Na een emotionele vrijdagse ALV waarin Peter van Gulik en Floris Kappelle hun meer dan verdiende erelidmaatschap mochten ontvangen was het zaterdag aan ons eerste team om ACC te gaan verpletteren. De schande van de week ervoor, toen een dikke nederlaag werd geleden tegen Punjab, diende immers uitgewist te worden. Om een uur of half twee naderde ik in mijn auto het veld en zag vanuit een ooghoek dat VRA fieldde. Tot zover niets opvallends. ACC zou zo’n 150 runs hebben gemaakt en de onzen zouden met een dergelijk totaal geen moeite hebben. Ik liep het pad naar het veld op en ontwaarde voor me de kleine gestalte van Tom van Nierop die vol ongeloof voor zich uit staarde. ‘Het gaat vreselijk slecht,’ mompelde hij, ’95 all out.’ Pas toen begon de harde werkelijkheid tot me door te dringen. Alle VRA-ers hadden hun batting beurt al gehad en samen nog geen honderd runs op het bord gebracht. Een diepe droefheid daalde in me neder. Dit werd een nederlaag, de tweede op rij. Na het drama een klein uur aanschouwd te hebben, reed ik naar huis, waar ik via TK-cricket vernam dat het toch nog spannend was geworden, mede door toedoen van onze sterbowler Ashir Abid, die voorbestemd lijkt voor het Nederland elftal. Maar goed spannend of niet, verloren werd er.

Hoe anders ging het zondag.

Ditmaal was Salland de tegenstander, een team dat het verrassend goed doet. Gelukkig voor de VRA-aanhang tapte ons eerste nu uit een heel ander vaatje. Johan Smal (78) en Vikram (112) lieten geen twijfel bestaan over hun bedoelingen en zorgden voor een mooi totaal (284 voor 6). Ingeklemd tussen John Wories en Steven Lubbers die elkaar de finesses van het spel nog een grondig uitlegden, zag ik het met ingetogen vreugde aan. Zo kende ik onze jongens weer. Salland kwam er daarna niet aan te pas (164 all out), waarna op het terras bitterballen en rosé bijzonder goed smaakten en de conversatie steeg tot grote hoogten.

Twee nieuwe Ereleden benoemd

In de Algemene Ledenvergadering van afgelopen vrijdag zijn Floris Kappelle en Peter van Gulik tot erelid benoemd.

In een uitgebreide laudatio bezong voorzitster Dorien de verdiensten van zowel Floris als Peter. Zodra we beschikken over de teksten daarvan, zullen we die hier publiceren.

VRA 1 vs Salland

After a loss against ACC the day before, we were determined to improve our batting performance against Salland on Sunday. We got that chance when opposing skipper and ex-VRA’er Victor Lubbers put us in to bat on what seemed a good pitch for batting. Unfortunately, we lost Shirase Rasool on the first ball of game: edged to the keeper off a good delivery. After that Johan Smal and Vikram Singh put on a fantastic 152-run partnership for the second wicket, showing their skill in a combination of big hitting and single-milking off the spinners. Johan fell for 78 runs off 90 balls. Teja Nidamanuru came to the crease and continued to run the Salland team ragged in the field. He impressed with a run-a-ball 37. Vikram at the other end soon brought up his fourth (!) Topklasse century. After Vikram got his century, both got out trying to up the run rate in search of our 300+ total. Contributions at the end by Jack Balbirnie (25* off 19), Tyler van Luin (10 off 11), Sachin Peiris (9 off 12) and Leon Turmaine (7 off 7) got us to a sizeable total of 284 runs. Salland got off to a decent start (24-0 off 5) until Johan Smal produced an amazing one handed pick up direct hit from square leg to get rid of the Salland opening batsman, which was quickly followed by a catch off the fast bowling of Eddie Visser (1-38 off 8) to leave the opposition at 43-2. Leon Turmaine (3-24 off 10) took 3 wickets through the middle period as Salland struggled to score with any freedom. Two more run outs resulted, with two more fantastic one-handed pick up throws from Teja and Jack (good drills Taku...). Teja (2-2 off 0.5) and Jack (1-17 off 5) picked up the remaining wickets as Salland were bowled out for 164. Thanks for the support and we will hopefully see you again on Thursday at Sparta as we go head to head to the current topklasse leaders.

Punjab 2 vs VRA 2

A young gun – Pavan came in and together with Ashwin stitched together a calculated partnership worth 78 runs. It was tale of two sessions between the drinks, the first where they settled in with minimal risks and kept the scoring rate up with ones & twos, and the second, post drinks where they showcased their repertoire of shots usually witnessed only in the nets featuring cuts, fierce pulls, a switch hits, stokes almost going all the way over cover. The pair seemed unstoppable as VRA went past 200 in the 42nd over, however a brain fade moment resulted in Pavan running himself out at 37 looking for a non existent third run thus breaking the partnership at 211-5. Ashwin in a show of solidarity got out the very next ball two shy of what would have been a well-made fifty.
A fresh new pair at the crease would have Punjab lead to believe that the worst was over and they could stymie the runs. Explain that to VRA’s latest canon bat – Madan Rajagopal (Maddy). Maddy is the hardest to bowl at the nets cause you never know how far he’s hit the ball because a) he pulverizes it and b) he pulverizes it again making you rethink your life choices. At 211-6 with 6 overs to go Maddy crushed whatever choices the opposition skipper took of managing the final score. He blitzed 33(14) in an IPL’esque finish with A. Ashraff who relatively slouched himself to 35*(26) to take VRA to a mammoth 287/7; TLDR: that’s too many off too few in too little a time

The boys indulged in some biryani before Punjab’s riposte who started their chase in gear seven. They slogged both the quicks whatever lengths were bowled and with short boundaries even a mis hit went the distance. Sharad created an opportunity in his third over with a skier at mid on, who decided to dance all around the ball and let it blast through his hands and slam on his cheek like an instant slap. However, the skipper rang in the changes and what should be standard procedure introduced himself to break the stand. A Ashraff , was at his miserly best and quickly tacked a couple of wickets to go with his biryani reducing Punjab to 77-4 off 13 overs which also featured a very smart stumping from Ashwin. Pavan and KD picked up a couple of wickets each in between to keep Punjab at 119/6. Punjab then threatened with a 50 run partnership, however Pragam brought Aadit for his second spell who charged into pick 2 wickets off 2 balls and kill the chase. Punjab eventually folded for 175 giving VRA victory by 112 runs.

VRA ladies lost this weekends T20! 

Everybody in the team is too busy this week to write a matchreport.   

So in short:  It was a beautiful day, we had a great 1st innings and a lovely 3rd innings.  We played the R&W women. Fielded first. Gwen 2/18/4, Nathalie 3/14/4, Feline 1/19/3, Kanishka 1/26/4, Miranda 1/24/4  Beautiful catches were taken by Manisha, Feline and Nathalie. Total 110/8/20   

The second innings was less spectaculair, we didn’t have a huge total to chase, but couldn’t stay in or get it off the bat. But we had a lovely day with the team, spectators and a great 3rd innings watching the games on the first field. And some homework to work on upcoming week!

Highlight: Feline’s first bowled wicket, first catch and first runs, this is why she became the woman of the Match!! Well deserved :)

VRA 4 vs De Kikkers

The first morning of the new cricket season typically brings excitement for the changing season and a new dawn for the VRA 4’s lies ahead, from the sounds of it, last season didn’t work out as well as hoped. However, Prasuk’s brigade are aiming for the championship this time around.

With the sun shining gloriously down on the VRA 1s pitch at De Bos, VRA won the toss and elected to bat. The opening stand bought about an excellent partnership, the first 15 over sailed by, 117 - 0, but the old saying 1 wicket brings 2, left Kikkers feeling they were still in this match, first Khan fell to a very low keeping ball for a beautifully played 57 and swiftly followed by Nabeel for 50. Kikkers fielders not shy of an appeal, felt they were back in the match, they were right, Pasierowskiand and Liyanage followed quickly aswell, leaving VRA 153-4, however Martjin Besier had other ideas, a swift, destructive, 40 off 26 balls, quickly eased the nerves for any VRA supporters on the boundaries edge, and took the VRA to total over 220. Pain and Lees, managed to finalise the proceeding with a final score of 248 off 40 overs.

During the lunch break the heavens opened, much to Kikker’s delight, leaving a long rain delay but with some incredible groundsman skills from the VRA team. It left Kikkers needing 176 off 22 overs. Game on, a fast start by their openers, A Hasan and S Mehta got them to 60 without loss, but again the old saying, 1 bring 2 (in this case 3), is never more true, 3 wickets in one incredibly eventful over from Mr Martjin Besier, left Kikkers scratching their heads. A valiant effort from the Kikkers batting line up, with Lees and Khan taking the final wickets left them falling 36 runs short of the required total.

An excellent start to what Prasuk and the VRA 4 army hope to be a season to remember.

Qui Vive 7 vs VRA 6

Our first game for the season, not the result we desired but we did find our own HP33!!!

The weather was just perfect for our season opener against Qui Vive 7 at Qui Vive Cricket Club in Amsterdam and the team was very motivated and enthusiastic about the first game.

We won the toss and opted to bat first. The plan always was to bat first and put up a score on the board. We had a good balanced team for the game and the openers had a very cautious but slow start with 24/0 at the end of 7 overs, however we lost our openers in quick succession. Ujjawal Ranjan played a very good knock at no. 3 but rest of the middle order failed to support him. We were reduced to 109/8 at the end of 27 overs and then came one of the best innings (56* of 51 balls) by Srijan Singh (our own HP33) supported by Aditya Krishnakumar which took us to decent and defendable total of 177/9 in 40 overs.

The second innings started just as we planned, very disciplined start by our bowlers Danish Waheed & Srijan Singh which led to a break through in the 2nd over itself. We managed to restrict Qui Vive 7 to under 3 runs an over till drinks and managed to take 2 more wickets in quick succession, so the score was 51/3 in 14overs.

The stage was set for us to make in-roads through their middle and lower order however a very bad decision by the umpire (clear caught behind not given) gave away extra opportunity to one of the batsman who eventually scored 37runs that led the foundation for Qui Vive 7's win.

For the rest, Qui Vive 7 did play better cricket than us as we dropped quite a few catches which costed us the match. The lads were disappointed but are determined and motivated to practice and perform as champions.

The team would like to think that they started the season, and will end the season, like Mumbai Indians in IPL - they start with a loss and end up being the champions in IPL.

VRA ZAMI 1 vs Groen Geel

This match report starts with a different match. Another first team. With VRA 1 getting out relatively cheaply, and ACC seemingly cruising towards victory, ZAMI cricket once again became a hotbed of innovation. With the desire to play on the first field, the boffins set to work organising a fair set of innings. The result? A four innings, two grounded, 35 over per side one-dayer. First, 10 overs each on the third ground, then lunch, then 25 overs each on the main ground. With all that agreed upon it was time to start.

Once the goose nuggets had been removed from the pitch Groen Geel went in to bat. Opening the bowling for VRA was Andrew Pulver. A maiden, good start. Chris Harvey taking some time to find his line from the other end, but a relatively safe spell nonetheless. Himanshu replaced Andrew in the 7th over, this spell led to the first lost ball flying into one of the Pinoké goals. At the first innings break after 10 overs, Groen Geel had managed to put up a strong total of 60-0. A strong challenge for VRA.

With 8 off the first over it seemed like Hashan and Willem van Mierlo were setting VRA up for a good first half chase. However, the partnership fell at 26 and 7 runs later VRA lost another one. With rate and wickets falling, VRA reached the innings break with a score of 39-2.

Arriving back at the clubhouse for lunch it became clear that ACC were not so much cruising as stumbling across the finish, a low scoring wicket then. Sign of things to come? Groen Geel continued their innings on the first ground. With pressure building from both ends, the partnership was broken bij Pulver, Groen Geel batsman edging it to keeper Bart Schotte, who passed the catch on to 1st slip Collignon. While Ewoud de Man was building pressure from the city end, Willem van Mierlo came in from the other end to produce a sensational spell taking 6 for 16 including two maidens. The other two scalps came from Collignon and Himanshu, eventually bowling Groen Geel out for a total of 134.

For this author it was a flying visit to the crease, removing himself from the chase almost as quickly as he entered it. VRA nonetheless soldiered on with Himanshu and Ewoud at the crease, keeping the runs ticking over. When Himanshu got out Ewoud was joined by Bart Schotte, and while the scoreboard kept ticking over, so did the overs. With the required rate creeping up Bart holed out to the fielder, and Ewoud was joined at the crease by honourable member Floris Kapelle. In a valiant attempt to get the rate up, Kapelle unfortunately ran himself out. On came Collignon. At the end of the 33rd over VRA was on 119-6, needing 16 off the last two overs. As the other ZAMI matches had finished some time earlier, the support from the clubhouse was becoming more and more vocal. 9 runs fell in the 34th over, leaving 7 required off the last over. In true ZAMI fashion it came down to the last ball. By this point the scores were tied, and Chris Harvey elegantly put his thigh pad to the ball and swapped ends with De Man, sealing victory for VRA.

With niceties exchanged, the teams went up for an undisclosed beverage. They were greeted by a surprise speech from VRA keeper Bart Schotte, who informed all present of Floris Kapelle’s ascendence to honourable member. The length of this friendship was shown through a picture of Bart as a baby, in the arms of a five year old Floris. One can only imagine what the recreation looked like. All in all, a perfect day of ZAMI cricket.

VRA ZAMI 2 - Groen Geel Zaterdag 6 mei

De eerste wedstrijd van het seizoen, de eerste wedstrijd van 2023 voor Zami 2. Na maandenlange intensieve training in de geweldige VRA indoorhal was het moment eindelijk gekomen. Iedereen was zo enthousiast dat het voor de meeste van het team tot 5 minuten voor de wedstrijd duurde voordat ze de weg naar het veld hadden gevonden.
Veld drie was het toneel, het gras stond nog hoog voor het voetbal van het week ervoor. Door de heftige regen van de laatste tijd was de pitch nog niet wat we gewend zijn, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. We konden weer cricketen!

Toss gewonnen, eerst batten. Daar hadden we zin in. Harold, die in jaren niet zoveel heeft getraind als afgelopen winter was gebrand om Groen Geel even te laten zien wat hij van plan was de eerste bal, beetje down leg gegooid probeerde hij gelijk uit het veld te rammen. Helaas raakte Harold de bal net niet goed genoeg. Wat een glorieuze vier had moeten zijn werd een lullig loopje naar fine leg die voor de razendsnelle snelle openingsbowler van Groen Geel erg uitdagend op 45 graden was gezet. Eerste bel van de wedstrijd, eerste bal van het seizoen, gelijk het eerste wicket. Geen goed begin dus.

Maar Amit kwam in, ook veel getraind afgelopen winter. Misschien wel overtraind, want na een paar ballen stond hij ook langs de kant, LBW. Het ging allemaal te snel, Anil was nog niet klaar en gebaarde naar de captain dat deze maar voor hem in moest gaan anders waren we met een timed out het volgende wicket ook kwijt geweest. Aan captain Thomas de taak om het schip terug op koers te krijgen. En samen met Prasuk lukte dat aardig. Prasuk, vorig jaar het gehele jaar geblesseerd en nu nog steeds wekelijks naar de fysiotherapeut, liet met een steady bat zien dat hij aan de beterende hand is. Het bleek achteraf een matchwinning stand van 151 runs te zijn.

Prasuk had er 61 runs en Thomas eindigde met 92 runs met een runout in de laatste over. De rest van de batsman konden helaas hun stempel niet op de innings drukken.
Zami 2 eindigde de 35 overs met een degelijke 198 voor 9.

Groen Geel had blijkbaar meer moeite met de pitch op het derde veld en kwam lastig aan scoren toe. Openers Vishal en Frederik hadden hun zaken goed op orde en met groede fieldingacties van mensen als Cameron en Amit hielden ze de oppositie in de tang. Frederik hield de runrate laag, vishal pakte de wickets. Vishal eindigde met drie wickets, waarna Anil (2 wickets), Cameron(2 wickets) en Joost (1 wicket) de wedstrijd binnen 25 overs in het slot kunnen gooien. Groen Geel eindigde met 108 runs waardoor Zami 2 de wedstrijd won met een verschil van 90 runs.

Goed begin van het seizoen. Hopelijk zullen er nog vele mooie wedstrijden volgen!

Punjab 1 vs VRA 1

On the back of a disappointing display in the previous game, VRA had a key away fixture against Punjab on possibly the best day for cricket thus far. VRA won the toss and opted to bat first with Vijay and Pragam steadying VRA to a run-a-ball partnership. The wicket was sluggish with the ball not coming onto the bat and Punjab switched to slow spin options, making acceleration difficult for the batters. This led to an immediate wicket with Vijay losing his wicket to a slow return catch for 17 and VRA at 27/1 off 6 overs. The next 13 overs yielded 67 runs with the batters trying to force the issue on a pitch which was getting better as the sun shone. Pragam held the scoring rate up and with some forceful boundaries, aided with some missed chances they took the score to 85 before Debrup departed for 18 and Zaman a for 8 with VRA at 94-3 off 19. This united the vice-captain A. Oppu with the skipper to balance the loss of quick wickets whilst maintaining the steady flow of runs. The Captain of the team

Tussen alle specialisten in een cricketteam, tussen de piefelaars, de staldeuren, de stilisten, openingsbowlers, hard slaande dan wel kwispelende staartbatsmen, de mannen achter de palen en de onmisbare social secretaries is er altijd maar één captain. Wat hij moet kunnen, moet weten, moet doen dan wel laten kan met één activiteit worden aangeduid: leiding geven. Een plezierige bijkomstigheid is het winnen van de toss. Dat kun je niet leren, daar valt niet voor te trainen, het is een soort Russisch roulette met een muntstuk in plaats van een pistool en een statistisch hogere pechfactor.

Sommige aanvoerders hebben een ‘lucky hand’. Peter Borren was volgens mij zo iemand. Heeft Rod Lyall al wel eens onderzoek gedaan naar de toss winnende TK-captains en de resultaten van hun teams vanaf 2010? Een totaal onbekend aspect aan het fenomeen captain is hoe hij of zij eruit zou moeten zien. Ongeveer 100 tot 125 jaar geleden hadden sommige fotografen en producenten van ansichtkaarten daarvan wel een bepaald beeld.

Op deze ansicht, die op 13 oktober 1912 om half acht ’s avonds van Crawley naar Gosport in Hampshire werd verstuurd, zien we een zeer jeugdige captain, afgebeeld volgens vigerende esthetische opvattingen en idealen van rond 1900. Daar zit een naar preraffaelitische en Arts en Craft- normen gemodelleerd jongetje in een met roze rozen omkranst medaillon snoezig te wezen. Of hij er blij mee geweest is , valt uit zijn engelachtige blik niet op te maken. En zou hij geweten hebben, dat onder zijn smetteloze presentatie, inclusief prachtbat en een cricketbal met kerstbalambities, een ronkend distichon pronkte?
