How's That verschijnt tijdens het cricketseizoen wekelijks
Voorwoord
Nu augustus achter ons ligt, is ook het cricket seizoen op zijn eind aan het lopen. Wij kunnen samen terugkijken op een seizoen dat vele hoogtepunten kende. Zo grepen de VRA Dames op de laatste competitiedag de nationale titel, terwijl VRA Heren 1 er net naast greep en voor het tweede jaar op rij runner-up werd. VRA2 promoveert volgend jaar naar de Eerste klasse door kampioen te worden in de Overgangsklasse A en VRA3 bleef helaas steken op de tweede plek om ook weer naar die Overgangsklasse net te missen. Ook de andere herenteams op zaterdag en zondag hebben mooie partijen gewonnen, maar omdat er ook helaas wedstrijden verloren gingen werden er daar verder enkel noteringen in de middenmoot behaald.
Ook de jeugd heeft een succesvol seizoen, wat nog niet helemaal op zijn einde is omdat er komende zondag nog een aantal wedstrijden op het programma staan. De U9 en U11 spelen voor de allerlaatste maal thuis en de U17 combinatie met ACC heeft het weten te schoppen tot de landelijke finale op VCC. Ik nodig u uit om alle kids te komen aanmoedigen dit weekend!
Graag maak ik u er ook op attent dat er naast de bovengenoemde cricketwedstrijden voor de jeugd ook een speciaal golfevent op VRA wordt georganiseerd op zondag 16 september door Kids4Golf. Heeft u (klein)kinderen in de leeftijd van 8 t/m 12 jaar, dan zijn die van harte welkom. Ook vriendjes en vriendinnetjes zijn uitgenodigd voor dit gratis evenement. Meer informatie treft u verderop in deze HT.
Ook maak ik van de gelegenheid gebruik om de VRA Slotdag officieel aan te kondigen. Het programma treft u verderop in deze HT. Het bestuur roept iedereen op om op 22 september tussen 10 uur en 14 uur te helpen met de laatste opruimwerkzaamheden en verwacht van ieder team dat er minimaal 2 spelers afgevaardigd worden (voor de helpers staat daarna uiteraard een broodje klaar).
Tot slot sta ik graag stil bij de enorme inzet van onze vrijwilligers afgelopen seizoen, met name tijdens de internationale events. Het VRA bestuur heeft van zowel de ICC als de KNCB veel complimenten gekregen voor de inspanningen die zijn geleverd. In het bijzonder dank aan iedereen die heeft geholpen als ground crew: Nigel, Mees, Ben, Vikram, Maxwell, Frederik, Babal, Reinout, Thomas, Femke, Miled, Haseeb, Christijn, Vivian, Maurits, Mara, Nina, Katie, Caroline, Sally, Birgite, Andrew, Alec, Dan, Qumail, Zilan, Willem, Niels, Christiaan, Asad, Maninder, Himanshu, Amil, Peter en Paul. Op bevrijdingsdag zag het er tijdens de openingswedstrijd van het seizoen nog zo somber uit. Alleen Ben kon met 51 runs nog enigszins imponeren, maar de 124 runs die VRA scoorde leken bij lange na niet voldoende voor de overwinning op Quick (Hg). Dat het toch nog spannend werd kwam dor het goede bowlen van Viv (3 voor 28 in 10), een schaars wapenfeit van onze nieuwe aanwinst. Toen ook de tweede wedstrijd werd verloren, nu van Excelsior, begonnen de kopjes een beetje te hangen. Het was dat George als nummer 10 boven zichzelf uitsteeg met 57 runs anders was het totaal wel heel erg pover geweest. Tegen ACC was er een opleving te bespeuren (Dan 113 not out), maar een match later was het al weer kommer en kwel. 148 runs bleken niet genoeg voor de overwinning tegen Sparta.
Maar ziedaar. Waar zelfs de meest verstokte supporter niet meer op had gerekend gebeurde toch. VRA verrees uit zijn as. Tegen Punjab leverden Dan (78), Pete (105) en Leon (41) prima prestaties af en het totaal van 328 voor 8 was meer dan hoopgevend. Toen ook HBS, HCC en Dosti er aan moesten geloven was een plaats in het linker rijtje een feit. De nederlaag tegen het ijzersterke VOC die volgde bleek een tijdelijke dip. VRA was opeens een titelpretendent. Aan het begin van de tweede seizoenshelft werd de nederlaag van 5 mei tegen Quick (Hg) rechtgezet en daarna was het gloria alom. Hoogtepunten genoeg. Ik noem de overwinning met tien wickets tegen Sparta en de fenomenale 153 van Ben tegen Punjab. Dat de wedstrijd tegen HCC verloren ging was een domper waardoor de titelkansen vervlogen, maar na twee slotoverwinningen kon VRA1 toch terugzien op een fantastisch seizoen. Dan, Peter en Ben excelleerden met het bat en Quirijn, Adeel en Pete bowlden de sterren van de hemel. Als supporter was het afgezien van de start van het seizoen genieten geblazen. Alhoewel mijn oproep in mei om meer toeschouwers op dorre bodem viel, betoonde de harde kern van de K-side onder de bezielende leiding van Floris zich trouw. Meer dan eens konden we ver voor het einde van een wedstrijd behaaglijk achterover leunen in het besef dat de overwinning ons nauwelijks nog kon ontgaan. Zondag 16-9-2018: Kids4Golf op VRA!
Kijk of hoe jouw battingstijl helpt bij het wegslaan en putten van een golfbal.
Ben je tussen de 8 en 12, doe mee met het Tiende Kids4Golf Toernooi in het Amsterdamse Bos! Op zondag 16 september krijg je de kans om gratis kennis te maken met golf. Bij ons op V.R.A. kan je een rondje van 4 holes spelen. Echt heel leuk én er zijn mooie prijzen te winnen.
Op zondag 16 september organiseert Kids4Golf, met hulp van ANWB en Jumbo Golf, haar jaarlijkse golftoernooi. Jij en jouw vriendjes zijn van harte uitgenodigd. Je vriendjes hoeven geen lid te zijn van VRA of cricket te spelen. Neem vriendjes van school mee. Helemaal goed.
Jullie spelen dus met en tegen elkaar in een ronde van 4 holes. Er zijn prachtige prijzen te winnen voor de winnaars: een golfcursus op Golfclub Olympus en een schitterende beginnersgolfset, beschikbaar gesteld door Jumbo Golf.
In totaal nemen de lessen en het spel twee en een half uur in beslag. Er kan worden gekozen uit verschillende aanvangstijden en je hoeft alleen sportieve schoenen mee te nemen.
Natuurlijk blijft cricket altijd onze eerste sport, maar toch leuk om te zien of je de nieuwe Tiger Woods bent! Geef je snel op want het aantal deelnemers is beperkt. Meer informatie en inschrijving op Kids4Golf.nl.
VRA Slotdag 2018 - zaterdag 22 september
Aan alles komt een eind, zo ook dit cricketseizoen. Wij sluiten dit jaar graag samen met u en nodigen u uit voor de Slotdag. Het programma van de dag is als volgt:
10:00 - 14:00 uur: laatste klussen om het clubhuis en terrein klaar voor de winter. Van ieder seniorenteam worden minimaal 2 vrijwilligers verwacht en vele hande maken licht werk! Voor alle helpers staat daarna een broodje klaar.
15:00 - 17:00 uur: afsluiting van het jeugdseizoen met uitreiking van de jaarlijkse jeugdprijzen. Komt kijken naar het aanstormend talent van de toekomst!
18:00 - 21:30 uur: borrel voor alle leden, donateurs en vrienden van VRA waarbij de jaarlijkse prijzen voor de senioren worden uitgereikt, met aansluitend een mogelijkheid om een hapje mee te eten. Dit zal tevens in het teken staan van de vorderingen van onze plannen voor het clubhuis en uitbouw.
Floris Kappelle toegevoegd aan de VRA Walk of Fame
Het is lastig geheimen te bewaren in een kleine gemeenschap als VRA, maar voor deze eer was dat maar mooi gelukt! Toen Peter van Gulik vorige week zaterdag de aanwezige leden en Floris Kappelle in het bijzonder uitnodigde om het terras te verlaten en beneden te verzamelen, wist vrijwel niemand wat er ging komen. Maar toen het gat in de grond zichtbaar was, legde iedereen al snel de puzzel. Met prachtig lovende woorden van Peter van Gulik kreeg ook Floris Kappelle een tegel op de VRA Walk of Fame!
En hoewel het op deze zaterdag vooral de Zamis waren die de onthulling vierden, geldt deze waardering vanuit de club natuurlijk ook voor al zijn andere inzet, al jarenlang, of eigenlijk decennialang voor VRA, buiten de zaterdagmiddag. Zowel officieel, bv als secretaris in het bestuur, maar ook onofficieel, achter de schermen en minder zichtbaar. Hoewel dat laatste bij Floris natuurlijk moeilijk is voor te stellen....
En denk eraan, Floris Kappelle en de andere legenden die hier hun tegel hebben liggen, laten niet over zich heen lopen! Dus bij uw entree, zie de tegels, lees de namen, loop er omheen of tussendoor, en denk aan alles wat deze mensen voor onze club hebben gedaan en in veel gevallen nog steeds doen. Die eer hebben zij dubbel en dwars verdiend!

VRA wint met 122 runs
Een fraai slotakkoord
Dat was nog eens een goed begin van Vikram en Dan. Na twaalf overs noteren we 39 oor 0. Het kan slechter. Maar of dat nog niet goed genoeg is marcheren de twee VRA-openers moedig voorwaarts en zeven overs verder, als de drinks het veld op worden gebracht, zijn zij nog steeds onafscheidelijk (81 voor 0). Pas bij 97 komt de breakthrough voor VOC als Dan een edge in de richting van de slips stuurt waar Max O’Dowd de bal na een mooie duik boven het gras weggrist (97 voor 1). Als er 122 runs op het bord staan bereikt Vikram zijn eerste half century in de topklasse, een memorabel feit dat hem een hartelijk applaus oplevert. Met Ben Cooper aan zijn zijde versnelt hij en pas als hij 74 runs heeft gescoord moet hij het veld ruimen. Emile en Pete voegen daarna weinig runs aan de score toe maar Ben gaat onverdroten voort en bereikt zijn 50 in 53 ballen. Samen met Eric gaat hij op weg naar een meer dan behoorlijk totaal. Zijn 75 in 63 mag er zijn. Uiteindelijk komt VRA uit op 273 voor 5 (Eric, 49 not out).
Nadat Quirijn razendsnel twee wickets heeft genomen (4 voor 2 in 3overs) is het de beurt aan van Van Baren en Edwards om voor de VOC iets terug te doen. Bij 82 voor 2 lijken ze aardig op weg naar het VRA-totaal en bij 120 voor 2 ziet het er voor ons dreigend uit. Maar daarna volgt er een collaps van groot kaliber en omdat de twee laatste VOC-batslieden om uiteenlopende redenen niet kunnen aantreden komt het einde bij 151 voor 8. Good old Adeel blijkt met 3 voor 29 in 7 eens te meer the pick of the bowling. Al met al een fraai slotakkoord van een geslaagd seizoen.

VRA2 was preparing for the most important win of the season and their 8th on the trot. This win would seal their Champions spot without having to worry about other teams’ results. And boy they did want to win this! Trained 3 times in the leading up week, discussed endlessly about the playing 11, etc etc. Special mention for Ashwin Oppu who changed his personal vacation, booked an earlier flight and came back to play.
VOC2 won the toss and put VRA2 in to bat. It didn’t start well for VRA2, losing a wicket in the very first over. Then some resistance from the next two batters saw the score reach 30-3 in 10 overs. And then walked in Keshava Lal and changed the course of the game. A few watchful overs later, he started hitting it all around the park. Vijay (captain) held fort at the other end. These two had a mind blowing partnership of 151 off just some 22-23 overs and then Vijay got out for a very well made 56. But it was not over yet, with Adil Ashraff playing a blinding innings of 44 off 17 balls pushing the final score to 285-5. Keshava got run out in the last over of the innings after scoring his 3rd century (yes 3rd!) of the season. He scored 132 precious runs.
VOC2 changed their batting order, sending their hitters up to try and chase this mammoth score. But they had Ashish Thapa in their way. He ran through their top order with a 5-33 performance. R.Vos, C. Smith and R.R. Bannik chipped in with decent scores but it was too much to chase in the end. VOC2 got all out for 181 in the 33rd over and VRA2 were the champions!
Another special mention for our groundsman Paul Polak. He came all the way to VOC to support us, and then helped us celebrate on the VRA club house.
It was a perfect conclusion for a great season for VRA2! Looking forward to Eerste Klasse next year!
Season Summary:
2018 was the most successful season so far for this bunch of guys. Having played for more than 5 years and started at Division 3, it is quite big achievement for the guys to reach de Eerste Klasse. Having been placed in a difficult pool in OV class and starting off with 2 losses to begin with, few would have expected VRA2 to finish on the top as a clear winner. We went into the season with a lot of preparation and practice sessions. In addition to all the preparation, our objective for the season was very clear: to play good cricket and to enjoy each other's company and not care about winning or losing. Early into the season, we figured out what is going to work for us and the areas we should improve. We soon realized that our middle order batting and spin bowling would be our core strength. Most of the games, we went with a clear strategy with each one of us knowing exactly what their role was. This started to pay off mid way into the season and we ended up winning 9 games in a row to finish on top of the table. Looking back, we ticked most of the boxes and each of us had a memorable season.
Match report: U17 semi final 2/9
On Sunday morning VOC travelled to Amsterdam to face the combined ACC / VRA team in the U17s semi-final.
Bating first ACC/VRA were in some early trouble at 21/2 before a great rescue and recovery effort from the two VRA batters - Udit Nashier and Debrup Dasgutpa. As he has done all season Udit took his time in building a base for the team before opening up later in his innings to score freely. Udit's 55 runs included three 4s and one sweetly struck 6. Debrup played a similarly strong innings and demonstrated an ability to score off nearly every ball - including seven 4s in making 58. Both batters retired together after sharing a 3rd wicket partnership of 135. The ACC/VRA total of 203 from 30 overs was always going to be a tough assignment for VOC which became immediately more difficult thanks to Ashir Abid (2/15) striking with the 2nd ball of the innings. Wickets came a regular intervals and before too long VOC were 37/6 - which included wickets for Alec Pulver (1/11 from 3) and Hasaan Mirza (1/18 from 3) and tight bowling from Zamaan Khan (0/8 in 3). Opposition eventually bowled out for 94 after 26 overs.
Next and final step for the boys is to travel to VCC on Sunday for the final against VCC. It's sure to be a tough match and we have played two tight matches earlier in the season. Do wish us well.

VRA Zami 1 vs. Ajax Zami
Saturday 25th August 2018
After a morning of weak ‘What’s App’ banter discussing the weather and the fact the Zami 2 game against Punjab was cancelled, it was amazing that so many VRA ZAMI players turned up at all last Saturday at 1230. As it transpired, those that braved hail-storms were rewarded with a strange sunny micro-climate around the VRA ground. The work of ‘Cricket-Gods’ or Floris Kappelle (inaugurated later that day into VRA immortality)? None could tell.
With AJAX ZAMI’s arrival, it was decided that a 20:20 would ensue with a selected ZAMI 1 side. The rest of VRA ZAMIs would split to play a ‘Not-So-Friendly’ together. With Louis Collignon demoted by his children’s babysitter, Ewoud de Man stepped up to Captain ZAMI 1 and immediately selected all the clearly best players from the VRA squad. It was about this time that our esteemed Grounds-Man decided he would rather allow a herd of elephants on his main square than a pack of scrapping ZAMIs and told us to **** off to the other pitch. This meant the ‘Not-So-Friendly’ squad were further relegated to the nets whilst selected ZAMI 1 got on with the real business of the day.
And what a business it was to start off. ‘New Kid’, Nick Goodchild, got lost finding a square no more than 20 metres from the main ground and joined his team in the field half way through the first over. Meanwhile ‘Perpetually Late’ Prasuk got a fly in his eye or something and rolled up just as AJAX were losing their first wicket. Professional first impressions abounded.
Thankfully, Andrew Pulver and Sud Sharma (taking an important early wicket) were ‘keeping-up-appearances’ with a solid opening spell of bowling. Fielding was tight and well-regulated by ‘Edward The Man’. Definitely worthy of 1 x self-awarded Kappelle point later that day. Wouldn’t you agree? Anyone? No? Oh well…..
Next up with the ball was Prasun Banerjee, ever-solid and keeping things to 9 off 2 by innings close. Meanwhile, Prasuk Jain came on (time) at the other end and after some redirection from the VRA captain, as well as finally removing the fly from his eye, started to find his line and length. Now here’s a funny thing…one of these two took a wicket. The score-book says it was Jain. Banerjee claims scorer-error. The debate raged later in the club-house. Clearly the means of dismissal forgettable enough to form any firm conclusion! To be continued we’re sure but we’ll leave it there for now.
Anyway, back on the square, with AJAX struggling to find any traction to their innings, Freddy ten Kate and Chris Harvey were asked to provide. This proved a successful change with the former finding good ‘pop’ immediately (and a particularly satisfying ‘Wind-Milling Stump’ wicket) whilst the latter had the pick of the days figures with 2 for 8 off 2 overs. Some very tidy stuff from the 2nd most important Brit on the field. One Harvey wicket was a sharp take behind the stumps by the nimble Theo Lindemann - whose earlier run-out attempt definitely did not resemble a drunk rhino chasing a mouse.
Meanwhile, Nick ‘New-Kid’ Goodchild continued to make strong first impressions by taking a leak behind the side-screen between overs. Having mis-timed his need, he reappeared late to the field just as the ball approached his Fine-Leg fielding position. This gave the clear impression that he had, in actual fact, simply been hiding from AJAX batsmen. Luckily everyone (including umpires) understood that cheating was impossible by an Englishman and the innings continued in good spirits.
Following some admirable support spells from Floris Kappelle and Sander Kempen, and a late surge by AJAX, the twenty overs ended with an eminently chase-able 109 with the loss of 6 wickets.
After tea, the job of opening the VRA response fell to Nick Goodchild and Freddy ten Kate. In attempt to redeem earlier indiscretions, Goodchild began by offering up a couple of catches to AJAX for good measure. Thankfully they were put down. Such luck did not extend to Freddy who was unfortunate to pad a good delivery onto his sticks early on.
In stumbled Jain, who began by ‘pinch-hitting’ a few and telling Goodchild to “chill-out”. He then realized it was a 20:20 and opened up with some well-timed strokes whilst Nick began to get his eye-in and cart a few about. This included a boundary clearance over the bowlers head which seemed to entertain some of the older VRA members on the boundary. Together they put on a partnership of 51 until Goodchild was out to a younger member of the AJAX team who was apparently athletic enough to stump his own bowling according to the score-book. Once Prasuk eventually fell to a beautifully executed Yorker by AJAX’s first change (no flies in sight), it was down to VRA’s composed Captain (alongside a couple of exemplary boundaries) and Sud Sharma to steer the ship home.
However, a final twist occurred when, with one run needed to win, Sud Sharma was caught. This sent the already de-padding Theo Lindemann to the crease to much applause from the sincerely supportive and already-drinking VRA Zami masses on the boundary. Theo stood firm however. Yet it fell, appropriately, to Ewoud to hit the winning runs to seal what always felt like an inevitable victory for ZAMI 1.
Congrats to all and thanks to those who organized an excellent end-of-season meal in VRA clubhouse afterwards. A fitting end to a solid day of strong, albeit damp, cricket.

Play off 2 at VRA VRA ladies beat VCC
A beautiful Saturday midday, eventhough we tried to play it a few hours earlier it was fun to arrive at a funfilled VRA. People all around, a group of people dressed up super fancy and the top 4 women’s teams that are competing for the Championship. Quick Haag, VCC, Ajax and us. We were playing on the 2nd ground against VCC, the other teams were off to the 3rd ground cause the Zami’s and the Crocodiles were gonna play on the main pitch later that day. Huge hands up for having kncb provided umpires for the first time this season. Eventhough we were lucky a few games to have Ed’s umpiring skills (who was now cheering on his son Thijs who was doing the Ironman in Denmark. Quite the achievement!) it was very nice to be able to focus on the playing itself.
Denise captain of VCC won the toss and decided to field first. Time to put our pads on, we had quite a strong batting line up. I decided to open with Git. Was super excited to bat, but then I got bowled on the 3rd ball. Boo, Clare is a left arm over yorker pacer. Git and Miranda took over, they knew what to do with her. After 74 quick runs on the board, Git’s wicket fell for 26 runs and Sally came in. Watching those two batting together was magic. With the total on 166 Miranda came out with an asswhooping 103 runs. Big 6‘s in there too. That makes two centuries the last two games, have I said how happy we are with you Miranda :). Sally stayed in only to leave the field overs later with 51 beautiful runs. Lot hit a few more and the rest played out the rest of the overs but VCC was bowling ever so tightly so the runrate went down but we still got to an amazing total of 212 runs for 9. Go team, so proud! Our opponent has some very strong batsmen, but this looks like a total we can defend if we play our cards right! Yummy lunch with baked goodies from my mum. Big hands up to VRA for hosting and feeding so many teams in one day.
So the reason why we wanted to play sooner is that we didn’t have enough players at first cause some are on holidays and I had to leave early. I ended up staying till midway the second innings delaying delaying haha and we were very happy to have Anzelle there. A lovely Dutch speaking lady from South Africa who got in touch with us a few weeks back, she has great energy and her fielding was very impressive and I’ve been told she was doing good in the nets with bowling aswell. Hopefully we’ll see her weekly next season :) She btw fits right in with her bright colored shoes!
Me and Miranda opened the fielding innings and kept the runrate down nicely, then Sjoukje went 1st change. I just bowled out my overs in one go cause I had to go asap, but didn’t want to leave without putting some work in. Just when Babette was really going for it she got bowled for 25 runs, with the total on 34. Their overseas Clare came in and I bowled her for 2. Then Sjoukje caught and bowled batsmen 4. Allthewhile Denise was batting like a pro, I was standing on square and accidentally started to cheer her on :) Then Sjoukje bowled another wicket ( and then it was drinks and I left - so now I’m freestyling the rest of the matchreport) I left the team in good hands in charge of Sally with the total on 46-4 after 20 overs. Which means VCC needed a runrate of 8,35 the last 20 overs.
Very happy to see they ran out Denise who was batting and running so steady and came of the field with a quick 69 runs with the total on 131. Sally stumped the next wicket on Lot’s bowling, Marloes was on a role with 36 runs, so it was a good wicket for the team for sure! Lot bowled one more wicket and VCC got to 176 for 7 in 40 overs. Sjoukje had 2-36-9, Lot 2-41, me 2-27-10. Miranda kept her runrate nice and low. Kanishka, Haas and Fleurtje also bowled but I wasn’t there, but I bet they did well with flying around balls and possible catchmoments to keep the team on their toes considering they were fielding with 10. Big thanks to Sal for taking over <3 Soooooo we won. YAY!!! Go team - go team - doing a happydance! Big win for the team!
This means that the game next week is a decider. The final playoff. We play an away game at 11.00 at Ajax Leiden. Ajax is unbeaten so far, when not if we win next week it’s all about runrates of the last few games. This Wednesday we’re gonna train hard and we’re absolutely going for it next weekend! Liefs VRA dames
11th of August VRA faces Quick Haag in The Hague for the 1st Play off.
While in Amsterdam it was rainy and cloudy, Den Haag presented us with a sunny day. What it also presented us is the square artificial ground with concrete boundary and lines on the ground for a pitch. Haha, ideally we would’ve played this game at home, but QuickHaag had -like us- a lot of people that were away for the holidays so had to play at home to make it possible for everyone to make it to the game.
Quick decided to bat first and we wanted to field so that toss worked out nicely! Their captain for the day, Roos, batted so well she made 71 runs. It took us a long time and a magical ball bowled by Sjoukje to get her out. So as a captain, I think we dropped a few too many catches in the first few overs and as people often say ‘catches win matches‘ and dropping a few too many where it could’ve given the game a competely diffrent outcome. Having said that, if we had a one person team we would have won. Someone was really catching everything that came her way. Sjoukje had an astonnishing 3 catches on point!!! #fieldinggoals
In short our fielding innings we worked hard, but they made it to 209 runs in 40 overs for 7 wickets. Sjouk en ik opende de innings. Sjouk had 1-33 ( met belangrijk wicket) ik had 2-27 in 10. Miranda came in with a quick and very economical 6 overs. Halfway through the innings Lotte who was wicketkeeping with a broken finger(dedication, love it) swopped positions with Miranda. Meanwhile Meike was on fire with her fielding. Kanishka bowled from the other side with a few excellent dangerious balls in there, Lot and Anne took over. Lot took 2 wickets, Anne bowled a few amazing overs and then Annefleur came on and took a wicket with her magical bowling. Sjouk and me came back on to end it tightly. As I said before, they made it to a whooping 209 runs. It was a small ground, we had a decent batting order so all was still possible!
Thanks Quick Haag for the amazing lunch! Nomnom yumminness. Time to head back to the field with our bats on. “The pads are on” Git and Kanishka opened, sadly we saw Git back a little too soon. Kanishka stayed in and Sjoukje came in. Quick was bowling very tight so we had to really look for the runs and didn’t have the luxury to wait for the lose balls. The ladies were working hard, Sjoukje left her wicket and we saw our Hermes DVS import Miranda go in. What an amazing batswoman!
Let me take a moment to say how very happy and excited we are that she’s supporting us in the 40 over competition this year. Hermes sadly doesn’t have a team this year allthough they mixed with Excelsior in the T20 competition. They’re trying hard to get a team back on their feet. As long as they don’t have a team to compete, the Hermes ladies can join other teams for the season. We were exctatic, that Miranda with her good energy and all her cricket knowledge and skills, is joining us for a bunch of games especially when we had to miss a few of our big hitters a few games this year. Back to the game. Last week we showed that we can all contribute to the batting order. One of the opponents said “you’re batting order never ends, everyone can bat!”. However, this game, we didn’t live up to that. Miranda got in and with first Kanishka to support her she was quickely followed by Anne, me, Meike, Katie, Lot, Lotte and Fleur she made a kicking ass 111 runs!! With 10runs to make of the last 2 overs it was close and very possible, but we didn’t have enough wickets left and the game ended in the 38th over.
Looking back I can see how I could’ve made some different choices. But then again we also should’ve gotten those catches which we normally take. So eventhough we tried hard, gotten many chances and put big effort in and got amazing wickets. We didn’t manage to get a first win this round of the playoffs. So we came off a bit sad to be honest. But extremely impressed by Miranda’s batting and Sjoukje’s catching.
I think we are now extra motivated to slay next week!! Some Pete magic coming training and bring on the other play-offs.

Wedstrijdverslag VRA Dames – R&W Dames, 4 augustus
Ietwat onderbezet, maar vol goede moed betraden 8 VRA Dames op 4 augustus het prachtige hoofdveld van VRA om tegen Rood & Wit Dames te spelen. Dit is altijd een lastige wedstrijd en zeker met een wat kleiner team; upside van snel verliezen zou zijn dat we dan nog wel even naar de stad konden gaan om een biertje te drinken bij de Gaypride.
Captain Nathalie Hennis verloor de toss, maar was alsnog tevreden met de uitkomst – we begonnen met batten! Fleur en Katie openden met een aantal snelle runs. Helaas ging Katie bowled, waarna Sjoukje het veld betrad. Ook Fleur en Sjoukje ruimden op een gegeven moment het veld, waarna de echte helden van de eerste innings hebben laten zien hoe je moet batten. Anne (43) en Nathalie (53) hebben goed aan het totaal gebouwd. Met nog wat mooie runs van Lot en Lotte (beide not out) en de altijd vriendelijke extras kwam ons totaal bij rust op 168. Niet slecht, maar zou het genoeg zijn?
Even een kort taalkundig intermezzo: ‘An opening batsman who is dismissed on the first ball of a team's innings is said to be out for a diamond duck, platinum duck, or royal duck, depending upon the regional usage.’
Als wij u vertellen dat Nathalie bij de derde bal van de tweede innings haar hattrick bal mocht bowlen, dan begrijpt u denk ik allen wat er met batsman 1 & 3 van R&W is gebeurd na de rust; platinum, diamond of royal… wij waren er blij mee. Deze tegenslag hield R&W echter niet tegen om gestaag aan hun totaal te werken – en zorgde voor een spannende wedstrijd! Echter, netjes bowlen van Nathalie (3 wickets), Lot (3 wickets), Sjoukje (2 wickets), Anne (1 wicket) en Haas (steady bowling) en onze subfielders van R&W en het neefje van Lotte – hebben gelukkig voor winst voor de thuisploeg gezorgd! Bij over 39.3 was de wedstrijd beslecht door all out bij R&W voor een totaal van 147.
Al met al een memorabele dag met goed cricket, veel gelach, en een heerlijke carrot cake van mama Hennis! Tot slot een big thankyou aan Ed voor het umpen en we hopen je snel weer als onze umpire te mogen begroeten 😊

28th of July VRA ladies go GroenGeel during 2nd innings by too yummy lunch. As we were making it down to Wassenaar-Wassenaar-Wassenaaaar we were driving away from the clouds into the rain. The weather was kind as we only started half an hour later than planned. Tess won the toss and decided to bat first.
Sjoukje and Gwen opened the bowling, they did so well with a beautiful 2-16-8 for Gwen and 3-17-9 for Sjoukje. I went first change and also kept it tight with 4-7 - 6.3 with accidental bouncers on Tess. Who by the way got 92 not out, amazing to see, but less fun for some bowling figures eventhough lots of the balls went up which creates possible catches. Lotte and Sal got beautiful catches. We also had a nice run out, team work! Groengeel got to 143 all out in 34.4 overs. This lunch, mygod, it was so good, it had it all. People wanted to know the batting order just to see how much they could eat haha. Gwen and Maartje opened the batting innings. They quickly got to 45 and it was time for Anne to take Gwen’s place, after she too made 14 runs Sjoukje took her place. Together with Maartje 67* Sjoukje 19* batted out the innings and we got to 144 runs for 2 in 23.4.
Awesome work ladies!! We’re also looking better and better in the field, so fun to see how we’re all growing as cricketers and so good to see our youngsters like in this game Gwen shine. And it’s cool to see Anne grow as a cricketer after a year of absence.
Next week we play a game with 8 people the way it looks right now, with a few prominent players missing. Fingers crossed for that, till next week!

The season of VRA3
VRA 3 (formerly known as VRA 2) came out of a tough season in 2017, ultimately resulting in relegation to Klasse 2B. This was not the situation we wanted to be in and we believed it was also the situation we shouldn't be in given the enormous amount of talent and quality in our squad. 2018's goal was to rebuild the team, establish continuity in selection, and simply have fun. We believed that if we would focus on these aspects that the wins we follow automatically. We succeeded, finishing 2nd in the league and narrowly missed promotion back into the Overgangsklasse.
Ultimately we won 10 out of 14 games in a comfortable and convincing manner. As always the start of our 2018 season showed a very different team and performance than the end. Where at the start one would classify us mostly as a bowling team, always looking to bowl first, we exited the season as a more balanced team, showing great performances both on the bowling and batting side. Throughout the season we saw people step-up, join and do extremely well.
At risk of missing people worth mentioning, I would like to point out a couple of people who have contributed greatly to our team's success.
Marcus Andrew was new to our team this year, opens the batting, and an expert at avoiding half centuries or more. He is great at smashing the ball hard and far away, but also have a safe pair of hands in the slips.
Keith Ferret is back! Behind the stumps, setting game tactics and pushing a single or two, he is stronger than ever. Keith brings great understanding of the game, running a team and tiger-like agility into the team.
Prasuk Jain has only been with us for several weeks but has quickly shown to be an important member of our team. He bats, bowls and fields, and we can always count on him contributing in one way or another.
Zamaan Khan is coming through from our younger teams and adds a critical and often missing skill to our: spin at a consistent line and length. He has proven himself that he can really change or control a game when he needs to. If not by ball, then definitely by bat.
Debrup Dasgupta has also come through from our younger teams and is a tiger in the field and class with the bat. He is someone to look out for over the next couple of seasons!
Up until our second to last game we were still in the running for promotion. Our last two games were to be played against Hengelo 1, who at that point was leading the league. First one of the two was away at a ground with high grass and a pitch with variable bounce. Last minute call-offs due to sick babysitters and babies being born we ended up with 10 people on the field. We failed to adjust our playing style and ended up losing badly, losing all chances of promotion.
The following week we played them again at home and were hoping for revenge and finish our season strong. Batting first we set a comfortable total of 196 in 40 overs with great batting performances from everyone in the team. Nobody expected we would take that revenge by bowling them all out for 37. Mark Gray summarized this game well by saying it was a great display from our team showing what could have been for the entire season and what will hopefully be for the next one.
Despite all of the great achievements and games, there is still room for improvement. Again, continuity and commitment to the team and a full season will be our main focus for 2019. I believe that in 2018 we have built the foundation for a team capable of promoting back into the Overgangsklasse and with some hard work the Eerste Klasse, while also supporting our younger players to grow and get ready for VRA 1.

Uit de oude doos
Soms vind je zo maar een kleinood dat je fantasie ongebreideld aan het werk zate. Zo verging het mij toen ik nog niet zo lang geleden bij een antiquariaat een klein kartonnen boekje aantrof met als opschrift ‘Programma van den toer van het Nederlandsch elftal naar den tentoonstellingswedstrijden te Brussel 22-27 juni 1910’. Het bleek een uitgave van de ‘Nederlandsche Cricket Bond’ en zag er zeer verzorgd uit. De tour moge dan maar vijf dagen hebben beslagen, de Wereldtentoonstelling in kwestie (Exposition Universelle et Internationale) duurde maar liefst van 23 april tot 1 november. Het Nederlands elftal dat daar aantrad kende de volgende samenstelling: J.C. Schröder (aanvoerder), C.J. Posthuma, Jhr. Mr. C Feith, J.H. Hisgen, P. de Groot, H. van Booven, P. Aernout, C. van Loon, W. van Waveren. W. Gerke en W. Eigeman.’ Hun leider was de journalist C.J. Groothoff, van wiens hand vele jaren later het voetbalboek Van de groene velden zou verschijnen dat ik nog steeds bijna uit mijn hoofd ken.
Op woensdag 22 juni 1910 ging het per trein naar Brussel, een reis die getuige een bijgeleverde tabel ruim vijf uur in beslag nam, vooral doordat er overal gestopt werd. Een dag later werd begonnen aan een tweedaagse tegen de MCC. Speeltijden 11.30 tot 6. Er werd geluncht op het tentoonstellingsterrein en wel van 1.30 tot 2.30. men nam er dus ruim de tijd voor in die dagen. Na de MCC speelden de Hollanders nog tegen België en Frankrijk, waarbij de laatste wedstrijd niet gemakkelijk zal zijn geweest, niet zozeer door de zware tegenstand alswel door het verteren van het copieuze diner van de avond ervoor.
Op maandag 27 juni ging het weer huiswaarts. Om 7.53 stapte het gezelschap in op het tegenover hun hotel ‘Royal Nord’ gelegen Gare du Nord en om 13.38 verliet de laatste speler in Hilversum de trein, ongetwijfeld vervuld van indrukken want ‘de deelnemers aan den toer, benevens de het elftal vergezellende officials, hebben gedurende de week van 20-27 Juni vrijen toegang tot de tentoonstelling.
