T20 competition (take note ICC) and play Groen & Wit at home on Friday night. On Saturday VRA plays host to Quick after the rain ruined a certain Fluffers win earlier in the season, and on Sunday an away match with ACC rounds out the busy weekend. Pro/bro Fred Klassen is back just in time, and takes the Fluffer's affable Kiwi/munted finger club to two.

Match Report VRA1 vs ACC, 17/7 (away)
Match Report - Round 13: ACC vs VRA
As they cycled down the road to Amsterdam Cricket Club on an aptly named Sunday the Fluffers had one thought in mind: spoil the party. It was ACC's 95th birthday today, and the Very Reasonable Athletes were determined to put a dampener on the celebrations to pick up two points and avenge the narrow T20 grand final loss on their last visit.
Much had already transpired on the weekend thus far. On Friday night Peter "One Shot" Borren had blazed a magnificent century over backward square to set up a T20 quarterfinal with Dosti, while on Saturday an Eric Zoolander/Matthijs Luten century/half century combo of immense quality set up a mat classic that saw the Fluffers just fail to defend their 6/243 against Quick. Despite the narrow loss, performances have taken a marked turn in the right direction, and the addition of exuberant Kiwi Fred "Cleatus" Klaassen has injected not just a dose of quality, but also much needed confidence, enthusiasm and on-field chat.

And so the Fluffers began their preparations at ACC, unaware that disaster was about to strike. Not for the first time this season a late phone call from Quirijn "G1" Gunning spelled trouble, but unlike last time's tactical rain card, this one was serious. After an intense day of cricket the day before, an exhausted Ned had taken part in an ill-advised and overly strenuous warm down, losing his footing during one of the exercises and badly spraining one of his bowling ankles. The news was a seemingly crushing blow to the jongens' chances of knocking off ACC, especially with Cleatus still struggling with his horribly disfigured bowling finger.
The only solution was to bat ACC out of the match, so that's what the resurgent Fluffers set about doing. Mitch "PCL" Lees and Zoolander opened up and negotiated the submarine end and the ACC "bowling" early, but when PCL, Adeel "Cricket Europe" Raja, and Emile "Shenanigans" van den Burg went in quick succession the innings was teetering at 3/61. It didn't matter to "One Shot" Borren though, who strode to the wicket brandishing the mighty Atlas and proceeded to plunder his second century of the weekend.
The square boundaries were far too close to contain Borren, who belted ten fours and four sixes in his 102. The highlight undoubtedly came when the Oompa Loompa offered some unwanted batting coaching and was then promptly smashed over the trees, the creek, and into the chocolate factory for his troubles. Great shot "One Shot"!
A total of 215 on the unrolled mat looked imposing, and so it proved. Sadiqulous and Cleatus exploited the conditions perfectly - aside from a couple of ill-timed no-balls - to send the first three Zulfis back to the sheds without scoring, and when Cleatus trapped JP de Villiers in front ACC were down for the count at 4/34. There was to be no let up for the hosts, as man of the moment Borren stepped up with some "proper cricket bowling", destroying the lower order with figures of 4/18 and ending the ACC challenge at 127 all out.
An exhausting three Fluffers anthem followed, and the vibe was tempered only slightly by the news of a VOC win over HCC and Ned's ankle injury being diagnosed as season-ending. Not to worry though, the Very Reasonable Athletes are finally living up to their name and reputation, and a continuation of this form will see them sitting comfortably in mid-table by season's end.
Next round's clash against fellow strugglers VOC looms as season defining. With only two points separating the teams the winner will take a distinct advantage into the last round of matches. With Cricket Europe predicting a tie in a dog fight this match is anyone's call. In addition, the Fluffers have scraped into the T20 quarter finals, and head to Dosti on Friday night hoping to keep the dream alive.

Match report VRA 3 vs HMS, 17/7 (away)
Cricket is and always will be a funny game. After having lost several games in a row, of which I only played a few due to musical activities, I noticed a huge change in spirit of the team. Having played in many different squads these past years I found that many of these teams achievements were partially aided by a positive momentum. This is something we create together as a team and I saw this happen today.
I shall use first names as I don’t know all the last names of the Titans that played today. (Forgive me for any misspellings.)
Rohit, the captain for this game (as Thomas was in the U.K. for the VRA ZAMI tour 2016) won the toss and chose to bat first. Rohit chose a gameplay where the two openers try and force the score up by mixing up short singles with well timed strokes along the ground. Textbook cricket, and so it began.
Arsal opened the batting with Sud. Sud got dismissed quite early in the game, and Avnish then took over from and built up a very nice partnership, until Avnish got out. Teun, Sharad and Qumail were the others that had a small partnership with Arsal, who scored an intelligent 70 runs and all this good work of the team gave us a total of 131 runs, on an old baseballfield next to a cowfield in the middle of a soccerclub territory, next to a dogtraining facility. If you get it, please explain it to me. But we were there. And the grass was too long for the ball to run to the non-existing ropes so 131 seemed like a defendable total.
After lunch in the old scoring-shack we saw a crowd of around 15 people had appeared out of nowhere to come watch their local cricketclub HMS. We felt old times revive ( back in the old days when the Dutch cricket grounds were filled with people).
We chose to start the bowling with Sharad and Thijs, to have a pacey swing bowler on one end (Sharad) and on the other side a seambowler (Thijs) to just land it on the irregular bouncing pitch. That went well! As we were all playing positive cricket, positive things happened! Sharad left the batsmen clueless with his clever variation choices of balls to bowl. Thijs (who finally has his run-up right) variated his speed every now and then and it paid off! Then Rohit chose to have the speed taken off the ball and riddle the batsman with Houdini balls (Qumail), who partnered up with Avnish at one point, and we had them in a tight situation. Wickets were falling like old men without rubbers underneath their walking stick. At one point HMS was 5 wickets down for 60 runs, but unfortunately the opponents captain dramaticly increased HMS’s score when he hit several big sixes in the trees, like Vimanas taking off from the impredictable airplane landing strip HMS provides. We were so close to a victory, but our momentum turned the other way and unfortunately there still are no fielders in the sky, so he hit it hard and he hit it high.
The batting and fielding performance was all over very very well executed, and although we lost this one, we won so much today!

Match report Zami2 vs Hilversum, 23/7 (away)
ZAMI 2 DENDERT DOOR RICHTING POULEWINST!

afgelopen zaterdag, 23 juli, heeft VRA zami 2 een goede stap gezet richting winst in de illustere zami poule 3. Net als de VRA zaterdag eersteklassers heerst ook zami 2 in haar respectievelijke poule, en weet zelfs bijna verloren potten naar haar hand te zetten! In een zinderende (en ook zinderend warme) wedstrijd wist VRA zich terug te knokken uit een haast uitzichloze situatie.
Na een voor VRA moeizame eerste innings stond Hilversum op een riante 191 voor 6. Vooral B. Harie wist vaak de boundary te vinden op het snelle veld. Ook Bill Marsden en Guido Schluter brachten mooie scores op het bord. VRA kon in het begin de score laag houden, maar moest toestaan de Hilversum toch steeds meer runs in de scoring app wist te vergaren. Het solide fielden van onder andere Arthur Vreeke kon dat niet stoppen. Een paar hoogtepunten waren de mooie vangen van de jonge Thomas Debaig en herintreder Christoph Bekedam.
VRA wist dat het aan de bak moest in de tweede innings en dat de wickets behouden moesten blijven. Dat waren ook de instructies van captain Bob. Helaas viel Thomas Spits al in de eerste innings uit, omdat de VRA scorers hem afleiden met voetbalachtig gejoel (waarvoor zij zich op hun beurt diep schaamden). Bernhardt Steinhof en uw aller two times Tony namen de instructies van el skipperoo serieus en groeven zich in, waarbij beiden nog een aantal mooie ballen buiten de touwen sloeg. De score bleef echter achter en er moest iets versneld worden. Na de wickets van herr Bernhardt en uncle two times ontstond een mooi partnership tussen de nachtburgemeerste Capel en verloren zoon Bekedam, de laatste bleek na tien jaar het batten niet verleerd en liet verbluffende techniek zien. Een schok ging dan ook door het VRA kamp toen Bekedam gebowld werd na 22 runs. Na 17 overs stond VRA pas op 80 runs met al 5 wickets down, en dat was zeker niet in lijn met het doel. Ook tegen zijn eigen verwachting in was Van der Spek in staat om het tij te keren. Capel en Spek besloten Hilversums goede bowlers uit te zitten en te scoren op de mindere goden. Dit werkte en al gauw wist Hilversum niet meer waar ze het moest zoeken: de ballen vlogen op alle plekken over de boundary. De achterstand werd in 16 overs omgezet in winst, vooral door de snelle scores van Van der Spek, die zijn maiden 50 haalde, onder andere met een zeer overtuigende zes over cows corner. Capel liet Hilversum ook niet met rust en scoorde snelle runs op alle graden van het infield wat leidde tot een prachtig partnership van 112.
Met vier punten los van de nummer 2 en nog drie wedstrijden te gaan lijkt VRA inderdaad op poulewinst af te stevenen. Nog even focus houden en de clash of the woods op 13 augustus zou zomaar eens een kampioensfeestje kunnen worden!

Zami tour to Dorset
Nadat de Dames een succesvolle tour naar Canterbury hebben afgesloten (verslag volgt nog) zijn onze Zami's afgereisd naar Dorset om daar zes wedstrijden tegen de lokale villages te spelen. Een 'selectie' van maar liefst 21 tourgangers hebben van de Engelse hittegolf mogen genieten, maar wisten helaas enkel de eerste wedstrijd te winnen ondanks de mooie prestaties van individuele spelers.
